The Commercial Press And The Modern Novels In The Literary Field Change: A Study Of The Ten-Volume "Novel Series", Juan Wen Mar 2018

The Commercial Press And The Modern Novels In The Literary Field Change: A Study Of The Ten-Volume "Novel Series", Juan Wen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The "Novel Series" was one of the well-known brands of the Commercial Press. It was published between 1903-1908 and consisted of a hundred novels. It had three characteristics: diversified origins of the novels that were collected from Japan, Europe and America, a wide variety of types, and the inclusion of both classical Chinese and vernacular works. The Commercial Press was a major and influential market-oriented private press. Its selection of the titles in the Series was defined by the times, and subject to the cultural thought of the society and the needs of the post Novel Revolution readers, reflecting the …

The Discourse System Of The Qing Loyalists: A Case Study Of "Zhenyuan Courtiers", Jingru Pan Mar 2018

The Discourse System Of The Qing Loyalists: A Case Study Of "Zhenyuan Courtiers", Jingru Pan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The Qing loyalists' self-writing was consigned in their poetry texts, in which we could reevaluate the adherent phenomenon through close reading. The Qing-loyalists had a discourse system, which reflected their position and even ideology. However, as individuals, their self-expression did not obey the rules of the discourse system, which means that we should reinvestigate the adherent phenomenon and their literary works. "Zhenyuan courtiers", which was often alluded by the Qing loyalists, is a good example for the reinvestigation. As a classical allusion, on the one hand, it implied loyalty. On the other hand, it expressed their reminiscent moods as well …

The Priori Grounds For Kant's Judgment Of Taste, Youfeng Hu Mar 2018

The Priori Grounds For Kant's Judgment Of Taste, Youfeng Hu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In The Critique of Judgment, the essential problem to be resolved is that Kant should search for the priori grounds for appreciation and judgment so that they can be contained in the priori philosophy system. It is not a smooth course for Kant to make it. First of all, the fundamental problem that why appreciation and judgment are priori needs to be answered, after which Kant can search priori principles for teleology. Secondly, through the priori deduction of appreciation and judgment, Kant discovers their universal necessity. Kant looks for the priori grounds in the human mind for them, and what …

The Sense Of Beauty As Sensus Communis: The Issue Of Sense Of Beauty In Aesthetic Experiences, Xuguang Liu Mar 2018

The Sense Of Beauty As Sensus Communis: The Issue Of Sense Of Beauty In Aesthetic Experiences, Xuguang Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

As a kind of universal capacity for the communication of the state of mind, sensus communis is the premise of aesthetic judgment, a feeling of the free play of the powers of representation, and proportion of cognitive powers. When we use the concept of sensus communis, we intend to deal with the objective necessity of the confluence of the feeling of everyone with that of each. It is the constitutive principle for aesthetic pleasure, and the regulative principle for experience. Kant does not think that sensus communis is a kind of sense, but a kind of idea. However, Marxists believe …

The Tension Of Expression And Ways To Balancing, Yue Jiang Mar 2018

The Tension Of Expression And Ways To Balancing, Yue Jiang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The "crisis of expression" in the humanities and social sciences is caused by the imbalance of expression tension. The phenomenon of expression tension is very common; it is not only found in the same text and different texts of the same object, but also in the process of understanding, expression and re-understanding the same text. The text tends to be successful when the various expression tensions are balanced. When one of the tensions is too strong to keep balance, it either leads to the failure of the expression, or produces texts of aggressive expression. The purpose of analyzing the expression …

Words As Signatures: Agamben And The End Of Poetry, Jiang Lan Mar 2018

Words As Signatures: Agamben And The End Of Poetry, Jiang Lan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In Agamben's works, there is a tension between the mysterious fire and the narrative language. The language, which derives from the doxologies in Christology, seals the mystery between the Heaven and the Earth. Rilke's Duino Elegies and H9 lderlin's poetry could be regarded as the production of these signatures. However, if we intend to break the signature, we cannot destroy the words and verses in poetry, as Mallarmé does in Coup de dès, because as soon as we destroy the signature, the mystery behind it will be dispersed. Therefore, Agamben argues that we can transform the fossilized political and linguistic …

Good Catholic, Bad Catholic: Emil Antonucci, Vito Acconci, And The Incarnational Conscious, Ciaran Freeman

Helene Lafrance Library Undergraduate Research Award

The redefinition of what can be considered religious art in a contemporary society is at the forefront of conversation in the art world. In May 2018, the Met Costume Institute opened its Summer Blockbuster exhibition “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Although current, this conversation is not new. Like all art, religious art has always been and always will be in a state of constant evolution. So what is the Catholic imagination? How has it made itself manifest in visual art? In “Postmodern Heretics” art historian Eleanor Heartney argues that the Catholic Imagination is uniquely informed by what she …

A Pedagogical Approach To The Waltzes And Tangos For Piano By Francisca Gonzaga, Ana Paula Machado Simoes Mar 2018

A Pedagogical Approach To The Waltzes And Tangos For Piano By Francisca Gonzaga, Ana Paula Machado Simoes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Francisca (Chiquinha) Gonzaga (1847–1935) was an important composer in the development of Brazilian music. She was also a remarkable female personality and broke paradigms in a society dominated by men. In spite of that, her works are not widely performed and studied yet. The goal of this dissertation is to provide a pedagogical approach to her works. This research explores her waltzes and tangos for piano, analyzes their musical, reading and technical difficulties, and provides a graded level for half of them to stimulate their use as repertoire for piano students and performers.

Chiquinha composed 37 waltzes and 30 tangos …

Turning “Bad Jews Into Worse Christians”: Hermann Adler And The London Society For Promoting Christianity Amongst The Jews, Robert Ellison Mar 2018

Turning “Bad Jews Into Worse Christians”: Hermann Adler And The London Society For Promoting Christianity Amongst The Jews, Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

This paper explores how sermons contributed to Jewish-Christian relations in Victorian England. I begin with a rhetorical analysis of sermons preached on behalf of the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews, the largest and best known missionary organization of its kind. I then examine a collection of sermons in which Hermann Adler, then rabbi of London’s Bayswater Synagogue and later Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, pushes back against their efforts, offering the “true explanations” of passages which, in his view, had been improperly employed by Christian preachers. Finally, I trace a kind of “feedback loop” in which …

Improving Intercultural Skills: Developing Communicative Flexibility And Tolerance Of Ambiguity In The Writing Center, Vicki Kennell Mar 2018

Improving Intercultural Skills: Developing Communicative Flexibility And Tolerance Of Ambiguity In The Writing Center, Vicki Kennell

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Presentations

This presentation shares early results of an IRB-approved, cross-institutional study of the developing intercultural skills of writing center tutors and provides guidance on thinking about the implications of such data for a tutor training context. Intercultural communication involves skills such as communication flexibility, tolerance of ambiguity, and empathy. Initial data showed that many tutors need to develop these skills, that tutoring experience alone is likely insufficient for improvement, and that experience may actually decrease communication flexibility by solidifying tutors into a particular role rather than expanding their ability to flexibly apply strategies.

Alien Lands, Carissa Mosley Mar 2018

Alien Lands, Carissa Mosley

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Alien Lands has been an academic year-long study and cross-media art endeavor, researching the history of palm trees in Los Angeles and documenting their current presence. I photographed and made videos of the palm trees in Los Angeles and ended the project with a ceremonial installation/performance, grieving the colonial history and unsustainability of palm trees by ironically commemorating them. This body of work is meant to provoke discussion of palm trees' iconicization, their ubiquitous invisibility in our environment, their colonial history, and their likely nonexistent future.

Romola: The Failure Of A Husband And Triumph Of A Wife, Ryan Harding Mar 2018

Romola: The Failure Of A Husband And Triumph Of A Wife, Ryan Harding

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

George Eliot’s fifteenth century romance Romola follows the coming of age and independence of the titular character, an Italian noblewoman during the Renaissance. This essay examines the development of the relationship between Romola and her husband Tito’s common law wife, Tessa, specifically through the impact of Tito’s personal failures on both women. Throughout the novel, Romola struggles with her failed marriage, her need for personal connection, and Tito’s poor treatment of Tessa. Using the knowledge gained from her experiences and Tito’s poor behavior as an example, Romola transforms herself into the proper husband figure for Tessa: a provider, protector, and …

The Sonic Sacrament: An Emerging Sacramental Theology Of Music In Contemporary Evangelical Churches, Joshua Altrock Mar 2018

The Sonic Sacrament: An Emerging Sacramental Theology Of Music In Contemporary Evangelical Churches, Joshua Altrock

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

This essay contends that in contemporary liturgies, a sonic sacrament of Eucharist is emerging through the medium of contemporary worship music. After laying out a theology of worship, sacrament, and participation, the article examines three major churches in Los Angeles: Hillsong LA, Mosaic LA, and Reality LA, and analyzes their liturgical practice. Based on this analysis, the author contends that American churches are exchanging the traditional sacrament of Eucharist with Contemporary Worship Music. The remainder of the article considers the implications of this shift.
