Marriage As A Covenant: Towards An In Culturated Pastoral Approach On Marriage And Family In Mozambique Today, Virgílio Arimateia Domingos
Marriage As A Covenant: Towards An In Culturated Pastoral Approach On Marriage And Family In Mozambique Today, Virgílio Arimateia Domingos
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
It is striking that "Mozambican societies considered marriage to be one of the most important stages in an individual's life." 1 Amoris Laetitia reminds us that "the desire to marry and form a family remains vibrant, especially among young people."2 Yet, the percentage of marriage in the Church is declining as showed in Chapter One. The Bishops of Africa and Madagascar admitted that the multilayered challenges "destabilize the life of couples and families" because of inadequate pastoral approaches. 3 On the other hand, Amoris Laetitia recognizes, "In some countries, especially in various parts of Africa, secularism has not weakened …
Moving Up The Ladder, Sami Issa
Moving Up The Ladder, Sami Issa
The Diana McDonald Writer's Challenge
Due to civil war in Syria, Sami Issa decided to extend his visit to his sister in the U.S. With the U.S. being his temporary home, Sami decided to do his best to improve his English and his general academic skills. With entertaining details, Sami’s personal narrative describes his fears and confusions in his English-speaking workplace. He also describes the strategies he employed to overcome the fears and to improve his speaking and comprehension skills. (Seth Mendelowitz)
Mastering Languages, Kennedy Coffie
Mastering Languages, Kennedy Coffie
The Diana McDonald Writer's Challenge
Kennedy Coffie’s “Mastering Languages” is a personal essay that nicely demonstrates how our way of speaking can tie us to a community and sense of communal identity, while shutting us off from other communities and identities. Kennedy’s mother taught her children and insisted upon “proper English,” while her father was content to speak the dialect of his southern community and, once Kennedy’s mom passed away, to let his daughters speak the language of their urban Chicago community. Kennedy offers insightful reflections on her journeys between different English language communities. (Seth Mendelowitz)

A Whole Lot Of Blame To Go Around: The Confederate Collapse At Five Forks, Peter S. Carmichael
A Whole Lot Of Blame To Go Around: The Confederate Collapse At Five Forks, Peter S. Carmichael
History Faculty Publications
While Confederate major general George E. Pickett was finishing his plate of fried fish at a shad bake, Union major general Philip H. Sheridan was devouring Pickett's command at Five Forks. The sounds of the Federal assault were supposedly silenced by abnormal atmospheric conditions called an acoustic shadow. Pickett and his luncheon companions -- Maj. Gen. Thomas Rosser and Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee -- heard nothing over the sounds of conviviality, but the sudden appearance of the courier alerted the dining party to an alarming reality. This solider claimed that he was nearly shot out of his saddle by Federal …
The Vandal, Thomas Harris '18
The Vandal, Thomas Harris '18
Distinguished Student Work - Visual Arts
Underlining over ten allegories and many extended metaphors, “The Vandal,” Harris’ first self-published book, is a poetry epic about the ambiguous and emotional deposits of his own “Mary Sue,” who delves straight into one of the most versatile and unconventional exhibitions of melodrama and manipulation in the modern literary catalogue.
Harris does not hold back, making dramatic remarks as well as ensuring an alter-ego at hand through the abstract photography of his face that fills most pages. His repertoire also includes his other concept art and works from fellow artists around the world.
On the very surface, Harris writes about …
After Vatican Ii: Renegotiating The Roles Of Women, Sexual Ethics, And Homosexuality In The Roman Catholic Church, Kenneth Brian Nauert Jr.
After Vatican Ii: Renegotiating The Roles Of Women, Sexual Ethics, And Homosexuality In The Roman Catholic Church, Kenneth Brian Nauert Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Vatican II was one of the most seminal councils in Roman Catholic Church history, having far reaching effects on the universal institution.1 One of the most important outcomes of Vatican II was not the reforming of orthopraxy, but the dialogue that developed regarding three specific issues – the transforming of women’s roles in Church life, Catholic sexual ethics, and the Church’s relationship with LGBTQ+ individuals.2 The decades following Vatican II became a new era of religious dialogue among Catholic scholars and theologians, which established new discussions on women’s ordination, sexual ethics, and attitudes towards homosexuality in the contemporary …
Temporal Context-Specificity In Predictive Learning Produced With Visual, But Not Musical, Primes, Catherine Woosley Luna
Temporal Context-Specificity In Predictive Learning Produced With Visual, But Not Musical, Primes, Catherine Woosley Luna
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this study we investigated whether a musical prime would produce a contextspecificity effect in predictive learning. Participants were divided into six conditions of a spy-radio predictive learning task. The six conditions were comprised of a combination of three primes (i.e. visual, music, or both) and two learning phase groups (i.e. retrieve, default). The primes indicated the type of stimulus used to prime the temporal context for the test cue-outcome association. The learning phase groups indicated which temporal context would be primed. In the retrieve group, learning Phase 1 was primed; in the default group learning Phase 2 was primed. …

City Of Roses: Sexual Exploitation In Portland, Oregon, Olivia Meyer
City Of Roses: Sexual Exploitation In Portland, Oregon, Olivia Meyer
CUP Undergraduate Research
In 2009, the U.S. Department of Justice funded a report on child trafficking that revealed that Portland, Oregon is one of the national hubs for child sex trafficking. The goals of this thesis are to investigate the web of characteristics of larger Portland metropolitan area that have contributed to the high prevalence of sexual exploitation of women and children. This research is aimed to close the gap in our understanding of the extent and nature of Portland’s local sex trafficking trade. An exploration of Portland’s location and culture, especially its placement on the I-5 corridor, libertine sex culture, and the …
The Rise Of Mass Incarceration And The Private Prison Industry: 1970s-Present, Timothy Munoz
The Rise Of Mass Incarceration And The Private Prison Industry: 1970s-Present, Timothy Munoz
CUP Undergraduate Research
Over the past thirty years the prison population in the United States has rapidly increased to the point that the U.S. now has the largest prison population in the world. How did this happen? Through research, this thesis will argue that mass incarceration is a direct result of the war on drugs and tough on crime policies dating back to the 1970’s. These policies largely targeted the urban poor and minorities. With a rapid increase in the prison population during 1980’s, state governments began to look to the private sector for a more cost-effective alternative. Private prison companies started with …
