On Being Trans: Narrative, Identity, Performance, And Community, Chloe Jo Brown Apr 2018

On Being Trans: Narrative, Identity, Performance, And Community, Chloe Jo Brown

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis focuses on various topics related to transgender identity and culture. Through a combination of ethnographic and secondary research, I studied transgender coming out narratives, trans media representation, transgender performance and identity, and conceptualizations of group and chosen family in a community of trans students, the WKU Transgender and Non-Binary Student Group.

The three chapters of my thesis address some of the traditional milestones of a trans person’s acculturation: coming out, constructing one’s newly discovered trans identity, and finding community. Chapter 1 explores coming out as transgender, and the way in in which coming out is valued and discussed …

The Weight Of A Term: "Substantial Evidence" And Buried Data, Stewart Justman Apr 2018

The Weight Of A Term: "Substantial Evidence" And Buried Data, Stewart Justman

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

When Congress amended the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1962 to ensure the efficacy of drugs before they reach the market, it imposed a standard of evidence distinctly weaker than the reasonable one of preponderance. The difference is material. Some drugs now on the market may or may not have a preponderance of trial evidence of efficacy. An obstacle to a finding of efficacy is the well-known nemesis of drug makers with a definite interest in favorable trials: the placebo effect. Trials where the placebo effect runs high are vulnerable to negative findings, and trials with such findings all …

In The Beginning... A Legacy Of Computing At Marshall University, Jack L. Dickinson, Arnold R. Miller Ed.E Apr 2018

In The Beginning... A Legacy Of Computing At Marshall University, Jack L. Dickinson, Arnold R. Miller Ed.E

Manuscripts

This book provides a brief history of the early computing technology at Marshall University, Huntington, W.Va., in the forty years: 1959-1999. This was before the move to Intel and Windows based servers. After installation of an IBM Accounting Machine in 1959, which arguably does not fit the modern definition of a computer, the first true computer arrived in 1963 and was installed in a room below the Registrar’s office. For the next twenty years several departments ordered their own midrange standalone systems to fit their individual departmental requirements. These represented different platforms from different vendors, and were not connected to …

Marzo Muestra Un Asombroso Incremento Del 142% En La Actividad De Twitter, Juan Luis Suárez, Yadira Lizama Mué

CulturePlex Lab DataPoints

March Sees An Astounding 142% Increase In Activity, Juan Luis Suárez, Yadira Lizama Mué

CulturePlex Lab DataPoints

The presidential campaign has begun with new impetus following the March 11th elections to Congress, the Easter holidays and the lack of merger between Fajardo and De La Calle. Extraordinary interest in the candidates’ debates echoes what can be detected on Twitter: the volume of campaign tweets has gone up from 1,870,709 (with 198,825 users) to 4,519,579 (334,861 users) - a growth of 142%- between February to March. All candidates’ followers have continued to grow steadily since February, with Petro way ahead of all others. Of course, this data needs to put in relation with the number of votes that …

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: A Case Study Of Hamilton: An American Musical To Understand The Effect Of Engaging The Past In The Culture Of Today, Adrianna C. Halsey Apr 2018

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: A Case Study Of Hamilton: An American Musical To Understand The Effect Of Engaging The Past In The Culture Of Today, Adrianna C. Halsey

Selected Honors Theses

This thesis is a look into how Alexander Hamilton has been portrayed on stage in the musical Hamilton: An American Musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The goal of this research is to show that this musical is not history, but rather a commentary on current culture through one of America’s favorite stories (that of the Revolution.) In this show, past figures have been used to discuss the issues of modern America, and that is now being sold as history. This has been discovered through the analysis of primary and secondary sources of the time period, as well as through a …

Ethical Finance As A Systemic Challenge: Risk, Culture, And Structure, Saule T. Omarova Apr 2018

Ethical Finance As A Systemic Challenge: Risk, Culture, And Structure, Saule T. Omarova

Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy

This Article analyzes the principal themes in the newly reinvigorated public debate on the role of ethical norms and cultural factors in financial markets and identifies its key conceptual and normative limitations. It argues that the principal flaw in that debate is that it tends to ignore the critical role of systemic, structural factors in shaping individual firms' internal cultural norms and attitudes toward legitimate business conduct. Reversing the causality assumption underlying the current academic and policy discourse on institutional culture, the Article discusses how broader reform measures seeking to alter the fundamental structure and dynamics of the financial market-on …

In Between, Wansoo Kim Apr 2018

In Between, Wansoo Kim

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

In my eyes, the world is composed of both revealed things and hidden things. I interpret my surroundings based on this idea, seeking to realize my ignorance and awareness. With this in mind, I create objects in which dichotomous ideas are present, and use their physically revealed and hidden aspects in order to represent the greater human struggle to see and understand what is hidden from us.

The notion of inside and outside is one of my particular subjects. Upon observing an object or a structure, we see only its external reality. I aim to present the unobservable, often presenting …

The Adjacent, Phoebe Jan-Mcmahon Apr 2018

The Adjacent, Phoebe Jan-Mcmahon

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

There are few times when my mind quiets; painting is one of them. A universe exists adjacent to this one where I process thoughts in a quiet space, free from the streaming cacophony of various devices. This adjacent space is where my mind is able to process the state of the world. I think it is essential that everyone knows what is going on around them, especially if the issues they hear about do not affect their daily life. I want to be an active participant in the world but find myself bogged down by the unrelenting events cycling through …
