Healing Through Bibliotherapy, Kristina N. Spinelli
Healing Through Bibliotherapy, Kristina N. Spinelli
Senior Honors Projects
Emotions that adolescents face while experiencing their parents’ divorce can be traumatic. They often feel as though they have no one else to turn to, and feel alone. There are different types of therapy that can help individuals cope with their emotions and bibliotherapy can be used as a self-coping technique.
Bibliotherapy is a method used to cope with certain feelings from different experiences. It is a reading program that includes a variety of literature to offer emotional therapy. It is effective by aiding the individual who is struggling with his or her feelings to identify with a particular character, …
Creative Nonnatives: Painting Invasive Insects Of The United States, Monica Tynan
Creative Nonnatives: Painting Invasive Insects Of The United States, Monica Tynan
Senior Honors Projects
An invasive species is a nonnative organism that may cause damage to an ecosystem. Invasive species cause problems in an environment by outcompeting native organisms for resources or by feeding upon native species. Invasive insects in particular can harm an ecosystem by consuming foliage and decreasing biodiversity. During my experience at the Preisser Lab at the University of Rhode Island, I witnessed rsthand the damage that invasive insects can do to a tree population, and I learned about how ecosystem dynamics can be disrupted by the introduction of a nonnative species.
My project portrays an aesthetically pleasing visualization of several …

Honors Project Abstract
In my years as a theatre student and practitioner, I have learned that the most creative people aren’t necessarily found center stage. For every actor taking a bow, there are numerous support staff who created the production that will bring actors acclaim. Without an audience, the work of these artists will remain unseen and unappreciated. Therefore, those who promote the performances are certainly an integral part of the theatrical process. Often referred to as “show business”, the ticket sales and revenue are essential to the health and well being of any theatrical organization. URI Theatre, like any …
The Biomechanics Of Music Performance, Rachel F. Bellisle, Jessika Decker
The Biomechanics Of Music Performance, Rachel F. Bellisle, Jessika Decker
Senior Honors Projects
When first learning to play a wind instrument, beginner musicians are taught how to hold their instrument and correctly position their body. They are taught how to sit, where to put their hands and fingers on the keys, and how to hold their arms. This initial lesson on posture and hand positioning is often short, as one quickly moves on to learn the embouchure and breathing techniques that allow sound to be produced. As a musician progresses in skill, positioning is emphasized more, and they learn that it can affect their risk of strain or injury and improve their sound …

From Playwriting To Production, Lauren Wade

Theater has been a beloved art form for centuries, originating in Ancient Greek times and evolving into what we know today. For as long as I can remember I have been involved in theater, performing in my own school plays starting in elementary school and, upon entering high school, assisting the middle school next door in their productions. While I have been studying acting here at the University of Rhode Island, I have also had the opportunity to expand my knowledge in many aspects of stagecraft including stage management, costume and set design, set construction and scenic painting, and more …
Smuggling On Lopez Farm, Jonah Delasanta
Smuggling On Lopez Farm, Jonah Delasanta
Senior Honors Projects
In the years leading up to the American Revolution, the issue of illegal trade exacerbated tensions between the American colonies and the British government. Many Rhode Islanders, including wealthy merchants, smuggled goods like Madeira wine or French West Indian sugar into the colony in contravention of British trade laws. British warships patrolled Narragansett Bay in an attempt to interdict illegal trade, but many of the ships they intercepted were trading legally. Colonial resentment of British enforcement was exacerbated each time an innocent merchant captain suffered humiliation and financial loss at the hands of a British naval officer. While smuggling appears …
An Examination Of Hegemonic Structures : Deconstructing The Myth Of Education As An Equalizer, Daniela Conte

“I will no longer be made to feel ashamed about existing. I will have my voice... 1 will overcome the tradition of silence.” — Gloria E. Anzaldua. Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza
Gloria Anzaldua’s Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza describes the acculturation process as violent and cruel, effectively muting the voices of minority groups to keep them and their experiences marginalized. This description sparks many questions about the experience of minority groups in higher education, especially concerning language: are marginalized cultures able to keep their ethnic identities present in higher education composition? Furthermore, should there be space for cultural identity …
"Oh! Why Does He Not Look At Me? Why Cannot I Speak To Him?" : Indirectness In Three Novels By Jane Austen, Claire A. Davanzo
"Oh! Why Does He Not Look At Me? Why Cannot I Speak To Him?" : Indirectness In Three Novels By Jane Austen, Claire A. Davanzo
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
In this thesis, I focus on several encounters from Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Persuasion. Each encounter is characterized by patterns of specific behaviors on the part of each text’s heroine. I examine these patterns of behavior and argue that they function as filters for allowing the heroines to resist directness. The filters are particularly valuable because, as sociologist Erving Goffman shows, directness amplifies threats of social and emotional vulnerabilities.
In Chapter I, “Evasions of Emotion in Sense and Sensibility,” I argue that Elinor’s encounters are typified by patterns of behavior designed to avoid, suppress, and …
The Epigram Of The Great Entablature Of St. Polyeuktos And The Legacy Of Anicia Juliana, Ann Patrice Schnakenberg
The Epigram Of The Great Entablature Of St. Polyeuktos And The Legacy Of Anicia Juliana, Ann Patrice Schnakenberg
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This work examines the epigram of the Early Byzantine church of St. Polyeuktos, and the lineage of its patron, Anicia Juliana, in order to gain insight into the structure’s layout, decoration, and departure from architectural norms.
By utilizing the epigram as a guide, it examines the design and decoration of the church. Topics covered include aspects of the structure such as its design connections to the Temple of Jerusalem, the vine and peacock iconography of its great entablature, the presence or absence of a domed roof, and a baptismal mosaic of Constantine. It also touches upon related commissions that lay …
An Assessment Of Théologie Totale, Vincent P. Williams
An Assessment Of Théologie Totale, Vincent P. Williams
Yale Divinity School Theses
This thesis critically assesses Sarah Coakley’s proposed “théologie totale,” especially as articulated in God, Sexuality, and the Self and her 2015 Warfield Lectures. It advances four aims: (1) to analyze how Coakley’s privileging of contemplative prayer and her broad interdisciplinarity work together; (2) to situate and contextualize her claims by placing them in dialogue with Friedrich Schleiermacher’s theological method, noting convergences in experience-based starting points; (3) to evaluate contemplation as a methodological locus using Jean-Yves Lacoste’s phenomenology of prayer and Miranda Fricker’s account of epistemic injustice; and (4) to reflect on the implications of Coakley’s method for future systematic work. …

Women’S Liberation, Family, And The Fight For Daycare At The University At Albany, Sheri Sarnoff
History Honors Program
On October 9 1970, the Albany Student Press, the University at Albany’s student newspaper, featured an article entitled, “Day Care A Basic Issue,” which discussed the Pierce Hall Day Care Center. The students using the center claimed that the University’s Administration contradicted their original support for the on-campus daycare center. The students exclaimed, “issue after issue has been fabricated (Space, money etc) to stall the progress on the Center.”1 The article also featured a quote from a spokeswoman from the Women’s Liberation Front arguing that, “the Administration has continually enjoyed putting forth the facade of working with women, when …

Authority's Last Stand: Mainline Protestants, Catholics, And Albany’S Tumultuous Sixties, Calley Quinn

In 1970, a mainline Protestant in the Capital Area Council of Churches officially reached his breaking point. “Students in vast numbers have risen in rebellion against conventional American society,” Reverend Frank Snow stated to fellow Council members, “…. The crisis, as we all know from observation, if not from personal experience, is real.”1 Serving as head campus minister for the State University of New York at Albany, Snow could not handle counseling one more student concerned with the Vietnam War and conscription laws. He made it very clear in the Annual Report of the Capital Area Council of Churches …

When a 260-year-old regime comes toppling down, how do you organize society after the fall? That is the challenge that faced members of the Meiji state after the end of the Tokugawa Bakufu. The need for internal unity and the pressure of Western Imperialism, as imposed by the Unequal Treaties,[1] raised the stakes of the Meiji State’s goal: to create a modern nation-state with a unifying national identity. What did that process entail? First, create a legal precedent for control and monopolize violence. Second, define the individual because a nation needs a public, and a public cannot exist without …
Monstrous Souls Imprisoned In Monstrous Flesh: James Baldwin's Discourse Of God, Power, And Love From Go Tell It On The Mountain To The Amen Corner, Naomi Mcpeters
English
In the middle decades of the twentieth century, James Baldwin offered a critique of a corrupt church framework in a way that differed from other black writers and social activists of his time, particularly in how he deals with racial attitudes within the black church and white Christianity’s tendency to scapegoat black Americans. Baldwin’s first novel, Go Tell It On The Mountain, and his last work to deal with the church, The Amen Corner, show figures of power within the black church who have abused their positions and betrayed those under their authority. He exposes the failure of religious power …
How Documentary Poetry Imagines, Seunghyun Shin
How Documentary Poetry Imagines, Seunghyun Shin
English
As we face the end of the post-modern world at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the preceding decades of postmodernity can be seen to have led to a widespread underappreciation of reading and writing poetry in general. If we want to say that poetry is necessary in the world, how should literary scholars and writers defend its value? The value of reading and writing poetry owes to its socio-political efficacy. This research will highlight how poetry can be political through exploring the works of three documentary poets: Muriel Rukeyser, C.D. Wright, and Claudia Rankine. The goal is to refute …

Adam Smith, Settler Colonialism, And Cosmopolitan Overstretch, Onur Ulas Ince
Adam Smith, Settler Colonialism, And Cosmopolitan Overstretch, Onur Ulas Ince
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Adam Smith has recently been celebrated as a precocious theorist of commercialcosmopolitanism who decried the injustice of imperial conquest and extraction. This paperfocuses on Smith’s endorsement of settler colonialism in North America and argues thatSmith’s newfound cosmopolitanism is overstretched. Smith welcomed settler colonies as theembodiment of the “natural progress of opulence” and spared them from his invective againstother imperial practices like chattel slavery and trade monopolies. Smith’s embrace of settlercolonies, however, involved him in an ideological conundrum insofar as the prosperity ofoverseas settlements rested on imperial expansion and seizure of land from Native Americans.I contend that Smith muffled this disturbing …

ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies
The paper discusses how Edmund McMillen created “The Binding of Isaac”. It goes into his inspirations, influences, and his background leading up to the game. It then describes the game, going into its mechanics, design, art and story and how each of these elements were unique and risky to put into an Indie game. I discussed how “The Binding of Isaac” brought in fresh, new elements that most mainstream games wouldn’t dare touch, and despite that “Binding of Isaac” accomplished amazing success. Then, I talk about how the game was initially made by a group of two people, and was …

Racial Roots Of Romanticism: American And European Africanism Are The Creation Of Bio-Politics, James Flynn
Racial Roots Of Romanticism: American And European Africanism Are The Creation Of Bio-Politics, James Flynn
Honors College Theses
The British Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the American Edgar Allan Poe shared a number of similarities in their writing styles. Both men came onto the scene early in their respective nation’s forays into Romanticism. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was of the first generation of British literary Romantics, while Poe introduced his Gothic influences before the Renaissance of American Romanticism in the 1850s. In the work of both men there is an emphasis on color as it pertains to race, especially aspects of whiteness. This focus on race has been covered at length by authors such as Toni Morrison in her book …

The Intellectual, Ethical, And, Spiritual Dimensions Of The Islamic Thought, Ambreen Sohani
Honors Theses
The intellectual inquiry and acquisition of knowledge have always been integral to Islam, right from the first revelation recorded by the Qur’an. This paper aims to examine how the origin, role, and purpose of intellect have been understood in Islamic thought from its inception and through its subsequent evolution. It further aims to discuss the role and purpose that intellect and ethics ought to serve in the faith and lives of contemporary Muslims. Muslim philosophers based their ideas on teachings of the Qur’an and teachings of Prophet Muhammad. They utilized their intellect to share this significant knowledge with their contemporary …

Finding A New Home In Harlem: Alice Childress And The Committee For The Negro In The Arts, Judith E. Smith
American Studies Faculty Publication Series
Alice Childress’s performing career in the 1940s was primarily associated with the American Negro Theater, a collectively run professional theater company with a mission to nurture black talent and create compelling theater for Harlem audiences; as Childress would later comment, “We thought we were Harlem’s theater.” ANT made use of all available resources to accomplish this mission; producing plays written by black and white playwrights, hiring white teachers, and accepting white actors and technicians committed to its goals.

The Trinity...The Biblical Mandates For Preaching, Teaching, Worshipping And Evangelism In The Local Church, Pedreto Graham-Brown
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Trinity is viewed as the bedrock of the Christian faith. Notwithstanding, the worship of the Trinity in local churches today are hardly mentioned by pastors in their sermon. The researcher chose this topic to introduce the importance of assimilating the worship of the Trinity in the areas of the four key biblical mandates. The researcher surveyed 50 Southern Baptist Pastors and 10 members were selected from each church to participate. It was discovered that both pastors and members lack the essential understanding of incorporating the worship of the Trinity in these four areas of the ministry. The results of …

A Study On The Use Of Church Building Space On Sundays And Weekdays: The Case Of Yongin Jeil Church, Byeong Im
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The objective of this study is to propose alternatives for better utilizing church space. It aims to help the church space serve multiple purposes during weekdays in addition to Sundays, and meet the needs of both the local community and the next generation. In many places in South Korea, the church buildings are too big to deliver the pastoral philosophy and the spirit of the times. Consequently, the South Korean public oppose building large churches. Furthermore, the church buildings are typically used only during the weekends, an inefficient use of space for their size. In order to improve such use, …
