An Idol Of The Old Errors, Amy Kaye Lafferty
An Idol Of The Old Errors, Amy Kaye Lafferty
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This work is a collection of short stories exploring the religious, social, psychological, and relational consequences of territory and isolation. Though not necessarily within the same world, they are set in modern times and exemplify similar commentaries on religious structures in rural, Midwestern America.
Ship Of Fools, Kevin Grzybowski
Ship Of Fools, Kevin Grzybowski
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
In this collection of stories, the absurd deterritorializes characters, plots, and ideologies throughout a combination of full-length narratives and flash fiction. In the process of reterritorialization, new meaning is added to archetypical narratives (The Bible's creation myth) and to familiar characters (the impoverished man, the cruel industrialist). Through these narratives, humanity is explored through unconventional means as characters find themselves at odds with supernatural forces, whether it be reincarnation, interaction with deities, or being haunted by the grotesque rat king. While this is a far cry from realism, the absurdism allows the reader unusual ways of seeing the same world.
Breaking Expectations: Deviations From Genre, Gender, And Social Order In The Clerk's And The Merchant's Tales, Rachel Lea Combs
Breaking Expectations: Deviations From Genre, Gender, And Social Order In The Clerk's And The Merchant's Tales, Rachel Lea Combs
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Breaking Expectations: Deviations from Genre, Gender, and Social Order in the Clerk's and Merchant's Tales seeks to reconcile deviations in traditional form and representations of marital authority in both tales by understanding Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales as existing in and responding to a shifting social hierarchy. After establishing that the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 and John Wyclif's heretical tracts signified drastic challenges to received systems of social, political, and religious authority, I assert that the disruption of genre and medieval models of wifehood in the Clerk's Tale and the Merchant's Tale is a recognition-celebratory for the Clerk and bitter for …
Self-Confessions, Brandy Dawn Clark
Self-Confessions, Brandy Dawn Clark
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The poems in this collection pay homage to the narrative tradition of poetry, in that they tell a story, use a narrator and characters. These poems, however, are the author’s own interpretation of the narrative tradition. The poems are not formal, are not written in metered verse, and do not rhyme. The poems in this collection are a celebration of narrative poetry, and of her poetic voice. They are a mixture of free verse and prose poems, and above all—they collectively tell a story: her story.
Merging Mediums: Applying Document Design To Online Help Systems To Increase Usability, Meghan M. Smith
Merging Mediums: Applying Document Design To Online Help Systems To Increase Usability, Meghan M. Smith
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Document design is an essential part of print, and more recently, web documents, but recent application to the usability of document design in the current iteration of online help systems has been lacking. As an attempt to fill this gap, I conducted a study testing three document design principles—color, navigation structures (headings/hyperlinks), and visuals—to determine how they should be applied in online help systems to increase usability. I constructed an online help system for the online infographic creator Piktochart, and used these three principles according to theories and practices from prior research on print and web documents. Participants used the …
The Trials Of Louis Benecke, David Alan Whitby
The Trials Of Louis Benecke, David Alan Whitby
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history, and the country felt its impact in many ways. One of those ways was in the expansion of the pension system. The scale of the war left thousands of wounded soldiers in need of care, and a government that recognized its duty to help. In this thesis, I examine the new pension laws that not only benefitted veterans, but also their dependents. Women and children were included within the laws of the ever changing and expanding pension system. This system was not just for white veterans, but also for African-American …
Higher Education: The Impact On Bosnian Women Who Came As Refugees To The United States, Belma Sadikovic
Higher Education: The Impact On Bosnian Women Who Came As Refugees To The United States, Belma Sadikovic
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the impact college education has on Bosnian refugee women who resettled to the United States. The research findings help us better understand the effect higher education has on female students who came to the United States as refugees, their self-sufficiency and their overall integration into their new society. Using Kunz’s refugee theory and Bourdieu’s theory on social and cultural capital as a theoretical framework, the study explores socio-cultural factors that enable and constrain the ability of Bosnian women to navigate the facets of higher education, and how those factors affect their self-sufficiency and overall integration. The participants …
We’Re All Mad Here : The Madness Of Linguistic Expression In Alice’S Adventures In Wonderland, Rose Arszulowicz
We’Re All Mad Here : The Madness Of Linguistic Expression In Alice’S Adventures In Wonderland, Rose Arszulowicz
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The occurrences of madness in the text of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures on Wonderland and in Sir John Tenniel’s accompanying illustrations have largely gone unexamined or have been seen by interpreters as simple byproducts of Carroll’s use of nonsense language. This paper examines the ways in which madness is produced and framed in both the context of the narrative as well as in Tenniel’s associated illustrations. A close reading and examination of the language of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland reveals a framework through which the narrative’s underlying elements of madness can be perceived. Through their use of language, the narrator …
Choosing A Moral Compass: The Journey Towards Moral Maturity In Harry Potter, Tricia Mieden
Choosing A Moral Compass: The Journey Towards Moral Maturity In Harry Potter, Tricia Mieden
Masters Theses
This thesis examines Harry Potter’s moral development and illustrates how a reader’s involvement with literature complements moral education in the classroom. Using Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development as a guide, this thesis considers how Harry solidifies his moral commitments as he matures and, as a result, becomes more aware of how his moral principles influence his actions. Through an analysis of Harry’s cognitive reasoning, which is evidenced through the narration, readers are able to develop a similar awareness to the ways their moral principles influence their choices
Worship Renewal Through Discipleship: How Discipleship And Mission Affects Our Worship, Kevin Haglund
Worship Renewal Through Discipleship: How Discipleship And Mission Affects Our Worship, Kevin Haglund
Masters Theses
Numerous articles, blogs, and books have been written in recent years about the lessening of congregational participation in singing and many have called for a renewal of worship and changes in worship practice within the church. Yet, most of the solutions offered are aimed at bettering what happens inside the worship event—singing songs with more theologically rich lyrics, incorporating more scripture and prayer, striving for more creative ways to engage the congregation, more resources and training for worship leaders, and many other valuable ideas. As excellent as those solutions may be, they are incomplete unless we also focus on that …
Islam In Saudi Arabia: The Homogeneous Portrayal And Heterogeneous Reality, John Rogeberg
Islam In Saudi Arabia: The Homogeneous Portrayal And Heterogeneous Reality, John Rogeberg
Masters Theses
The objective of this thesis is to apply commonly held statistics in the world of missiology regarding folk Islamic practices to the least likely country for such practices to be found, Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is believed by most to be the birth-site of an austere, strict, orthodox form of Islam, responsible for the nature and nurture (education, promotion, and financing) of Islamic extremism. Conversely, I posit that through tracing the development of Wahhabism and its current global influence on Islam, its literalist interpretation becomes a profitable tool for the student of anthropology, missiology, and cross-cultural studies to gain a …
Enhancing The Spiritual Well-Being Of Alzheimer's Patients Utilizing Music, Sheri Heeb
Enhancing The Spiritual Well-Being Of Alzheimer's Patients Utilizing Music, Sheri Heeb
Masters Theses
Over 40 million people have some form of dementia. Alzheimer’s Disease “is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.” The non-pharmaceutical approaches in this study do not have the side-effects of many of the therapies currently being used for treating Alzheimer’s Disease. As part of this project, I will reference multiple research studies which include spirituality and Alzheimer’s Disease, the Nun Study of the Sisters of Notre Dame, and music therapy and Alzheimer’s Disease. Results show that music therapy boosts the memory, reduces anxiety and behavioral issues, and restores a sense of self-awareness. Other studies show that …

Reaching Transcendental Meditation Followers For Jesus: Christian Meditation And Cultural Contextualization, Ashley Boyles
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to build on to research pertaining to Christian meditation, the Transcendental Meditation movement, and theological contextualization for possible evangelism strategy to reach adherents of TM. The first chapter begins with the purpose of the thesis as well as its limitations and research methods to be involved, with a layout of the rest of the thesis. In the second chapter, the literature review examines material from several different perspectives: Christianity, TM, the TM turned Christian, and the nonreligious field of science. The third chapter includes historical background on Transcendental Meditation, its interaction with Western culture, …
Keep Moving Forward: A Postcolonial Interpretation Of Narration In Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible", Katherine Pagan
Keep Moving Forward: A Postcolonial Interpretation Of Narration In Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible", Katherine Pagan
Masters Theses
Barbara Kingsolver’s novel "The Poisonwood Bible" follows the fictional Price family as they embark as missionaries to the Belgian Congo in 1959. With the intent to evangelize to the native people in a remote tribe, the family is shocked at the resistance to their outside culture. Narrated by the four daughters (and occasionally their mother), "The Poisonwood Bible" gives a unique look into the shifting perspectives of the Price women. Thrust into a foreign culture, they quickly learn that in order to survive, they must adapt to the native society. Utilizing Gerard Genette’s theories on narration and perspective as a …
The Polyphonic Survivor: Dialogism And Heteroglossia In Art Spiegelman's "Maus: A Survivor's Tale", Joshua Novalis
The Polyphonic Survivor: Dialogism And Heteroglossia In Art Spiegelman's "Maus: A Survivor's Tale", Joshua Novalis
Masters Theses
Using Mikhail Bakhtin's theories of polyphony, dialogism, and heteroglossia, this thesis will seek to show that Art Spiegelman's Maus is an innately heteroglossic work. Through the use of the graphic novel medium, a multi-perspectival blend of visual and textual narrative, Spiegelman creates a work where various key voices are allowed to speak within the work—without any one voice being given full authority over the other. Vladek Spiegelman, for example, is given the ability to speak freely, despite his narrative’s shortcomings. Although Spiegelman shows Vladek’s perspective to be flawed and inaccurate at times, Art’s interviews with Vladek provide a perspective into …
Salar Music And Identity: A "Sad" Sound, Elizabeth Keating
Salar Music And Identity: A "Sad" Sound, Elizabeth Keating
Masters Theses
The Salar are a Muslim minority group in China. They are from the northwest province of Qinghai. Xunhua, the Salar autonomous county, is located about 150 kilometers away from Qinghai’s capital, Xining. I have elected to learn about this minority group because of the need for research and general value. There is a need because little prior research has been done concerning the Salar minority within the field of ethnomusicology. This hole needs to be filled within minority China research. Beyond ethnomusicology, cultural and sociological understanding will profit, expanding the knowledge base of humankind. Also, the Salar themselves are interested …
Introduction To Piano Pedagogy: A Bible-Based Course For Piano Teacher Training In Christian Colleges And Universities, Alissa Passburg
Introduction To Piano Pedagogy: A Bible-Based Course For Piano Teacher Training In Christian Colleges And Universities, Alissa Passburg
Masters Theses
Piano pedagogy, like teacher education in any discipline, is built on the conviction that an individual can be trained to be a successful piano teacher. However, determining what specific aspects to include in the piano pedagogy classroom to foster a pre-service piano teacher’s growth and development is a point of much discussion. Oftentimes piano teacher training focuses on developing the characteristics considered essential to the role of a successful piano teacher. For Christian pre-service piano teachers and piano pedagogy professors in Christian colleges and universities, these characteristics provide a meaningful way for Biblical truth and piano pedagogy coursework to intersect. …
Batman As Monomyth: Joseph Campbell, Robert Jewett, John Shelton Lawrence, Frank Miller, Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, And The Hero’S Journey To Gotham, Andrew Thigpen
Masters Theses
In 1988, Jeffrey Lang and Patrick Trimble wrote an article called, “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow,” which explains the absence of a hero of the American monomyth in comic books. The American monomyth was proposed by Robert Jewett and John Shelton Lawrence and describes a community in harmonious paradise threatened by evil. The normal institutions of law and order fail to defeat the evil, but fortunately, a hero from outside the community arises to resist temptation, defeat the evil, and return the community to its peaceful condition. Lang and Trimble observe the death of Superman during the events …
A Five-Week Bible Study For Sorority Women, Haley Mcclelland
A Five-Week Bible Study For Sorority Women, Haley Mcclelland
Senior Theses
My goal with this study is to help sorority women break free of this pressure and stereotypical role they may feel inclined to fill, and to make them stronger women and leaders in the community. Studies have proven that religion is linked with lower drug and alcohol use, lower rates of suicide or suicide ideation, lower levels of depression and hopelessness, and a positive correlation with physical health (Smith, 2003). By creating a means through which to introduce God or expand on knowledge of God, this study has the potential to impact the overall quality of life for its participants. …
The Immersion Process: Cross-Cultural Language Learning, Rachel Lunsford
The Immersion Process: Cross-Cultural Language Learning, Rachel Lunsford
Senior Theses
This study seeks to analyze the effects of motivation, awareness, and the immersion process through study abroad on foreign language production. Three participants were analyzed, two of which studied abroad and one who did not (my control case). Two of the three participants lacked the variable of awareness, measured as perception and reflection on language learning development, while only one participant (Participant M) who studied abroad in both Costa Rica and Spain, was made aware of her own learning process via a language learner’s journal and monthly recorded conversations. By studying abroad in two Spanish-speaking countries, Participant M selfreported the …
The American Political Mindset: The Relationship Of Exceptionalism And Cynicism In Public Opinion, Anya Kaiser 3068310
The American Political Mindset: The Relationship Of Exceptionalism And Cynicism In Public Opinion, Anya Kaiser 3068310
Honors Projects
This research investigates the pervasiveness of both political cynicism and American exceptionalism within American society. Throughout history, there has been an interaction between the public's feelings of American exceptionalism and cynicism in the United States, starting at the nation’s founding and continuing into recent times (Chaloupka, 1999). As an inter-disciplinary and mixed-methods study, this research utilizes both a nationally representative quantitative data-set and a qualitative analysis of Allen Ginsberg’s (1959) poem “America,” a cultural representation of the relationship between American exceptionalism and cynicism. Using the American National Election Studies’ 2012 survey on trust in government (N = 5,914), I examine …
Sexual Assault Prevention On College Campuses, Using Community Based Participatory Research Strategies To Craft A Creative Response, Adrianne Beer
Sexual Assault Prevention On College Campuses, Using Community Based Participatory Research Strategies To Craft A Creative Response, Adrianne Beer
Honors Projects
Sexual assault prevention and education programs have been working to develop successful ways to decrease sexual assault for almost to decades. Research has shown that despite efforts there has yet to be a program that effects statistics regarding campus sexual assault. This essay addresses several issues that explain why prevention programs have fallen short. It includes the study of victim blaming, the college party narrative, stranger rape, and bystander intervention. Examples from first hand reports of sexual assault and the study of BGSU prevention programs are used. The essay also addresses how our culture plays a role in sexual assault, …
Old World Readings Of A New World Novel: European Perspectives On John Updike's Terrorist, Laurence Mazzeno, Sue Norton
Old World Readings Of A New World Novel: European Perspectives On John Updike's Terrorist, Laurence Mazzeno, Sue Norton
Articles
Given the diverse and polarized reaction by reviewers and scholars in the decade immediately following its publication, John Updike’s 2006 novel, Terrorist, is likely to become a textbook case for reception studies. In reception studies, differences in space (in Updike’s case, globally) and time play an important role in shaping a reader’s reaction to a text.1 Within months of its publication, Terrorist generated hundreds of reviews in dozens of countries around the globe; scholarly articles began appearing less than a year later. Most notable is not simply the sheer number of publications devoted wholly or in part to this novel, …
Rekindling The Role Of Affectivity In Ignatian Discernment Of Spirits In The Context Of Christian Life Communities In Darjeeling, India, S. John Kennedy
Rekindling The Role Of Affectivity In Ignatian Discernment Of Spirits In The Context Of Christian Life Communities In Darjeeling, India, S. John Kennedy
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
This thesis addresses and offers solutions to the issue of lack of affectivity in decision making among the Christian Life Community members in Darjeeling. The problem has been traced from their former religious practices of immediately appeasing spirits by offerings material things through village priests when the spirits interfere in their life. This practice has come down to instant decision making without out paying close attention to the consequences, as they would cease all activity to appease the spirits. To examine and resolve this issue, this thesis first presents the relationship between affectivity and discernment. Second, the thesis presents an …
The Evolution Of Solo Violin Performers In Film Music History, Caitlan Truelove
The Evolution Of Solo Violin Performers In Film Music History, Caitlan Truelove
Theses - ALL
Solo musicians have been present in film music since the beginning of film history. The extent of the musicians’ involvement has typically varied, from being featured soloists during film changes in a theatre to being featured soloists in a film soundtrack. Sometimes musicians were the subject matter of films, but not all of these films cast musicians in the on-screen role; instead directors selected an actor to portray the musician and had a competent musician train them to look like they could play an instrument on-screen. In many cases, directors asked musicians to record the actual piece in a studio …
Image And Perception Of The Top Five American Tourist Cities As Represented By Snow Globes, Caitlin Malloy
Image And Perception Of The Top Five American Tourist Cities As Represented By Snow Globes, Caitlin Malloy
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis investigates the connection between popular culture’s perception of place and the physical augmentation of reality. Focusing on the top five tourist cities in America, this disparateness is observed through the lens of a souvenir: the snow globe.
The presentation of the work is broken into two parts: the written portion and the book of diagrams. A total of 45 snow globes (9 for each of the 5 cities) were selected for the study, each carefully analyzed for content to include monuments, colors, text, dimensions, realism, and layout. This resulted in a series of diagrams which graphically express the …
Restoring The Gothic: The Fate Of Medieval Cathedrals In A Divided Germany, 1945 - Present, Haley Walton
Restoring The Gothic: The Fate Of Medieval Cathedrals In A Divided Germany, 1945 - Present, Haley Walton
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
At the end of World War II, Germany faced some of the greatest levels of destruction of any country in Europe, leaving their historic cities and iconic architecture in ruin. Across the country, some monuments were restored with the upmost attention to detail, while others were maintained in a state of rubble for decades. Following the 1949 division of the state into West Germany (a democratic republic) and East Germany (a socialist autocracy), most of the rebuilding took place against the backdrop of strong ideological differences. But the two new nations shared a centuries-long history, and, after rehabilitating basic infrastructure …
