Life Is Not A Pro/Con Proposition: A Review Of Kassi Underwood’S “May Cause Love”, Melanie Springer Mock May 2017

Life Is Not A Pro/Con Proposition: A Review Of Kassi Underwood’S “May Cause Love”, Melanie Springer Mock

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "In many ways, contemporary abortion debates have managed to do just that: objectifying women who have abortions by politicizing their experiences. May Cause Love compellingly reveals that life doesn’t always follow ideology, as Adichie says, and that sometimes, when faced with a monumental decision, women need support, guidance, and a safe community who will listen closely, rather than judge harshly. Because every woman’s story about abortion has the power to change the world, if only we have the ears, and the heart, to listen."

Constructed Reality: A Study In Spatial Perception Through Virtual Reality, Jose P. Rodriguez May 2017

Constructed Reality: A Study In Spatial Perception Through Virtual Reality, Jose P. Rodriguez

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Architecture often begins explorations that lead into various modes of end products. These modes of production and representation could often embed traces that shape the outcome of the design. In his book, “Architectural Representation and The Perspective Hinge.”, Alberto Perez Gomez says that “Architects do not produce Buildings but instead produce images of buildings.” These representational images are an expression of an idea or design. Historically, representation began in static two-dimensions. By bridging into digital environments, these representations become more dynamic. As computing power increases and software broadens, the use of virtual reality environments and immersion simulations are becoming more …

On Craft, William Lentjes May 2017

On Craft, William Lentjes

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Craft is a relationship - a dialogue - between craftsman, tool, and material. Craft begins with the intent of all of these loci, and all of these loci are rooted in Being.

Being is known through the consciousness, awareness, and perception of a subject. Being is the inherent existence and totality of "what is."

Being crafts us; Craft imbues Being.

This thesis re-examines the pedagogical approach of an architectural education. The focus is placed on craft through presuppositionless phenomenology.

In an age of endless mechanized production and spiritless materialism, the practice of craft can teach us to return to the …

Grounded Aspirations: The Freedmen's Struggle For Independence From The Planter Land Monopoly, Kristopher L. Hiser May 2017

Grounded Aspirations: The Freedmen's Struggle For Independence From The Planter Land Monopoly, Kristopher L. Hiser

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Following emancipation, the freedmen began to seek out the highest expression of American conceptions of freedom: their own land. Because of the relationship between land and freedom, they focused their efforts on acquiring homesteads and farms that they could cultivate on their own terms. Southern landowners, however, quickly recognized that in order to recreate their antebellum social and economic positions, they would need a class of dependent laborers to maintain the plantation system which had been so immensely profitable for them before the war. In order to protect their own economic interests, they began to subvert the efforts of the …

"A Vigorous Propaganda": The Peace Conferences Of 1899 And 1907, The Peace Palace, And Internationalism Through Design At The Hague, 1899–1920, Daniel Pecoraro May 2017

"A Vigorous Propaganda": The Peace Conferences Of 1899 And 1907, The Peace Palace, And Internationalism Through Design At The Hague, 1899–1920, Daniel Pecoraro

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uncovers the history of the Peace Palace and The Hague’s role in the early days of the internationalist movement. In the process of localizing the early twentieth century history of The Hague, this thesis examines the development of international imagery and culture through design. The Peace Palace as we know it today was ultimately a result of tensions between internationalist ideas (cooperation, arbitration, modernity) and the pride of Old World nationalism. The final design by Louis Cordonnier and J. A. G. Van der Steur repudiates the feeling of modernity surrounding the idea of peace through arbitration. It is …

Racial Stereotypes: History And Consequences, Paul Olsen May 2017

Racial Stereotypes: History And Consequences, Paul Olsen

Celebration of Learning

Several years ago I asked an Augustana student whom I knew very well to describe his college experience. He was an excellent student, a respected athlete elected captain of the track team, a 3-time All-American and conference champion in track, and he was also a starter on the winning basketball team. He is also African American. His answer: “it was often uncomfortable.” This from a student who experienced LOTS of success!

My words today are partially motivated by his response. They are also driven by the increased racial unrest that has characterized our country the last few years and by …

Basic Knowledge Training For Vfx Production Assistants And Coordinators, Sharon Anne Roberts

Instructional Design Capstones Collection

Visual Effects (VFX) is a part of the film-making process that takes place during the broader phase of film-making known as post-production. There are two broad groups of individuals who are responsible for the outcome of the VFX project - artists and production. The groups work in conjunction to achieve the team goals. At present, there is no formalized training available for production individuals and much of the required learning is done on the job. This projects explores a basic training course for individuals looking to increase their basic knowledge of VFX production. Grounded in industry research conducted by the …

Between The Rural And Suburban: The Social, Political, And Economic Dynamics Of Policing Forsyth County, Ga, Alexandra Vuich May 2017

Between The Rural And Suburban: The Social, Political, And Economic Dynamics Of Policing Forsyth County, Ga, Alexandra Vuich

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

This thesis reveals how perceptions of crime produce real outcomes in how Forsyth County is policed by the local sheriff’s office and how the residents come to police themselves and each other. Using historical analysis and ethnographic methods, this thesis explores the county’s racial history and shifts in political economy that shape perceptions of crime and their subsequent influence on policing amid decreasing crime rates. It is argued that the forceful removal of all African American residents in 1912, the economic shift away from an agriculture and poultry-based industry, the construction of Lake Lanier and Buford Dam, the staggered expansion …

The Music And Politics Of Willy Chirino, Nancy N. Balcziunas

Benefits Of The International Image Interoperability Framework (Iiif) Featuring Medieval Palimpsest Manuscripts, Lisa Mcaulay

Digital Initiatives Symposium

The International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) is a community that develops shared application programming interfaces (APIs), or technical standards, for interoperability between digital image repositories. The IIIF specifications aim to give scholars an unprecedented level of uniform and rich access to image-based resources hosted around the world, with partners from national and state libraries, research institutions, museums, archives, software firms, and other groups working with digital image repositories and resources. The IIIF has grown from the community and relies on active participation and discussion to develop, cultivate and document shared technologies, such as image servers and web clients, that provide …

Progress, William Ciurylo

Finally, the weekend. Finally, free of the constraints of mandatory lectures and clinical experiences. Finally, freedom to work how and when I want to work; learn how and when I want to learn. The lack of structure is refreshing. I will be so productive. Finally. But first – I will sleep in. Might as well, I am free to do so after all. I am my own person for once. Just because I sleep in does not mean that I won’t master the material. I work better in the afternoons and evenings anyway. I deserve this after a week of …

1889 - Report Of The Commissioner Of Indian Affairs For 1889 May 2017

1889 - Report Of The Commissioner Of Indian Affairs For 1889

US and Indian Relations

Detailed report on the efforts by the US government to civilize, educate and provide moral training to the original inhabitants. This largely involved placing the Indians on reservations, teaching them agricultural and homebuilding skills, training them in proper dress and customs of the white man and providing opportunities for education. This report sets forth eight convictions of the Commissioner on the absorption of the Indians into the national life noting that, "They cannot escape it, and must either conform to it or be crushed by it."
