She Would Not Be Silenced: Mae West's Struggle Against Censorship, Charlotte N. Toledo

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

Mae West, an actress during Hollywood's Golden Age, used her fame on stage, in films, and on the radio to offer social commentary on relationships between men and women in society. Her irreverent style of addressing issues of female sexuality and power certainly caught peoples attention and made them think about these issues in new ways. At the same time, her racy delivery made her a target of stage, film, and radio censorship. She refused to be silenced and continually pushed against restrictions to deliver he message of empowerment in her trademark provocative manner.

Not So Revisionary: The Regressive Treatment Of Gender In Alan Moore's Watchmen, Anna C. Marshall May 2017

Not So Revisionary: The Regressive Treatment Of Gender In Alan Moore's Watchmen, Anna C. Marshall

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

While Alan Moore’s comic book Watchmen is often hailed as a revisionary text for introducing flawed superheroes and political anxiety to the genre, it is also remarkably regressive in its treatment of gender. Some critics do argue that women are given a newfound voice in Watchmen, but this interpretation neglects to examine character Laurie Jupiter adequately, or the ways in which other female characters' appearance and dialogue are limited and/or based on their sexuality and relationships with male characters. Watchmen's main female characters, mother and daughter Sally and Laurie Jupiter, lack autonomy and their identities are completely intertwined …

Interfaith Inquiry: Learning From Community-Based Research, Pluralism, And Student-Faculty Collaboration, John C. Waldmeir, John C. Eby, Samantha E. Eckrich, Rebecca A. Edwards

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

Abstract

On Catholic college campuses, community outreach and inter-faith cooperation occurs most often under the direction of Student Life Offices, often with strong leadership provided by Campus Ministry. Within this more traditional approach, students learn a great deal about the value of both enterprises, though their learning remains largely undocumented, unassessed and, without the benefit of earned credit hours, unrewarded.

A team of faculty and students at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa are in the process of a following a different approach. After five years of coordinating interfaith conversations and scripture study with centers of worship throughout the Dubuque area, …

Toward A Framework For Interfaith Leadership, Barbara A. Mcgraw May 2017

Toward A Framework For Interfaith Leadership, Barbara A. Mcgraw

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

Today there is a need for a vision of the world that takes account of religious, spiritual, and non-faith orientations in a way that promotes cooperation and resolves conflict. Educational programs that employ this article’s proposed four-dimensional interfaith leadership framework can contribute to that vision. Through dialogue for understanding and compassion, lens bias reflection and cognitive-affective frame-shifting, religious literacy, and leadership theory and practice, students can become socially conscious leaders who effect positive change in religiously diverse environments. This interfaith leadership framework is especially salient for Catholic institutions of higher education, but is readily extendable for use in other institutions.

In Our Time: Advancing Interfaith Studies Curricula At Catholic Colleges And Universities, Eboo Patel, Noah Silverman, Kristi Del Vecchio May 2017

In Our Time: Advancing Interfaith Studies Curricula At Catholic Colleges And Universities, Eboo Patel, Noah Silverman, Kristi Del Vecchio

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

People who orient around religion differently are interacting with greater frequency than ever before. These interactions, especially in the context of college and university campuses, require young people to grapple with their own identities in ways that previous generations could more easily avoid. Conversations about religious diversity have become elevated at colleges and universities, which has led Drs. Douglas Jacobsen and Rhonda Hustedt Jacobsen to claim that religion is “no longer invisible” in the context of American higher education.

As an organization that works with hundreds of American colleges and universities every year, Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) believes that Catholic …

Affirmation, Validation, And Empowerment: Influences Of A Composition Competition On Students’ Self-Concepts As Musicians, Daniel Albert May 2017

Affirmation, Validation, And Empowerment: Influences Of A Composition Competition On Students’ Self-Concepts As Musicians, Daniel Albert

Faculty Authored Articles

The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in a composition competition influenced four K–12 students’ self-concepts as musicians. Research questions explored motivations for these four students to enter into a composition competition, influences of the competition on students’ self-concepts as musicians (if at all), and effects of the competition besides those of self-concept as a musician (if at all). Data sources for this multiple case design study included semi-structured interviews, journals, and wiki interactions. Findings determined that acceptance to the competition, performance of students’ works, and the reception that students received validated and strengthened their self-concepts as …

Confederate Memory, Olivia Ortman May 2017

Confederate Memory, Olivia Ortman

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

This year as a CWI Fellow, I’ve been doing a lot of research and thinking on Civil War memory, specifically that of Confederate memory. When doing this work, the question at the back of my mind is always: How should monuments, symbols, and other examples of Confederate memory be handled? This is a very difficult question, so up until now, I’ve left it alone, knowing that there would come a time in the future that I would sit down and wrestle with my conflicting opinions on the matter. A couple days ago, the Civil War Era Studies Department here at …

"The Condition Of Women:" Gender, Sexuality, And The Patriarchy In Charlotte Bronte's Shirley And Villette, Alexis Noelle Robinson May 2017

"The Condition Of Women:" Gender, Sexuality, And The Patriarchy In Charlotte Bronte's Shirley And Villette, Alexis Noelle Robinson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The primary focus of this honors project is analyzing the ways in which Charlotte Brontë strategically deconstructs traditional heteronormative constructs of feminine gender and sexuality in two of her novels, Shirley and Villette. This project is split into two analytical documents: the first, an annotated bibliography assessing the critical, scholarly discourse on Shirley; the second, a critical assessment of Brontë's "novel of alternatives," Villette. Although this project is entitled "The Condition of Women," as Brontë scholars have dully noted the author's continued progression and revolutionary approach to Victorian normalizations of women, the didactic messages behind Brontë's novels ultimately need to …

Preserve Her Form, Hannah Morgan May 2017

Preserve Her Form, Hannah Morgan

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Nature versus nurture? Both principles recognize a facet of inheritance that dictates the development of personhood: there is genetic inheritance and there is acquired inheritance. I have used poetry to grapple with the narrative of my late sister and how her death became an acquired inheritance. Meaningful as it was to write through grief, I came to resent how her body -- the color of her hair, the tattoos -- became incessant images in my poems, like a default. I doubted whether I could write without her, my inescapable inheritance. This project explores the inheritance of bodies and faith, and …

The Writing Path To Healing: An Individual Study On Written Emotional Disclosure, Sarah Foster May 2017

The Writing Path To Healing: An Individual Study On Written Emotional Disclosure, Sarah Foster

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The purpose of this project is to provide writing prompts as an intervention method for adolescents who have experienced family violence and have been placed in the safe environment of family-style orphan care. The paper provides a literature review of writing as healing, also known as written emotional disclosure, in therapeutic contexts. Writing prompts are then presented designed for adolescents who have experienced complex trauma in the form of family violence. Each prompt has a specific purpose, but all prompts share a focus on empowering the adolescents to consider their identity, rise above hardships, and engage their past through reflective …

Indeterminacy As Social Practice In Contemporary Art Music, Lauren V. Coons May 2017

Indeterminacy As Social Practice In Contemporary Art Music, Lauren V. Coons

Music ETDs

This work examines the social practice element of contemporary indeterminate music. Through historical and critical research, and analysis of some contemporary indeterminate works, I provide a view of indeterminacy as a subversive experimental music practice that challenges both the forms of alienation present in Western art-music culture and the concepts and power structures that have contributed to them. I compare and contrast indeterminacy with other terms and concepts related to “open works,” specifically aleatory, chance, and improvisation. A discussion of various philosophical viewpoints regarding the concept of the musical “work” and the role of the composer reveal ways in which …

The Active Narrator: Fieldian Narration In Strachey And Woolf, Natalie I. Beyer May 2017

The Active Narrator: Fieldian Narration In Strachey And Woolf, Natalie I. Beyer

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Lytton Strachey, one of the most prominent members of the Bloomsbury Group, has long been regarded as creating "the new biography" with his book, Eminent Victorians. One of the more innovative techniques used in his biography was using active voice through his narrator, an element influenced by the narrative structure of Henry Fielding. Not only did Strachey change the field of historical biography with his active narrator and critiques on the discipline of biography itself, but he also influenced another huge presence in the Bloomsbury Group, Virginia Woolf. Years after Eminent Victorians, Woolf took Strachey's narrator and applied it two-fold …

A Theological Retrieval Of Communal Parenting As A Moral Response To Baby Stealing And Childlessness In Nigeria, Henry U. Omeike May 2017

A Theological Retrieval Of Communal Parenting As A Moral Response To Baby Stealing And Childlessness In Nigeria, Henry U. Omeike

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This thesis proposes the practice of communal parenting in the Igbo culture as critical to strengthening the godparent/godchild bond by way of offering a moral response to baby stealing and childlessness in Nigeria. It examines how practices such as spiritual intercession, catastrophic fertility expenditure, extramarital conception, baby stealing, and baby factories are impacting Igbo Christian families. It exposes the Igbo beliefs about marriage and fertility; explores the meaning of Igbo marriage, marital fruitfulness, and progeny, as well as the Igbo tradition of co-parenting and how this practice has responded to childlessness. It highlights how the Igbo society's shift from "co-parenting" …

Teufel Thinks That We Need Philosophers More Than Ever., Aldemaro Romero Jr. May 2017

Teufel Thinks That We Need Philosophers More Than Ever., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

Most people don’t know what a philosopher does, but philosophers take their profession seriously, no matter what first drew them into it. “I tried to decide what to do, and I figured one way to know how to become an artist would be to find out what philosophy is and also what philosophy is not in order to then be able to paint,” says Dr. Thomas Teufel, who initially wanted to become an artist.

“The word philosophy comes from the Greek ‘filo-sofía.’ Sofía means ‘wisdom,’ filo means ‘lover of.’ Thus, a philosopher is a lover of wisdom—as the Greeks would …
