Annotated Edition Of The Reminiscences Of Nate Salsbury, Katie Bowman, Frank Christianson May 2017

Annotated Edition Of The Reminiscences Of Nate Salsbury, Katie Bowman, Frank Christianson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this project was to prepare the unpublished manuscript Reminiscences of Nate Salsbury, written in the 1890s, for publication and to enter the critical conversation on the development of the frontier myth in American history. The first of three stages of the project was to do editorial work on the raw manuscript. The editing goal was to organize and clarify the narrated episodes of Nate Salsbury’s life in order to prepare it for optimal audience comprehension. Second, I thoroughly annotated the document and curated an appendix that situated the document in its historical and biographical context. Third, …

Emotional Truth In Fiction, Tamara Thomson, Stephen Tuttle May 2017

Emotional Truth In Fiction, Tamara Thomson, Stephen Tuttle

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the early 1990s I had the opportunity to work closely with a group of youth patients, staff members, and clinicians at the Utah State Hospital. During that time there were several accusations of misconduct of staff with the youth patients, some of whom I knew personally. My project has been to create six short stories dealing with the experiences of both the youth patients and the staff at the State Hospital that are based on the interviews I did with former patients, clinicians, and staff. I wanted to investigate the way specific individuals remembered incidents of misconduct and how …

This will make it possible for scholars, students, educators, and the art community around the world to have access to Olga Wisinger-Florian’s work.

Western Philosophy: A New Story For A New Generation, Stephanie Harrison, Dr. Dennis Packard May 2017

Western Philosophy: A New Story For A New Generation, Stephanie Harrison, Dr. Dennis Packard

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the fall semester of 2015, Dr. Packard approached me after class one day when he noticed from the class roll that I had a minor in visual arts. He came to me with an offer to help him do graphic design for a textbook he was making, an offer which I gratefully accepted. After securing funding for the project through the generosity of the ORCA grant I received, we set to work creating a textbook that would tell the story of Western philosophy in a way it had never before been told.

Interpreting Art History By Brazillian Modernist Anuta Malfatti, Michelle Turner, Rex Nielson May 2017

Interpreting Art History By Brazillian Modernist Anuta Malfatti, Michelle Turner, Rex Nielson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project is centered around the artist Anita Malfatti and her teaching of art history. Malfatti was an instrumental figure in the development of Brazilian Modernism. Leaving an oeuvre composed primarily of portraits and landscapes, the majority of critics and scholars have been dedicated to recognizing interactions Malfatti had with artists in Germany and New York. She continued to paint and depict Brazilian life throughout her life but also was a teacher of art and art history.

Her lectures still exist in notebooks, though under-researched and unpublished. The main goal of this research was to access her archive, then transcribe …

Slavery, Civil War, And Contemporary Public Opinion In The South, Madison R. Swiney May 2017

Slavery, Civil War, And Contemporary Public Opinion In The South, Madison R. Swiney

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

This paper is an empirical extension of Avidit Acharya, Matthew Blackwell, and Maya Sen’s piece (forthcoming), “A Culture of Disenfranchisement: How American Slavery Continues to Affect Voting Behavior.” In their project, Acharya, Blackwell and Sen (forthcoming) show that the counties that had more slaves versus free population in the nineteenth century are more likely to exhibit conservative attitudes in contemporary elections. I am extending this argument by measuring potential influence of Civil War battlegrounds on recent voting patterns and political predispositions. My project finds further support for Acharya, Blackwell and Sen’s study on the predictive power …

The South Vs Leo Frank: Effects Of Southern Culture On The Leo Frank Case 1913-1915, Kellye Cole May 2017

The South Vs Leo Frank: Effects Of Southern Culture On The Leo Frank Case 1913-1915, Kellye Cole

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

In 1915, a young man from New York became the only Jewish person ever lynched in America. This paper analyzes primary and secondary sources including newspapers, magazines and personal accounts to consider the events that led to Leo Frank’s death in Georgia. Anti-Semitism, populism, racism, and newspaper coverage all infected the case. Despite extensive analysis in historical and popular works, the culture of Southern honor has typically been relegated to a minor role in the case. This study challenges the widely held assumption that anti-Semitism was the main impetus for the lynching and instead focuses on the culture of Southern …

“Tú Hablas Ahora:” Viequense Female Archetype And Agency In The Works Of Carmelo Rodríguez Torres, Emma T. Comery May 2017

“Tú Hablas Ahora:” Viequense Female Archetype And Agency In The Works Of Carmelo Rodríguez Torres, Emma T. Comery

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

Author Carmelo Rodríguez Torres incorporates many of his experiences with the U.S. naval occupation of Vieques, Puerto Rico into his novels and short stories. Few scholars have written on Torres, and even fewer have discussed him in terms of womanhood and feminism. Yet central to many of his works are figures of womanhood that are at once archetypal and progressive. In my paper I investigate Torres' treatment of his female characters in all his novels and two of his short stories. I place his presentation of women within the context of the U.S. occupation of Puerto Rico and its feminist …

Material, Trace, Trauma: Notes On Some Recent Acquisitions At The Canadian War Museum And The Legacy Of The First World War, Christine Conley May 2017

Material, Trace, Trauma: Notes On Some Recent Acquisitions At The Canadian War Museum And The Legacy Of The First World War, Christine Conley

Canadian Military History

Recent acquisitions at the Canadian War Museum are considered in relation to the radical innovations of soldier-artists who endured the somatic conditions of the First World War trenches, privileging materiality and psychic reality over visual perception. Barbara Steinman and Norman Takeuchi bring the past into the present through the indexical presence of black and white photographic fragments and the emotive presentation of lost objects as signifiers of the desires of the absent. Scott Waters and Mary Kavanagh evoke dread and the contingency of death through anamorphic distortion and blinding luminosity. Like the suggestive surfaces of the Museum itself, these works …

Colville To Goble: Some Thoughts On The Evolving Place Of Photography In Canadian Military Art, Laura Brandon May 2017

Colville To Goble: Some Thoughts On The Evolving Place Of Photography In Canadian Military Art, Laura Brandon

Canadian Military History

This article focuses on the photographic work of two Canadian military artists whose careers are separated by half a century. Alex Colville (1920–2013) used photography in his work but rarely mentioned it and never publicly exhibited or acknowledged it. Elaine Goble (born 1956) bases all her work on photography, engages explicitly with it, acknowledges it, exhibits and donates it, but does not consider herself a professional photographer. An exploration of these two artists’ relationship with photography sheds some light on how attitudes to the medium have changed in recent decades. Photography’s new prominence in the digital age has affected artists, …

Collection Of Poems, Price W. Hall

OSRI Journal of Student Research and Innovation

Student’s name omitted writes poems informed by the restorative vigor of nature, the sheer beauty of natural systems ordered by the same physical laws which govern the orbits of planets around our star and holds tight the moons circling them. As if beyond the sequenced cadence of time he holds memories remembered as valid as the experiential feast set before him every day in the nuance of light at dawn or dusk, the dying leaves bleeding out green or the thousand shades of brown of the cut soil of the furrows in a plowed field, and clouds seem to seduce …

Ghost In The Closet: Other Voices, Other Rooms And The Queer Gothic Family, Bri Lafond May 2017

Ghost In The Closet: Other Voices, Other Rooms And The Queer Gothic Family, Bri Lafond

OSRI Journal of Student Research and Innovation

The young queer characters in Truman Capote's Other Voices, Other Rooms—especially the protagonist, Joel Harrison Knox—is able to carve out a legitimate space for themselves within heteronormative society; however, they do not achieve full equality, and their fates may even be read as a reiteration of the status quo. I argue that the novel is less about individual queer actualization, but rather about establishing larger support structures for the queer community, particularly in the form of the specially chosen—or curated—family. In particular, Capote harnesses the tropes of Southern Gothicism by symbolizing family structures—both extant and burgeoning— Through a series of …

The Face That Launched A Thousand Ships: Helen Of Troy In The Poetry Of Atwood And Tufts, Alea Walstrom

OSRI Journal of Student Research and Innovation

This paper considers the transformation of Greek myth over time, how character’s attributes change over time, and ultimately how contemporary poets employ these myths. The myth of focus in the paper is that of Helen of Troy and the depiction of her character throughout the many years and variations of the myth. Her character is then considered in the contemporary feminist poetry of Carol Tufts and Margaret Atwood.
