Feminism In Biology And Belief, Rachel Hurst May 2017

Feminism In Biology And Belief, Rachel Hurst

Dialogue & Nexus

As feminism has become more hotly-contested in today’s society, the need to analyze the movement’s claims from a scientific and theological perspective has developed. Labor statistics and sociological research reveal that income inequality persists between the sexes. Neuroscience and evolutionary psychology show that subtle differences exist between male and female brains, and these slight variations can potentially be traced to the differing selective pressures between the genders. Ultimately, the biological differences that favor power differentials must be overcome to remedy inequality and injustice. Although Christians have historically upheld these differences and viewed women as inferior, a more modern theological understanding …

“Bone Of My Bones And Flesh Of My Flesh”: A Feminist Analysis Of Christianity, Evolutionary Theory, And The Provenance Of Patriarchy, Heather Bishop May 2017

“Bone Of My Bones And Flesh Of My Flesh”: A Feminist Analysis Of Christianity, Evolutionary Theory, And The Provenance Of Patriarchy, Heather Bishop

Dialogue & Nexus

While perceived by many as conflicting in nearly every sphere, science and religion both play an important role in the promotion of patriarchal ideologies. My research has found that neither Christianity nor evolutionary theory are inherently patriarchal, neither do they justify patriarchy. Instead, it is the misinterpretation and misuse of these subjects that contribute to the justification of patriarchy for the deep-seated goal of reproductive power. I will show this by analyzing theological themes present throughout the Christian scriptures, as well as investigating findings of evolutionary psychology and hominid ancestry. The implication of this study is that there is no …

Science And Religion On Sexual Orientation, A.N. Scout May 2017

Science And Religion On Sexual Orientation, A.N. Scout

Dialogue & Nexus

An analysis of scientific and religious perspectives on sexual orientation will show that the scientific data support a biological origin of sexual orientation that is influenced but not determined by environmental conditions. Religious perspectives will show values affirming equality and integrity are of greater importance than the conditioned attitudes that condemn homosexuality. As a result, forgiveness and acceptance are paramount in dealing with others as they struggle to know Christ. Commitment within a relationship is paramount regardless of the couple’s orientation.

Science, God, And Sexual Orientation, Devin Baker May 2017

Science, God, And Sexual Orientation, Devin Baker

Dialogue & Nexus

Sexual orientation is a modern and complex term for sexual attractions and behaviors that have been experienced throughout history. Science and religion have both taken stances on the origin and ethics of sexual orientation. Research done in both fields has begun to shed light on the fact that there is an innate biological cause for sexual orientation, and that the Bible might offer a more positive view on non-heterosexual orientations than previously thought.

Fredericksburg’S Gray Angel: Truth Or Utility?, Jonathan G. Danchik May 2017

Fredericksburg’S Gray Angel: Truth Or Utility?, Jonathan G. Danchik

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

As with other battles, the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 yielded shocking results. Homes were destroyed, thousands died, and military doctrine was challenged and changed. One particular story, however, has emerged from Fredericksburg to represent a different narrative, one of compassion. The actions of a 20-year-old Confederate sergeant named Richard Rowland Kirkland are enshrined in stone at the end of Fredericksburg’s infamous “Sunken Road.”

The Rhetoric Of Disability: An Analysis Of The Language Of University Disability Service Centers, Katie Ratermann May 2017

The Rhetoric Of Disability: An Analysis Of The Language Of University Disability Service Centers, Katie Ratermann

English (MA) Theses

The language on university websites and the policies provided by Disability Services provide material for a rhetorical analysis addressing the marginalization of students with disabilities on college campuses. In this thesis, I discuss the degree to which university distributed texts marginalize students with disabilities. My discussion begins with commentary on Critical Disability Studies, the theoretical influence for this thesis. Following the discussion of theoretical modes in disability studies is a brief commentary on the history of disabilities in academic contexts. After historically contextualizing Disability Services on university campuses, I analyze the rhetoric of San Diego State University (SDSU) and the …

Using Reading Strategies To Differentiate Reading Instruction, Kari Allsup, Dawan Coombs May 2017

Using Reading Strategies To Differentiate Reading Instruction, Kari Allsup, Dawan Coombs

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Struggling readers have often developed learning strategies, but not strategies that help them become better readers. Consider, a student who is checked out every day before English to avoid the discomfort of reading aloud, a student who gets up every few minutes to sharpen pencils to avoid a difficult task, a student who knows how to look busy in ways that disguise a lack of comprehension. In contrast to these strategies, reading strategies can empower students to succeed, not merely avoid reading. This study examined three reading strategies within the context of a reader’s theatre focused on the drama, The …

My Giants, Teodora Altomare May 2017

My Giants, Teodora Altomare

Theses and Dissertations

My Giants is a thirty minute documentary about two journeys. During the first, in 2015, the filmmaker documented the story of Xylella fastidiosa, a bacteria responsible for the loss of many thousand-year-old olive trees in the Italian region of Puglia. During the second visit, in 2016, she witnessed the illness of her father.

By weaving together the two stories, My Giants is a snapshot of a transitional moment in the filmmaker’s life, a moment when illness became an opportunity to reconnect with her roots.

Separation In The Sara Female Initiation Ceremony, Kelsey Moe May 2017

Separation In The Sara Female Initiation Ceremony, Kelsey Moe

Religious Studies Undergraduate Research

This paper employs hermeneutics as opposed to a comparative, explanatory, or descriptive method to engage the phenomenon of Sara female initiation as captured by Lori Leonard’s ethnography, “Female Circumcision in Southern Chad: Origins, Meaning, and Current Practice.” The Sara people of Southern Chad – although predominantly Christian – have their roots in a pre-colonial religion that reveres ancestors. The spirits of Sara ancestors are believed to exist in the bush outside of the village. In the female initiation ceremony, girls are removed from the village and enter the surrounding bush to undergo the ritual transition. This separation is key to …

Tierno Monénembo Et L'Écriture De La Saga Sandervalienne: Réhabilitation Mémorielle Et Fracture Coloniale, Stephanie Diane Tsakeu Mazan May 2017

Tierno Monénembo Et L'Écriture De La Saga Sandervalienne: Réhabilitation Mémorielle Et Fracture Coloniale, Stephanie Diane Tsakeu Mazan

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This work examines Olivier de Sanderval’s saga in Tierno Monénembo’s most studied novels Peuls and Le Roi de Kahel (The King of Kahel). The celebration of a colonialist within the novel leads us to argue that, in The King of Kahel by using literary forms and genres like the novel, the epic, the biography, the palimpsest, plagiarism, irony etc., to rehabilitate Olivier de Sanderval’s memory, the author offers the possibility to question the colonial fracture. In the first part we examine Olivier de Sanderval’s evolutionary representation in Monénembo’s texts. First disparaged in Peuls, where the author revisits …

How Anti-Racist Participatory Policy Advocacy Can Change Delaware’S Education System, Shyanne Miller May 2017

How Anti-Racist Participatory Policy Advocacy Can Change Delaware’S Education System, Shyanne Miller

Capstone Collection

Non-profit organizations fighting for change in the education system are more likely to realize their mission by engaging members of the public, particularly parents and students. However, engaging the public in a meaningful way requires an understanding of barriers to participation in the education system (racism), a shift away from colorblind, liberal ideology typically used to drive non-profit activity, and the undertaking of an anti-racist agenda when working within communities. Here, I offer a set of guidelines which the Rodel Foundation of Delaware can follow to implement anti-racist, participatory policy advocacy. Starting with a review of racism in Delaware’s education …
