As World War II neared its end in Europe, the Allied powers faced a difficult situation with the occupied nation of Austria. Considering the complicated Austrian relationship with Nazism, the Allies had to decide how the nation would be liberated, occupied, and rehabilitated. Almost instantaneously, the United States, Great Britain, and France became at odds with a vengeful Soviet Union seeking to build a defensive shield of Communist European client states that included Austria. This study will show that as the head of the American Legal Division, Col. Eberhard P. Deutsch, United States Army, was instrumental in the reformation of …

Codofil's Ally: Local French Teachers In Louisiana, Natalie Ducote

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 1968, in the midst of the Civil Rights Era, the Louisiana government created the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL). During this period of heightened ethnic awareness, CODOFIL aimed to rectify the damage done by prior Louisiana legislation, which prohibited French language on public school grounds. In an effort to revitalize the French language in Louisiana, the organization hired teachers from foreign francophone countries and advocated for a curriculum rooted in Standard French. According to historians, many locals felt Louisiana-specific French dialects were once again rejected. Alongside these foreign teachers were teachers local to Louisiana. Utilizing …

These female writers are calling attention to the pandemic of misogyny-related violence and allowing assault survivors to speak through their pain.

The 773rd Tank Destroyer Battalion At The Falaise Pocket, 1944: The Application Of Tank Destroyer Doctrine In The Field, Logan M. Gross

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

During World War II, the United States Army employed a new weapon on the battlefield in an attempt to defeat German armor tactics: the tank destroyer. Tank Destroyer Force was created to stem the tide of German armored attacks and form an opening for American tanks to make their own counter-attacks. Since the end of the war, tank destroyer battalions have been regarded as a failed experiment, despite the evidence that they effectively did their jobs. The negative feedback in the immediate post-war period lead to the dissolution of the Tank Destroyer Force. Many of the studies of tank destroyers …

Ripple, Tyler P. Haney May 2017

Ripple, Tyler P. Haney

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

My work leverages the dynamic processes the brain uses to compute visual stimuli to influence how viewers experience my work. My aim is to create a ripple effect as the brain processes the visual information I provide.

My process begins with a camera. Focusing on the face, I see how much contextual information I can remove while still capturing the emotional expression of the subject. Before long, a photograph ends up next to a canvas where I will rebuild the image from the photograph using a myriad of expressionistic marks and colors to amplify the emotion.

Recognizing human emotion is …

Zig Zag Wanderer, Samuel S. Williams

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Narratives recollected from popular sources such as podcast and websites often inspire my animations, paintings, and drawings. My work serves as a pictorial manifestation of everything from visualized passages in literature to eavesdropping. I zigzag from one source to another, combining found images that are loosely associated with one another. I combine them in a simulated collage in order to form an interesting composition. My purpose is to create a magical moment that pulls us away from the monotony of life. Storytelling not only allows one to see oneself and how one relates to others, but it also can provide …

Navigating The Moral Pitfalls Of The Service Industry "The Book Of Snake", Paul S. Punzo

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis paper examines how I turned real life experiences and observations into a fictionalized screenplay that explores the potential for vice inherent in tip-based service industry jobs. After that, I move on to the preproduction process and touch on casting, location scouting, visualization, production design, budgeting and crewing. Next I discuss how the preproduction and on-set efforts of individuals were all critical to our production. Then I chronicle the ups and downs of postproduction. Finally, I conclude with an admittedly subjective analysis of the effectiveness of the movie itself.
