Description:
Eugene Rochow was an early member and served on the board of the Matlovich Society, a Portland-based organization that provided an educational and cultural forum for the local gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning community during the 1990s. The Papers document the Matlovich Society between 1991 and 1996 and other organizations and events in the LGBT community. The majority of the papers in this collection are records of the Matlovich Society which Rochow retained after the organization ceased in 1999. The collection also includes documents related to Equal Protection Portland, an initiative in 1992 to pass and protect a …

Roman Féminin Africain : Pour Une Géocritique, Mbaye Diouf
Roman Féminin Africain : Pour Une Géocritique, Mbaye Diouf
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Based on novels published in the 2000s by Fatou Diome and Bessora, this article poses that in a postcolonial context marked by the intensification of population migration, as well as the international circulation of authors and the renewal of aesthetic categories, the current generation of female African novelists are constructing a new imaginary of space that resemanticizes textual territories through literary languages that are both unusual and personalized. Novels like Cyr@no or Le ventre de l’Atlantique rectify the real insular or urban topographies to which they refer by giving a connotated or new meaning to their own narrative, descriptive and …
The writing of Félix Couchoro, member of the first generation of the Francophone African writers, problematizes the historical, cultural, political and geographic background of the railway system built at the beginning of the twentieth century in Togo. In that problematizing, Félix Couchoro’s writing is in accordance with the geocritic principles as well as those of the postcolonial perspective. By putting those two perspectives together, however, in the reading of that writer’s work, one should go beyond the epistemological frame of the geocritic perspective itself, notably its use of the western postmodern paradigm of indetermination, when it comes to the Francophone …

Review: “Jeffrey Geiger And Karin Littau (Eds.): Cinematicity In Media History”, Andrew Behrendt
Review: “Jeffrey Geiger And Karin Littau (Eds.): Cinematicity In Media History”, Andrew Behrendt
History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Let the appearance of jargon in this book’s title deter no one: Cinematicity in Media History is an inviting, interdisciplinary collection of essays on the question of what it has meant to interact with moving images in the modern era. The volume mounts a welcome opposition to the teleological pitfalls of what W. Russell Neuman has termed the “heroic” and “systemic” models of media history, whereby valiant geniuses produce revolutionary inventions and each new media format/device is destined to give way to the next and disappear dutifully into obsolescence (Neuman 2010: 6–11). The essays in Cinematicity strike a collective blow …
Eighteenth Century Women And The Business Of Making Glass Music, Kate M. Hepworth
Eighteenth Century Women And The Business Of Making Glass Music, Kate M. Hepworth
History
During the relatively short period from the mid-to-late eighteenth century when glass musical instruments were manufactured and gained popularity, several women made names for themselves in the realm of avant-garde musical performance. The lives of three female glass instrument players: Anne Ford, Marianne Davies, and Marianne Kirchgassner, show how these successful performer-entrepreneurs operated in an age of emerging feminine public identity. Their journeys reveal much about the gender dimensions of the age, the role of music in the modern era, the consumption of it, and their approach to business. The financial opportunities presented to women looking to challenge the limitations …
Investigating Linguistic, Literary, And Social Affordances Of L2 Collaborative Reading, Joshua Thoms, Frederick J. Poole
Investigating Linguistic, Literary, And Social Affordances Of L2 Collaborative Reading, Joshua Thoms, Frederick J. Poole
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This exploratory study analyzes learner–learner interactions within a virtual environment when collaboratively reading Spanish poetry in a Hispanic literature course at the college level via an ecological theoretical perspective (van Lier, 2004). The goals of the study are (a) to present empirical data that illustrate the theoretical construct of affordance in a virtual, collaborative reading environment, and (b) to investigate the pedagogical ramifications of using a digital annotation tool to involve learners in collaborative reading. Three distinct types of affordances emerged in the data: linguistic, literary, and social affordances. Our findings indicate that the number of literary and social affordances …

Salvation: Into The Cosmos: Board Game Project Blending 4x And Eurogame Styles, Zachary Stewart Griffith
Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies
This project is an attempt at creating a shorter and simpler 4X strategy game. To do this, the author takes elements of the Eurogame genre and combines aspects of The Settlers of Catan by Klaus Teuber and Shattered Plans by Jagex while following the requirements of the German board game award, the Spiel de Jahres. After following the traditional game design process of conceptualization, prototyping, and repeated testing, analysis, and revision, the author succeeded in creating a core foundation for such a game that also had marketing potential on its own.

Versions And Versioning: A Critical Archive Of D. H. Lawrence, Paul Eggert
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The essay gives an account of the dealings of the editors of the Cambridge University Press Works of D. H. Lawrence series with the archive of Lawrence manuscript and other materials distributed in special collections of libraries around the world, collected mainly from the 1950s as his star began to rise. The essay considers the recent arguments of Suzanne Bost, making use of Jacques Derrida’s argument in his essay ‘Archive Fever’, about the inevitably preconditioned interpretation of archival materials (Derrida) and the need to give them air before settling into a program of editorial or other analysis (Bost). The essay …
