Fourth Annual Chapman Staff Art Exhibition, Chapman University Staff
Library Displays and Bibliographies
The Leatherby Libraries Hall of Art was established to showcase the creativity of the Chapman community. It was dedicated for this purpose in 2014 although the space has been available for staff and student exhibits since 2011. The Hall of Art is devoted exclusively to the display of student work during the academic year, and to staff art during the summer. While past staff art exhibits featured work by Leatherby Libraries staff members only, this is our second year opening up the exhibit to any interested staff member of Chapman University. The sixteen artists represented here demonstrate the wide variety …
The Heyday Of Hats A Look At Headwear In The 1950s, Kirsten Watkins, Mary Farahnakian
The Heyday Of Hats A Look At Headwear In The 1950s, Kirsten Watkins, Mary Farahnakian
Journal of Undergraduate Research
With the end of World War II came a drastic change in fashion. Gone were the stiff shoulders and narrow silhouettes and in came the New Look of 1947, designed by Christian Dior. This look emphasized soft curves, narrow waists, and large wide skirts—a far cry from wartime fashions where fabric was rationed and such skirts were seen as a luxury that few could afford. With this change of fashion came a change in hats. While wartime hats were still widely worn, many new hats came onto the scene. This decade became the culmination of different hat styles from the …

My Burden, Alena Randolph, Bryon Draper
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Throughout the past year, I have been working to create a sculptural piece that conveys the conflict side of the human condition; namely the burdens we all carry. This is an ongoing project, estimated to be completed in Fall 2016. My hope is to display it in the upcoming Zion Art Competition. Afterward I hope to continue to show it to a variety of audiences in an effort to create further discussion on the subject matter.

A Study Of The Variances Between China’S And The United State’S Dance Education Strategies, Tessa Homer, Kate Monson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As a dance education major at Brigham Young University (BYU), my constant goal is to improve my teaching strategies by studying methods of effective teaching and observing my professors. Through my dance and education courses at BYU, I have developed a personal teaching style and toolbox of different strategies and methods. The opportunity to travel to China and participate in prestigious dance courses expanded my knowledge of diverse teaching methods and styles. This project enabled me to recognize, study, and compare the various strategies of effective dance education in the United States and China and implement those techniques into my …
Tremors: A Musical Exploration Of Modern Faith, Asher Bay, Christian Asplund
Tremors: A Musical Exploration Of Modern Faith, Asher Bay, Christian Asplund
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Under the guidance of Professor Christian Asplund, I composed and produced a concept EP addressing the complexity of modern faith. The purpose of the project was to validate trials of faith that often are otherwise unspoken in our community and to encourage people to continue authentically seeking truth, despite the pain that often transpires. The EP contains seven tracks totaling twelve minutes of music. Its Internet release is scheduled for the beginning of 2017 and will be accompanied by a listening event.

Settler Visions Of Health: Health Care Provision In The Central African Federation, 1953-1963, Catherine Janet Valentine
Settler Visions Of Health: Health Care Provision In The Central African Federation, 1953-1963, Catherine Janet Valentine
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines healthcare provision in the Central African Federation, the late colonial union between the British colonies of Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland (the later independent nations of Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi respectively). Unusually in federal formations, healthcare delivery in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland became a federal function. "Settler Visions of Health" seeks to explain how the white settler elite reconciled the language of development and multiracial partnership with the underlying values of a settler society. Throughout its short existence, the Federal Health Service maintained a celebratory narrative of success designed to legitimize and justify both …

“Can You Believe They Think I’M Intimidating?” An Exploration Of Identity In Tall Women, Elizabeth Joy Fuller
“Can You Believe They Think I’M Intimidating?” An Exploration Of Identity In Tall Women, Elizabeth Joy Fuller
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the United States today, there is a dominant cultural narrative telling us that tallness is desirable and enjoyed by those who experience it. Much of the existing research on height correlates tallness with promotions, higher salaries, and general happiness. However, this research does not take into account the limitations of some of the previous research which tends to accept tall people’s vocabulary of motives at face value as the totality of their experience as a tall person. In particular, tall women tend to have much more to say about their lives as tall women than simply that it has …
Art History And The Global Challenge: A Critical Perspective, Paula Barreiro López
Art History And The Global Challenge: A Critical Perspective, Paula Barreiro López
Artl@s Bulletin
The challenge of globalization and the “decolonization” of our way of thinking have become a major concern for most art historians. While it is still too early to assess the impact on the discipline of the “Global turn”—a turn that is all the more timid that it materializes more slowly in public collections and public opinions than in books—we nonetheless wanted to probe scholars who are paying close attention to the new practices in global art history. Coming from different cultural milieus and academic traditions, and belonging to different generations, they agreed to answer our questions, and to share with …

The Virgin Mary: A Liberator For Women, Egan Rachel
The Virgin Mary: A Liberator For Women, Egan Rachel
Denison Journal of Religion
The Virgin Mary has had several titles in her long history, and these titles correlate with how she is understood by Catholics. During the Second Vatican Council, there were some who wanted to add the title of co-redemptrix to the long list of names associated with her, but the effort did not succeed. The Council explained its decision by claiming that there was biblical evidence of Mary being within the Church, but not above it. Egan asks how one can base this decision on iblical evidence when the stories and opinions associated with Mary differ so greatly. In the Gospel …
Sexuality: Confronting Religion's Taboo, James Boyd
Sexuality: Confronting Religion's Taboo, James Boyd
Denison Journal of Religion
Sexuality has become ubiquitous in mainstream media and culture. Despite this, or maybe because of it, sexuality remains a topic on which religion passes judgment. Because of this, many people find a tension growing in their lives when they attempt to enjoy their sexuality and remain a part of their faith community. This tension is inspiring scholarship and reflection that is trying to establish a new sexual ethic. This article focuses, in part, on Lewis B. Smedes, who promotes sexuality as an intimate communion between two married people by claiming that they are physical beings as much as they are …
"New Elemental Force": The Necessity Of An Engaged Poetry, Mary Ann Davis
"New Elemental Force": The Necessity Of An Engaged Poetry, Mary Ann Davis
Denison Journal of Religion
This essay explores the undeniable influence Zen Buddhism has had on American poets and poetry of recent years. The poets who are often recognized for the influence of Buddhism in their work are, however, frequently only white men. Despite this, a new emphasis on social issues and human rights is coming to the forefront in Buddhism. This influence is becoming so strong in some circles that many are claiming it is a new form of Buddhism, socially engaged Buddhism. Will this incarnation of Buddhism begin to influence American poetry to create an engaged poetry that is inherently about social change? …
Freedom, Knowledge And Relationship In The Genesis Story Of Temptation, Kelly Riggle
Freedom, Knowledge And Relationship In The Genesis Story Of Temptation, Kelly Riggle
Denison Journal of Religion
The narrative of "the Fall" is the one of the best known Bible stories. Over the centuries, it has provided a religious and cultural understanding of humanity and how we relate to each other and to divinity. This essay asks if the notion of sin and punishment frequently associated with the story is the only interpretation available for Genesis Chapter 3. Riggle argues that understanding this story as a temptation narrative instead of the pinnacle moment in humanity's "fall" offers a new example of the relationship that exists between humanity and divinity. Viewing the story through the lens of temptation …
Abraham Joshua Heschel And Theology After The Holocaust, Matthew Eanet
Abraham Joshua Heschel And Theology After The Holocaust, Matthew Eanet
Denison Journal of Religion
This essay explores Abraham Joshua Heschel's post-Holocaust theology as a hopeful, worship-oriented option that can continue to be a source of comfort and inspiration to men and women struggling through tragedies today. The memory of the Holocaust can easily inspire a crisis of faith. In fact, post-Holocaust theology is frequently defined by this crisis.
The theology of Abraham Joshua Heschel, an Eastern European Jew who barely escaped the death camps, however, continued to assert the active existence of God. By exploring religion in terms of polarities"Sinai (the starting place of his people) and Auschwitz (a deplorable end for many of …

Stereoviews were created by using a twin-lens camera that captured the same subject from two slightly different angles. The photographer then placed the two images on a stereoview card that could be inserted into a special viewer that merged the two images together and created a life-like, three-dimensional image. Stereoviews’ low cost meant they were an inexpensive way to insert one’s self into realistic three-dimensional scenes like the pictured contraband camp.

The Validity Of Historical Narrative And Its Use In Teaching History, Justin Taylor Ramsey
The Validity Of Historical Narrative And Its Use In Teaching History, Justin Taylor Ramsey
Honors Projects
There is an effective way to teach high school history, put the content into narrative form. 'Narrative form' can be expressed in various ways: from historically-based literature to in-class creative-writes, from museum visits to book clubs, etc. Many educators across the United States recognize that incorporating 'narrative' into the classroom is conducive to greater student-learning than other methods of history instruction. These conclusions are supported by several recent studies from cognitive scientists who demonstrate that humans are predisposed to understand information in narrative form. Last, I provide evidence from my own teaching experience: analysis of previously taught lessons, along with …

Sloan On Geopolitics, Geography, And Strategy History In Geopolitics, Bert Chapman
Sloan On Geopolitics, Geography, And Strategy History In Geopolitics, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Geopolitical literature is experiencing a renaissance and scholars representing classical and critical perspectives in this field bring multifaceted assessments to historical and current international political and security issues. Sloan’s Geopolitics, Geography and Strategic History, which is part of Routledge’s Geopolitical Theory Series, examines connections between geography, strategy, and history and is the subject of this review and analysis. Three thesis questions examined by the author include why the geographical scope of political objectives and following strategies of nation states change, how do these changes occur, and over what time period do these changes occur. Sloan examines why the geopolitical theories …
