“That’S Why I Say Stay In School”: Black Mothers’ Parental Involvement, Cultural Wealth, And Exclusion In Their Son’S Schooling, Quaylan Allen, Kimberly A. White-Smith

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This study examines parental involvement practices, the cultural wealth, and school experiences of poor and working-class mothers of Black boys. Drawing upon data from an ethnographic study, we examine qualitative interviews with four Black mothers. Using critical race theory and cultural wealth frameworks, we explore the mothers’ approaches to supporting their sons’ education. We also describe how the mothers and their sons experienced exclusion from the school, and how this exclusion limited the mothers’ involvement. We highlight their agency in making use of particular forms of cultural wealth in responding to the school’s failure of their sons.

Identity And Community In Rural Higher Education: Creating New Pathways To Women's Leadership In Oaxaca, Mexico, Amanda Marie Elder Jun 2017

Identity And Community In Rural Higher Education: Creating New Pathways To Women's Leadership In Oaxaca, Mexico, Amanda Marie Elder

Dissertations and Theses

The emergence of higher education opportunities in rural areas of Mexico such as throughout the state of Oaxaca has opened new opportunities for young women's professional development and new individual and community identities. I explore tensions between the collective imaginary of rural Mexico and rural women's emerging sense of independence and self-determination in light of higher education's expanding opportunities. Educational opportunities lead to community formation around commonality of experience in addition to ascribed community relationships and roles. I situate this analysis within the context of the Universidad Tecnológica de los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca (UT), a small university in San …

Shouts Of The Khori-Challwa: Andean Mythological And Cosmological Reconsiderations Of The American Identity In Gamaliel Churata’S El Pez De Oro, Stephen Delaney Mcnabb Jun 2017

Shouts Of The Khori-Challwa: Andean Mythological And Cosmological Reconsiderations Of The American Identity In Gamaliel Churata’S El Pez De Oro, Stephen Delaney Mcnabb

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the possible creation of a new categorization of American Literature as presented in the Andean novel El pez de oro: Retablos del Laykhakuy (1957) by Gamaliel Churata. In El pez de oro, Gamaliel Churata presents a strategy for the recuperation of native Andean cultural agency that enables the Andean subject to reclaim traces of their ancestral past under more verisimilar and verifiable terms. Churata argues that through a recuperation of native language and its infusion into the body of the major colonial language, Spanish, the Andean subject is equipped with a new culture producing tool that …

The Riddle Of Malnutrition : The Long Arc Of Biomedical And Public Health Interventions In Uganda, Jennifer Tappan Jun 2017

The Riddle Of Malnutrition : The Long Arc Of Biomedical And Public Health Interventions In Uganda, Jennifer Tappan

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

More than ten million children suffer from severe acute malnutrition globally each year. In Uganda, longstanding efforts to understand, treat, and then prevent the condition initially served to medicalize it, in the eyes of both biomedical personnel and Ugandans who brought their children to the hospital for treatment and care. Medicalization meant malnutrition came to be seen as a disease—as a medical emergency—not a preventable condition, further compromising nutritional health in Uganda.

Rather than rely on a foreign-led model, physicians in Uganda responded to this failure by developing a novel public health program known as Mwanamugimu. The new approach prioritized …

(Un)Documented, A Narrative Of M— In Letters To/From Us Institutions, Randy Gonzales Jun 2017

(Un)Documented, A Narrative Of M— In Letters To/From Us Institutions, Randy Gonzales

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Government documents like military and civil service personnel files are excellent sources of information for life writers, but the prioritization of information obscures features of the source document, often stripping genre, style, tone, and voice from content. This composition seeks to tell a compelling story, while maintaining features of the documents in the military and civil service files of M—, a Filipino immigrant who joined the US Navy in 1908. The source documents, mostly letters, are selected, edited, condensed, and annotated to tell a story about migration, labor, and citizenship. The documents highlight the relationship between record keeping and human …

Photo Synthesis: The Expatriate Family Album As Historiography, Kamayani Sharma Ms Jun 2017

Photo Synthesis: The Expatriate Family Album As Historiography, Kamayani Sharma Ms

Proceedings from the Document Academy

I want to look at the expatriate family album as a site of history-writing.

Through an examination of three photographs from my childhood in West Asia, I try to think about the idea of historical space and time through the visual narratives available to me of my own family.

This essay will be an exploration of the way in which nostalgia for a personal past gets imbricated within the shared experience of a bygone cultural moment.

I am interested in how an encounter with visual material from private archives initiates memory work and how these traces from the past can …

The Notebook, Pamela V. Flores-Lowry

Proceedings from the Document Academy

"The Notebook" explores the feelings of a young adult who finds, without looking, her lover's journal. This situation triggers a set of questions about past relationships and privacy at an age where privacy is almost non-existent because of the use of social media.

Telos Haunts Billboards, Colin Post Jun 2017

Telos Haunts Billboards, Colin Post

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This piece is an excerpt from an ongoing hypertext poem, akhilleus, which chronicles the activities of a network of characters interacting with the built world via text. This particular piece follows Telos, a seer of ends, as they appear before a billboard. Telos contemplates billboards as a kind of document, a succession of information planes along the roadway, echoing into and past each other, and also shares a premonition of the end of billboards.

The Art Of Radio Documentary, Geir Grenersen

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The two Sámi brothers Hans and Eilert Karlsen were the last remaining inhabitants of a vacated fishing hamlet on the arctic coast of Finnmark. In 1992, a Norwegian journalist made a radio documentary about the brothers. I recorded this documentary on my cassette player, and since the documentary is no longer available online, I have based my reflections on my old recordings. Both the recording technology and the brothers’ way of living is history now.

Paper Disc Record: A Consumption-Based Account Of Musical Identity, David Prescott-Steed Jun 2017

Paper Disc Record: A Consumption-Based Account Of Musical Identity, David Prescott-Steed

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Since 1991, I have been keeping a pen and paper list of my CD's, added to with each new purchase. With the increasing availability of digital media, not everything that I now listen to comes from a disc. Nevertheless, I have never bought digital music downloads, and so every new album purchase is a physical product with the band name and release title still added to the list. I keep it rolled up in a desk draw (the first composition-pages of which are yellowing nicely). The list comprises approximately 280 entries. Each entry until March 5, 2006 is numbered, by …
