Ethnography Of Dance Pedagogy Traditions: Chinese Dance Culture Compared To Eurocentric Dance Culture, Caitlin Shill, Marilyn Berrett
Ethnography Of Dance Pedagogy Traditions: Chinese Dance Culture Compared To Eurocentric Dance Culture, Caitlin Shill, Marilyn Berrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project’s purpose was to analyze the traditions, customs and philosophies of professors at the College of Dance at Beijing Mingzu University during Brigham Young University’s China dance study abroad. Recording and analyzing their pedagogical practices informed our own theories on the optimal balance between nurturing artistic development while preserving technical traditions. The globalization of the world’s dance community has revolutionized teaching philosophies. The international standard for dance pedagogy and technique for professional dancers continues to defy preceding theories as pedagogical practices are shared and incorporated into various training systems. China has consistently produced some of the world’s best technicians …

Journal of Undergraduate Research
My project proposal was to compose and perform a sacred work for choir, soloists, piano, and select instruments in the Classical music style using text concerning the coming of Christ to the Nephites in the Book of Mormon and written in English, Spanish, and German. I am happy to report that in the course of the last year, I have performed premiere performances of the work (One Fold, One Shepherd) in English and German.

“Sometimes You Have To Be A Little Bit Naughty”: Matilda The Musical Through A Feminist Lens, Kristin Perkins, Megan Sanborn Jones
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My research analyzed the popular musical Matilda to dissect and explicate underlying feminist ideologies. The grant went primarily to helping fund a trip to New York City where I was able to watch Matilda the Musical as well as helping to fund my trip to present my research at a conference in Chicago. This project has yielded two conference presentations thus far and I am continuing to work towards fulfilling my Honors Thesis requirement using this as my research topic.

Of Angles And Angels: Political Unity And Spiritual Identity In Anglo-Saxon England, 871 – 1016, Susannah Morrison, Miranda Wilcox
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project examined the development of English nationalism in the ninth and tenth centuries. Prior to this moment in the island’s history, England had been divided into a series of independent and self-governing kingdoms, including Mercia in the Midlands, Wessex in the West Country, Northumbria, stretching from the Humber River north into southeastern Scotland, and East Anglia in modern-day Norfolk and Suffolk. However, under the pressure of violent Viking expansion, these ancient kingdoms were largely dissolved. Only Wessex, under the leadership of the legendary Alfred the Great, survived essentially intact, and able to exert its cultural and political hegemony over …
A Makeup Artist’S Guide To Mastery The Standard Procedure, Michaela Fordham, Mary Farahnakian
A Makeup Artist’S Guide To Mastery The Standard Procedure, Michaela Fordham, Mary Farahnakian
Journal of Undergraduate Research
It is a rare opportunity to be able to study makeup design in a collegiate setting, especially one of Brigham Young University’s standard. Because I have the unique perspective of approaching makeup with an academic perspective, I wanted outside research to aid my personal career pursuit as well as explore the different jobs in the makeup industry. I wanted to find the common standards of procedures within different fields to compile a presentation for other makeup artists as well as inform others of Brigham Young University’s excellent program.

Research Brief: "Mental Health Of Transgender Veterans Of The Iraq And Afghanistan Conflicts Who Experienced Military Sexual Trauma", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This brief is about the relationship between identifying as a transgender veteran, military sexual trauma, and mental health disorders. In policy and practice, transgender veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma should discuss the trauma history with a mental health provider, and health care providers should work with transgender veterans to connect them with proper counseling services. The DoD should work to reduce gender identity stigma within the military and the VA should research MST treatment effectiveness among transgender veterans. Suggestions for future research include using self-rated identity as a variable and determining more about the effectiveness of MST treatments …

(Dis)Enchanted: (Re)Constructing Love And Creating Community In The, Shannon A. Suddeth
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines a queer fan community for the television show Once Upon a Time (OUAT) that utilizes the social networking site Tumblr as their primary base of fan activity. The Swan Queen fan community is comprised of individuals that collectively support and celebrate a non-canon romantic relationship between two of the female lead characters of the show rather than the canonic, heterocentric relationships that occur between the two women and their respective male love interests. I answer two research questions in this study: First, how are members of the Swan Queen fan community developing counter narratives of …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
First To Go Abroad" is a partnership between the Loyola Marymount University First To Go Program, LMU Study Abroad, and the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), which seeks to increase study abroad opportunities for first-generation college students. In May 2017, fifteen first-gen students and two first-gen faculty mentors traveled together to Santiago, Dominican Republic, where they spent ten days exploring the country and learning about the local cultures, customs, and histories of the people who call the DR home.
Travel is a privilege not all students have the same access to; for some students, this trip was the first …

"Subjects-Of-A-Life," Entelechy, And Intrinsic Teleology, Josephine Donovan
Between the Species
Abstract
This article explores the question of what is a “subject-of-a-life,” Tom Regan’s celebrated term for a living entity to whom, he argued, we humans owe ethical duty. I return to ancient concepts of entelechy and teleological organization, arguing that, stripped of theological implications, they provide a usable basis for modern theorizing about organism and an ethical foundation for condemning such practices as transgenic engineering. Every creature, it is argued, has its own inherited formal identity, which it strives to sustain. This reality is ethically pertinent knowledge which humans are obliged to respect and honor.

Contre L’Amour Courtois: Le Vrai Amour Chez Marie De France Et Chrétien De Troyes, Elizabeth Walley
Contre L’Amour Courtois: Le Vrai Amour Chez Marie De France Et Chrétien De Troyes, Elizabeth Walley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Marie de France and Chrétien de Troyes were two of the most influential French writers of the twelfth century. Both of these poets use different devices and themes of l’amour courtois, a model of how love was portrayed in literature at that time, to warn against the folie and the dangers to which adhering to the doctrines of this model could lead. They use narrative voice and commentary from characters to directly explain to readers why l’amour courtois is not an ideal example to follow, and they rely on the outcomes of their stories to portray potential outcomes for …

Women War Artists In The Canadian War Museum Collection, 1914-1945: Treasures From The Paper Vault, Stacey Barker
Canadian Military History
While most Canadian war art of the First and Second World War was produced by male artists, a handful of women artists were commissioned to capture their own impressions of these conflicts. This piece highlights eight works by four such artists: Caroline Armington, Alma Duncan, Bobs (Zema) Cogill Haworth, and Pegi Nicol MacLeod. All are works on paper and all are part of the Canadian War Museum’s Beaverbrook Collection of War Art.

Citizens United V The Federal Election Commission, Inverted Totalitarianism And Contemporary Fiction, Cory R. Chambers
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
In this paper I will explore the results of the 2010 Supreme Court Citizens United vs The Federal Election Commission as reflected in the contemporary literature. I will look at the role the corporation plays in American politics post Citizens United. My primary texts is the novel Super Sad True Love Story. My research question is: did the Citizens United decision open the door for ‘inverted totalitarianism’ to seep through the cracks of American society Using the allegorical novel Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart, I will show how Citizens United, the political theory of …

Kisses Sweeter Than Wine. Öyvind Fahlström And Billy Klüver: The Swedish Neo-Avant-Garde In New York, Per Bäckström
Artl@s Bulletin
The Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström moved to New York in 1961, where he meet the Swedish engineer Billy Klüver, and became part of the international neo-avant-garde movement. Fahlström’s performance, New York 1966, part of Klüver’s performance series 9 Evenings, is my point of departure for an analysis of the role of migration for the neo-avant-gardes in the 1960s. As intermediaries, Fahlström and Klüver brought new ideas both to New York and Stockholm, thus challenging the established view that American art was exported to the periphery. In reality, the New York art scene grew out of ideas and experiences arriving …
Artistic Emigration From Portugal To Paris In The First Half Of The 1960s: Six Portuguese Painters From Paris Revisited, Joana Baião
Artl@s Bulletin
This paper proposes to revisit some issues related to the impact of emigration on the paths followed by a group of six Portuguese painters who settled in Paris between 1958 and 1961. To do that, it will analyze and contextualize the evolution of their work in the first half of the 1960’s, and it will recall the small exhibition Seis Pintores Portugueses de Paris that opened in 1966 in Lisbon with the purpose of highlight the particularities of the artistic research that was being developed by those artists in Paris, integrating them into the international artistic movements of the period.

The Reception Of Modern European Art In Calcutta: A Complex Negotiation (1910s-1940s), Julia Madeleine Trouilloud
Artl@s Bulletin
This article analyzes the reception of Modern European Art in Calcutta in the early decades of the twentieth century. In the initial years, the knowledge of the European avant-gardes was limited. It then got rejected as a legitimate source of influence by the Bengal School ideologues close to the nationalist movement. In the early 1930s, the painter Jamini Roy paved the way for a new aesthetics which rejected the Bengal School ideological project and turned to folk arts as models. The style he pioneered naturally appealed to the global modern sensibility. The 1940s are marked by a phase of enthusiasm …
