A Phenomenological Approach To Clinical Empathy: Rethinking Empathy Within Its Intersubjective And Affective Contexts, Carter Hardy
A Phenomenological Approach To Clinical Empathy: Rethinking Empathy Within Its Intersubjective And Affective Contexts, Carter Hardy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation contributes to the philosophy of empathy and biomedical ethics by drawing on phenomenological approaches to empathy, intersubjectivity, and affectivity in order to contest the primacy of the intersubjective aspect of empathy at the cost of its affective aspect. Both aspects need to be explained in order for empathy to be accurately understood in philosophical works, as well as practically useful for patient care in biomedical ethics.
In the first chapter, I examine the current state of clinical empathy in medicine including professional opinions about empathy, the dominant definition being employed, and the problems that arise from this definition. …

It Just Doesn’T Add Up: Grammatical Number In Spanish And English, Amy S. Orf
It Just Doesn’T Add Up: Grammatical Number In Spanish And English, Amy S. Orf
Conference Presentations
This presentation examines the differences in grammatical number between Spanish and English, with respect to both the lexicon and agreement. These differences result in common errors by English-speaking students, such as yo pedí el camarón (“I ordered the shrimp”), tengo muchas ropas (“I have a lot of clothes”), mi postre favorito es las galletas (“my favorite dessert is cookies”), and me gustan cantar y bailar (“singing and dancing please me”). By highlighting the differences between Spanish and English, instructors can help their students avoid these pitfalls.

Catharine Mackinnon, Feminism, And Continental Philosophy: Comments On Toward A Feminist Theory Of The State—Twenty-Five Years Later, Natalie Nenadic
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Catharine MacKinnon’s feminist work on sexual abuse and violence has had a major impact on law and on policy in the United States and internationally. However, her complex theoretical writings, which are a foundation of that work, have yet to be adequately appreciated by philosophy, especially continental philosophy, that tradition with which she identifies her project. I explain her project in continental terms, especially Heidegger’s thought, so that we may better grasp the philosophical nature and significance of her work. In doing so, I also open paths by which those within the continental tradition may make it more relevant to …
Teaching Dystopia, Amy Wong
Teaching Dystopia, Amy Wong
English and Creative Writing | Faculty Scholarship
This year, those of us who work in college classrooms kicked off our semesters with the spectacle of Trump’s inauguration: its bluffed militarism, its dark vision, its citation, in effect, of Bane, from the Batman dystopia The Dark Knight Rises. Everything about the inauguration presaged the bitter, disputatious, spectacle-driven manias that have come to mark the 45th Presidency. It was clear, on that grey January day, that dystopia was newly in vogue as he intoned: Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities, rusted out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation. We all bleed …

They're Playing Our Song, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
2017 Summer Theatre
They're Playing Our Song is a musical with a book by Neil Simon, lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, and music by Marvin Hamlisch.
In a story based on the real-life relationship of Hamlisch and Sager, a wisecracking composer finds a new, offbeat lyricist, but initially the match is not one made in heaven. The two undergo a series of trials and overcome a number of hurdles before finding true love by the final curtain.
Empathie Narrative Et Changement Climatique Dans Musher (2014) De Julien Gravelle, Kathryn St. Ours
Empathie Narrative Et Changement Climatique Dans Musher (2014) De Julien Gravelle, Kathryn St. Ours
The Goose

Écrire Et Lire Le Caribou Au Lieu De L’Achever, Jonathan Hope
The Goose
Performing Narrative Medicine: Understanding Familial Chronic Illness Through Performance, Alyse Keller
Performing Narrative Medicine: Understanding Familial Chronic Illness Through Performance, Alyse Keller
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study presents the process of creating a performance ethnography of my family’s narratives about familial chronic illness and disability. I label this process performing narrative medicine. By documenting and granularly analyzing the process of my performance ethnography, the following chapters provide a step-by-step discussion of how families communicate about chronic illness/disability through storytelling and humor, and how/what performance does as a method, metaphor and object of study to further our current communicative practices and understandings of chronic illness and disability in families. I argue that performing narrative medicine is a heuristic for families living with chronic illness and …

1785 - The Public Land Survey System (Plss)
American Period Maps
Adopted by the United States Congress of Confederation on May 20, 1785, the Land Ordinance was established to provide a means by which the land west of the Appalachian Mountains, north of the Ohio River and East of the Mississippi River could be sold and settled. This article describes the Public Land Survey System (PLSS), a way of subdividing and describing all public domain lands in the United States. Regulated by the U.S. Department of the Interior, the PLSS divides the lands owned by the Federal government into 6-miles square townships and is included in the National Atlas. Townships are …

Latino Mothers’ Responsiveness And Bilingual Language Development In Young Children From 24 Months To 36 Months, Rica Ramirez
Latino Mothers’ Responsiveness And Bilingual Language Development In Young Children From 24 Months To 36 Months, Rica Ramirez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This longitudinal study examined the role maternal responsiveness had on shaping Spanish and English language development in bilingual two year-old children. Because children who are bilingual language learners are oftentimes coming from low socioeconomic families it is essential that we investigate the ways in which they develop language in order to better serve this population. Maternal responsiveness is one source in which we can examine early language development of young bilingual children. Eight Latino mother-child dyads were observed and assessed at three time points. Each observation was coded for maternal responsive behaviors. Regression and multilevel modeling was used in order …

Trade, Interaction And Change: Trace Elemental Characterization Of Maltese Neolithic To Middle Bronze Age Ceramics Using A Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer, Frederick S. Pirone
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The insular nature of the Maltese archipelago provides a unique opportunity to explore trade and cultural change from the Neolithic to the Bronze Ages in the central Mediterranean. I hypothesize that, during the period in which the Maltese islands were experiencing a form of isolation—owing either to their distance from Sicily and other populated regions, to the collective formation of an inwardly-focused culture, or to a combination of these factors—it is unlikely that pottery played a significant role as either an import or export in the archipelago’s exchange relationships with other communities in the central Mediterranean. I accordingly propose that …
Body As Text: Physiognomy On The Early English Stage, Curtis Le Van
Body As Text: Physiognomy On The Early English Stage, Curtis Le Van
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation explores the presence of physiognomy, which is the reading of faces and bodily affects to determine a person’s character. I investigate plays originally produced for the early English stage, ranging from the late Middle Ages to the Restoration. In this work I argue that the bodies within the selected plays exist as texts that are to be interpreted by readers and audience members alike. While embodiment theory has done excellent work in explaining the corporeality of the pre-modern body, it does not consider the body as a textual construction. My work aims to fill such a gap. My …

How Hard Is It To Drain A Swamp?, Allen C. Guelzo
How Hard Is It To Drain A Swamp?, Allen C. Guelzo
Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
Some humid, summer evening, go out and listen to the swamp. It chirps, it keens, it hoots, it chitters. It is both quiet and restless, serene and ominous. It is alive, full of bats’ wings, copperheads, and clouds of insects. Imagine how it will respond when it learns you plan to drain it.
That thought has some political parallels as Donald Trump finds himself at odds with the bureaucracy of the federal government in an effort to “drain the swamp” of the so-called Deep State. Thomas Jefferson did a good deal of swamp-draining after his victory over Federalist John Adams …
2009 - Ohlone/Costanoan Indians Of The San Francisco Peninsula And Their Neighbors, Yesterday And Today By Randall Milliken, Laurence H. Shoup, And Beverly R. Ortiz
Government Documents and Publications
This 2009 report studies the Ohlone/Costanoan people who are the descendants of speakers of six related Costanoan languages that were spoken in west central California, from San Francisco Bay to Monterey Bay, when Spanish missionaries and settlers arrived in the 1770s. The San Francisco Peninsula lands of the Golden Gate Recreation Area is in one of the six language territories, San Francisco Bay Costanoan. In this study, the prehistoric and contact-period culture of the San Francisco Bay Costanoans is described and their culture is compared to the cultures of surrounding language groups (other Costanoan language groups and non-Costanoan language groups …
