The very early career of Jordan Spieth offers considerable evidence of the significance of the mental aspect of the game. At The Open, the premier Grand Slam event, Jordon Spieth did battle on Sunday with himself, and won.

The Big World – Reha Erdem And The Magic Of Cinema, Andreas Treske

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Reha Erdem’s latest film Big Big World (Koca Dünya) was selected for the “Horizons” (“Orizzonti”) section at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival in 2016 and won a prestigious special jury award. The Venice selection is standing for a tendency to hold on, and celebrate the so-called “World Cinema” along with Hollywood blockbusters and new experimental arthouse films in a festival programming mix, insisting to stop for a moment in time a cinema that is already on the move.

Football And Colonialism : Body And Popular Culture In Urban Mozambique, Nuno Domingos Jul 2017

Football And Colonialism : Body And Popular Culture In Urban Mozambique, Nuno Domingos

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

In articles for the newspaper O Brado Africano in the mid-1950s, poet and journalist José Craveirinha described the ways in which the Mozambican football players in the suburbs of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) adapted the European sport to their own expressive ends. Through gesture, footwork, and patois, they used what Craveirinha termed “malice”—or cunning—to negotiate their places in the colonial state. “These manifestations demand a vast study,” Craveirinha wrote, “which would lead to a greater knowledge of the black man, of his problems, of his clashes with European civilization, in short, to a thorough treatise of useful and instructive ethnography.” …

A House Of Cards: Free Banking In Antebellum Chicago, Miles J. Holtzman Jul 2017

A House Of Cards: Free Banking In Antebellum Chicago, Miles J. Holtzman

Business and Economics Summer Fellows

The Chicago free banking market of the antebellum period has more than once aroused the interest of historians and economists alike. Implemented in the state of Illinois in 1851, free banking was a common, though not universal occurrence in the United States at the time. The city of Chicago’s experience with free banking was anything but common, however. Within the first 18 months after the Illinois legislature enacted the Illinois Free Banking Law, 9 free banks had begun operation in Chicago and between them had an aggregate note issue of over $800,000. But by 1860, Chicago was home to but …

A Not-So-Distant Mirror: Bringing The Revolution To Life Through Interpretation, Jonathan G. Danchik Jul 2017

A Not-So-Distant Mirror: Bringing The Revolution To Life Through Interpretation, Jonathan G. Danchik

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

I have not been able to escape Freeman Tilden’s grasp over the course of my three summers with the National Park Service. His writings and ideas seem to be everywhere, not out of pure coincidence, but because of the fact that nobody has eloquently and concisely gotten at the heart of what historical interpretation is quite like he has. In Interpreting Our Heritage, a book so ubiquitous that it might as well be hailed as the interpreter’s holy scripture, Tilden asserts that “the chief aim of interpretation is not instruction, but provocation.” This isn’t meaningless fluff; rather, it’s an important …

Historical Society Has Tools To Dig Deep, John M. Rudy Jul 2017

Historical Society Has Tools To Dig Deep, John M. Rudy

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

"On last Wednesday night, Lincoln's Birthday," the Star and Sentinel reported in 1908, "a colored lodge of Elks was instituted in Xavier Hall this place with 45 members." The Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World was originally formed as an African-American fraternal organization in the 1890s after a white elks lodge in Philadelphia denied local black men membership. By 1908, the organization was quickly working its way through Pennsylvania. And now Gettysburg had "Colored Elks," working as a social safety net for the black community of the Third Ward. They provided aid to the sick and the …

Gender As A Determining Factor In The Family History And Development Of The Mcgee Family, Thomas Daniel Knight Jul 2017

Gender As A Determining Factor In The Family History And Development Of The Mcgee Family, Thomas Daniel Knight

History Faculty Publications

This paper examines how gender shaped the family of Nancy Hood McGee, who belonged to one of Georgia’s antebellum planter families, across four generations. The McGee family had joined the planter class late in the antebellum period, and after the American Civil War they continued to be prosperous farmers in the former cotton belt. The essay proposes that women in the McGee family played a determining role in the family’s economic success during this time period. As such, it relates to scholarship on women in the nineteenth-century American South as well as to the role of women within southern families. …

A Randomized Trial Of Brief Assessment Interventions To Reduce Hiv/Sti Sexual Risk And Drug Use Among Young Adults Who Use Drugs In The Club Scene, Steven P. Kurtz, Mance E. Buttram, Maria Elizabeth Pagano, Hilary L Surratt Jul 2017

A Randomized Trial Of Brief Assessment Interventions To Reduce Hiv/Sti Sexual Risk And Drug Use Among Young Adults Who Use Drugs In The Club Scene, Steven P. Kurtz, Mance E. Buttram, Maria Elizabeth Pagano, Hilary L Surratt

CAHSS Faculty Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia

Extensive polydrug use puts nightclub attendees at high risk for health problems, including HIV/ STI; mental distress; and drug dependence.

There is pervasive resistance to participation in formal interventions. Club scene participants tend to be suspicious of or disinterested in drug use and sexual risk prevention messages delivered by governmental or health authorities.

Efficacious interventions to reduce sexual risk, drug use, and related consequences for this population are not apparent in the literature.
