This project examines how current copyright laws and digital distribution practices in music can be improved for both the creator and the consumer. The laws that govern our digital atmosphere, and thus a large portion of music distribution, are outdated and cause a wide variety of problems for both artists and fans. To create a comprehensive picture and establish the scope of this problem, I start by outlining the process a song goes through from when it is written to when it is in the hands, or rather ears, of listeners. The purpose of this study is to measure the linguistic benefits of learning a foreign language in a study abroad immersion program through Western Michigan University’s (WMU) Spanish department. The participants in this study were all participants of the Santander, Spain program of the Summer II semester of 2017. Nineteen students in total went to Spain and eleven of them agreed to participate in this study. During the Spring 2017 semester the eleven participants were given a pre-departure questionnaire and oral interview where they were asked demographic questions as well as program-specific information. From the time of the Indiana Jones movies, archaeology as a profession has had a mythical aura, but we recently had the chance to interview an excellent archaeologist who puts a human face on the profession. Her name is Anna Lucille Boozer, and she was raised in Williamsburg, Virginia. She has a bachelor’s in arts, in philosophy, and in the history of math and science from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, as well as two masters’ degrees in anthropology and a doctorate in that subject from Columbia University. Hospitality and health care are clearly connected, both etymologically and practically. Health care has traditionally been delivered in hospitals. Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac developed the concept and practice of Vincentian health care, demonstrating a preferential option for the poor. It is important that those who work in healthcare understand and remain committed to Vincentian and hospitality based health care, particularly for the indigent and marginalized. The need for Vincentian and hospitality-based health care remains relevant and necessary in contemporary society, as there remains health inequity, particularly for the poor.

One way that St. Vincent’s mission of compassion has expanded in modern times is through the work of Catholic Vincentian universities such as St. John’s University in Queens, New York. St. Vincent de Paul has become a “universal” figure, a polymorph or shape-shifter, if you will. As a classic figure, somewhat like Jesus in certain circles, he is represented in various guises: founder, saint, simultaneously traditional and modern, even a revolutionary. Just like Vincent de Paul, the somewhat universal figure, his sons have attempted to follow Christ the evangelizer of the poor. Some have been more successful than others. But I am proud to be among their number: rich or poor in virtue, rich or poor in commitment, rich or poor in initiative or inventiveness.

Few saints have been as active as Vincent de Paul (1581-1660). Even if we highlight only his principal accomplishments, the list is stunning. His spirituality was the driving force that enflamed his everyday activity. For Vincent de Paul, a single focus inspired everything: the person of Jesus. “Jesus Christ is the Rule of the Mission,”5 (Vincent DePaul, n.d.,12:110) he told his followers. The fans of British naval fiction, like C.S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower series or Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin series, are drawn into the well-researched and historically accurate depictions of the British professional navy of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. What they do not see is that from the mid-eighteenth century there were major naval reforms that converted a civilian led navy into a true military force that redefined the rules of combat. These changes created strict hierarchy and discipline on board the ships. Historian Sarah Kinkel argues that the reforms were hotly debated by the mercantile elite in the British …

This study examines the current demographic crisis in Japan, namely the lack of eligible adults in the workforce, a lack of relationships and marriages, and an aging population, which has led to a declining population. This study suggests that a possible solution to the crisis would be to include foreigners in the Japanese workforce through immigration and naturalization. This thesis first examines the historical relations that Japan has had with the West and its Asian neighbors and then places that within a cultural context. 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of Bowling Green State University’s Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. As a part of a Humanistic Research Methods course, we conducted archival research to explore a variety of research questions that were concerned with the 40 year evolution of the program. Our research question: How has the program worked toward raising awareness and advocating against power-based violence. We utilized poetic inquiry, collage work, and performance art to complete this project.

In this paper I discuss the effects of positive ambience within a writing center environment. Effective writing centers encourage student relaxation through positive tutor affect, soothing nature-based decor, and organization that promotes low power-distance. The use of open, friendly attitudes, warm colors, and breathing room allow writing center attendees to relax. As a result, attendees of this kind of writing center are more effective, engaged, and motivated to dig deep while pursuing the writing process. Much has changed since 1951, when Gian Carlo Menotti composed Amahl and the Night Visitors as the first opera ever written for television. Amahl and the Night Visitors is the story of a miracle that occurs when the Magi stop on their journey to see the Baby Jesus, and it has been a perennial favorite since its first live telecast more than 65 years ago. Despite its lasting popularity, some of the elements of this stunning work have not aged well. The monthly concert series, Listen in the Library, featured student performers in library spaces on the Logan campus. These short, pop-up concerts were one of the ways the USU Libraries was involved in USU’s “Year of the Arts” in 2017-2018. While the library regularly features students’ visual art and exhibits, Listen in the Library brought the performing arts into the space, making student accomplishments in music audible and visible to a community outside the concert hall.
