A Different Sort Of Park: Interpreting Pow Experiences At Andersonville National Historic Site, Andrew Knight Aug 2017

A Different Sort Of Park: Interpreting Pow Experiences At Andersonville National Historic Site, Andrew Knight

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Unlike many other historic sites, Andersonville does not fit neatly into any one box. It is not a battlefield, although we still interpret the experience of soldiers and the ideas they fought for. It is not a historic home or building; the only original parts of the site left are earthworks. Andersonville is a Civil War site but tells a story common to every war. Andersonville National Cemetery contains the remains of American soldiers from every American war except for 1812. Unlike any other National Cemetery entrusted to the National Park Service (except for Andrew Johnson National Historic Site) Andersonville …

Arts Advocate: Jeannette Edris Rockefeller And The Founding Of The Arkansas Arts Center, Kaye Marie Lundgren Aug 2017

Arts Advocate: Jeannette Edris Rockefeller And The Founding Of The Arkansas Arts Center, Kaye Marie Lundgren

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the dynamics behind the arts advocacy of Jeannette Edris Rockefeller of Seattle, Washington, who was the daughter and granddaughter of West-Coast capitalists and the spouse of an East-Coast philanthropist, Winthrop Rockefeller, to answer the question, “Did Jeannette Edris Rockefeller achieve the mantle of Art Advocate in her own right while participating in the Rockefeller family’s philanthropic mission of assisting America’s South?” Primary sources and contextual analysis show that Jeannette Rockefeller achieved the title of art advocate not only by virtue of her marriage to a member of the philanthropic Rockefeller family, but by virtue of her upbringing, …

Holocaust, Memory, Second-Generation, And Conflict Resolution, Leslie O'Donoghue Aug 2017

Holocaust, Memory, Second-Generation, And Conflict Resolution, Leslie O'Donoghue

Dissertations and Theses

Ten Jewish second-generation men and women from metro Portland, Oregon were interviewed regarding growing up in the aftermath of the Holocaust. The American-born participants ranged in age from fifty-one to sixty-four years of age at the time of the interviews. Though the parents were deceased at the time of this study the working definition of a Holocaust survivor parent included those individuals who had been refugees or interned in a ghetto, labor camp, concentration camp, or extermination camp as a direct result of the Nazi Regime in Europe from 1933 to 1945.

A descriptive phenomenological approach was utilized. Eight open-ended …

The Politics Of The “Ideal Home” In Colonial Korea, Jeongwon Yoon Aug 2017

The Politics Of The “Ideal Home” In Colonial Korea, Jeongwon Yoon

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the emergence and evolution of the concept of the “Ideal Home” in colonial Korea (1910–1945). In particular, I show that the newly appeared instruments including expositions, department stores and mass media enabled political power to disseminate the concept of the ideal home that homogenized people’s lifestyle. In the first chapter, I argue that the Home Exposition in 1915 was a political event that the state displayed a model of private spaces in public, and thereby attempting to induce people to behave productively in their home. In the second chapter, I demonstrate that department stores in the capital …

Innovation In Digital Music: A Customized Program For Barcelona Sae, Daniel E. Childs

Capstone Collection

Barcelona SAE is a third-party study abroad provider that facilitates study and intern abroad experiences for college-age students from around the world. One branch of Barcelona SAE is its Customized Programs Department, which offers over 45 customized programs to students studying everything from public health to the culinary arts to engineering. Harriet Jacobs And Toni Morrison: A Tradition Of Narrative Resistance, Allyson L. Molloy Aug 2017

Harriet Jacobs And Toni Morrison: A Tradition Of Narrative Resistance, Allyson L. Molloy

Theses and Dissertations

This article considers historical constructions of power and the narrative as a mode of resistance. Working in different centuries, under extremely disparate circumstances, Harriet Jacobs in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and Toni Morrison in her novel The Bluest Eye, utilize specific narrative strategies to challenge and question institutionalized power which is evidenced through their deliberate employment of narrative strategies not only to challenge the institution of slavery or the hegemonic ideal, but also to question the racial and gender oppression systemic to those institutions of power.

Even though users can choose what they do in virtual spaces, they are forced to operate within the confines of realms designed by the invisible authors of the game’s code. The illusion of choice blinds users to an assessment of the hidden structure supporting immersive virtual worlds.
