First paragraph:
In her review of Frederick Crews’s Freud: The Making of an Illusion Lisa Appignanesi argues that Freud’s talking cures, while not working miracles, were innocuous compared to the harm done under the regime of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual even now. While I share Lisa Appignanesi’s concern over the misapplication of diagnostic labels and the over-prescription of psychoactive drugs, it should be noted that the interpretive liberties taken by the psychoanalysts who ruled American psychiatry as late as the 1970’s had much to do with the rise of the DSM diagnostic system as we know …

What About Susan? Gender In Narnia, Emma G. Schilling
What About Susan? Gender In Narnia, Emma G. Schilling
Student Publications
Critics of C.S. Lewis argue that his misogyny is present in his portrayal of female characters. While Lewis himself was self-contradictory in his attitudes towards women, his depictions of female characters in The Chronicles of Narnia are both realistic and progressive. Both the male and female characters throughout the series demonstrate individual strengths and weaknesses that are not dependent on their gender. The criticism against Lewis focuses on his treatment of Susan, especially regarding her being the only child not to return to Narnia at the end of the series. Unlike what the critics argue, however, Susan is not excluded …

Manual, a journal about art and its making. Out of Line. The nineth issue. This issue of *Manual*—themed Out of Line—is a collection about the way that lines disrupt, point outward. In poetry, the attention to detail one takes in crafting a line is all about making the line disappear, making something it holds to take front stage. . . . The space between the lines creating the image . . . the space around that argues for the importance of all that the lines hold. Manual 9 (Out of Line) complemented Lines of Thought: Drawing from Michelangelo to Now, …

Beyond Pacifism: Teaching World War I Literature From Left To Right, Joyce Wexler
Beyond Pacifism: Teaching World War I Literature From Left To Right, Joyce Wexler
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The military historian Yuval Noah Harari accounts for the enduring allure of war by calling attention to a change in soldiers' memoirs that occurred in the mid-eighteenth century. Soldiers began to describe how they felt rather than what they did. Harari introduces the term flesh-witnessing to distinguish inner experience from eyewitness testimony. Flesh-witnesses speak of combat as a transformative and indescribable experience comparable to the sublime. This view is often attributed to militarists, but Harari shows that it also motivates pacifists. Even antiwar arguments like those of Erich Maria Remarque are based on the authority of the flesh-witness. To test …

Finding Sylvia: A Journey To Uncover The Woman Within Plath's Confessional Poetry, Emily Daly
Finding Sylvia: A Journey To Uncover The Woman Within Plath's Confessional Poetry, Emily Daly
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
"Finding Sylvia: A Journey to Uncover the Woman Within Plath's Confessional Poetry" focuses on investigating the relationship between Sylvia Plath's personal life and her confessional poetry. The paper explores and comments on how Plath's confessional and personal poetry both differ from and align with the writing in her letters, novel, and journals. It seeks to comment on how confessional poetry should be viewed by the reader, and how confessional poetry can be an expression of truth while also being a form of writing that heavily depends on creativity. It discusses the many theories surrounding readings of Plath, and argues that …
Teaching Marching Band In Urban Schools, Freamon Mcnair Iii
Teaching Marching Band In Urban Schools, Freamon Mcnair Iii
Masters Theses
The marching bands at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have entertained millions nationwide with precision, choreography, and musicianship. With the combination of precision-style marching and the African-American music culture, these bands have changed the perception of the football halftime performance. The music graduates of these marching band programs often follow the philosophy taught at their respective alma maters and impart it to their students. While most mainstream high school bands implement corps-style marching, urban high schools incorporate the style of the historically black schools. Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida, and Tennessee …
