C.S.S. Alabama: An Illustrated History
The Alabama claims were a diplomatic dispute between the United States and Great Britain that arose out of the U.S. Civil War. The peaceful resolution of these claims 7 years after the war ended set an important precedent for solving serious international disputes through arbitration, and laid the foundation for greatly improved relations between Britain and the United States.

C.S.S. Alabama: An Illustrated History
“The Alabama was built for speed rather than battle. Her lines were symmetrical and fine; her material of the best. In fifteen minutes her propeller could be hoisted, and she could go through every evolution under sail without any impediment. In less time her propeller could be lowered; with sails furled, and yards braced within two points of a headwind, she was a perfect steamer. Her speed, independent, was from ten to twelve knots; combined, and under favorable circumstances, she could make fifteen knots. When ready for sea she drew fifteen feet of water.”

C.S.S. Alabama: An Illustrated History
During June and July 2001, the American CSS Alabama Association and the French Association CSS Alabama carried out an archaeological investigation of the remains of the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama. Under the direction of Dr. Gordon P. Watts Jr., American and French archaeologists, French volunteer divers and French Navy personnel cooperated in an examination of the wreck that took place between 6 June and 4 July. Objectives for the investigation included video and 35mm photographic documentation of the wreck, limited test excavation in the officer’s quarters and recovery of selected artifacts exposed on the bottom surface. Unfortunately the most …

Part 4: Battle With Uss Kearsarge, Jack L. Dickinson
C.S.S. Alabama: An Illustrated History
“June 19: Lying off Cherbourg. Moderate breeze from the westward. At 10:20 am discovered the Alabama steaming out of the port of Cherbourg, accompanied by a French ironclad steamer and a fore-and-aft rigged steamer, showing the white English ensign. Beat to general quarters and cleared for action. Steamed ahead, standing offshore, being distant from land about 2 leagues; altered our course and approached the Alabama."

Spectacular Spaces Of Consumption, Ellen G. Watkins
Spectacular Spaces Of Consumption, Ellen G. Watkins
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
Abstract:
Many pre-professional dance studios have become consumer driven in response to the growing economic practice of neoliberalism. Neoliberal values have become more prominent in today’s economy and inevitably seeped into the lives of dancers and instructors, creating consumer based pre-professional training schools. This paper argues that the current neoliberal state of the United States is negatively affecting dance education by reducing specialized and therapeutic training and as a result numbing the creative mind and the artist’s entrepreneurial abilities. This research begins with the basic definition of neoliberalism and discusses how the theory of homo politicus and homo economicus individuals …
Mood And Mode: The Impressionistic Commonalities Of Claude Debussy And John Coltrane, Simon B. Needle, Edward Eanes
Mood And Mode: The Impressionistic Commonalities Of Claude Debussy And John Coltrane, Simon B. Needle, Edward Eanes
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
There are marked parallels in scale use, the use of modality and harmonic construction and movement in the music of John Coltrane as compared to impressionist composers like Claude Debussy. The modal harmonic exploration employed in the works of Coltrane is often attributed to the Indian raga and other music, but it can also be likened to Impressionist works by Debussy. A fascination with exoticism and a search for new veins in music to draw from propelled both of these artists forward musically. While Debussy learned medieval modality from the Russians, Coltrane looked further East to the Arab world and …

The Influence Of Chimú Metalworks On Inca Metalworks, Maria Shah, Hannah Pelfrey, Jessica J. Stephenson
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
One of the cornerstones of art history is the attribution of art work to an artist, culture or time period. Art historians perform this work through a number of methods, including an analysis of medium, provenance, and object history, with the goal of placing a work within a chronological sequence. However, art historical attribution becomes a challenge when studying lesser known cultures or cultures of the past whose art works have been removed from archaeological contexts without rigorous study. As a result, attributions and classifications are sometimes based on minimal information. Once published this information is often uncritically perpetuated. One …
Political Animal: Florence Brown Cotnam And The Arkansas Women's Suffrage Movement, Jared Barton Craig
Political Animal: Florence Brown Cotnam And The Arkansas Women's Suffrage Movement, Jared Barton Craig
Theses and Dissertations
Florence Brown Cotnam was a suffragist, war worker, clubwoman, one-time congressional candidate, and an active member of the Democratic Party. She entered the Women’s Suffrage Movement when nothing got done, especially in the American South that opposed equal suffrage on racial and social grounds. The Arkansas General Assembly stalled legislation. Equally daunting were the anti-suffrage arguments were rampant, both in government corridors and in communities across the state. Cotnam was uniquely suited to change that. She remade the perception of a suffragist through a robust publicity campaign, linked the movement to World War I, made suffrage a patriotic issue, countered …
Caitlin Keogh: Feminine Feminism, Madeline Beck
Caitlin Keogh: Feminine Feminism, Madeline Beck
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
The painter Caitlin Keogh (b. 1982) is a rising star in the Contemporary Art scene in the United States. Currently living and working in Brooklyn, New York, Keogh is one of countless emerging painters in the trendy arts hub, but her work is already receiving international attention and critical acclaim. Her refined use of flat figuration and bold but pastel colors combined with her striking subject matter has situated Keogh distinctly in the massive contemporary art scene today. Keogh’s insertion of feminist discourse, personal identity, and appropriated imagery into her paintings begs a thorough analysis of her work. She implements …
The Danger Of Unqualified Dance Instruction In Private Dance Studios And Social Media, Angelina M. Pellini
The Danger Of Unqualified Dance Instruction In Private Dance Studios And Social Media, Angelina M. Pellini
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
While dance classes have become a popular activity for children in the United States, most people are unaware of what constitutes “quality” dance instruction. This idea has been addressed at a collegiate level yet the lack of standards for dance instruction at the studio level has been overlooked. This research draws attention to this issue and the need for a potential solution to the problem. The project strives to answer these questions: Is there a trend between the lack of standards for dance education and the prevalence of injuries in young dancers? If so, is there a way to address …
