Was T. S. Eliot's "Tantalus Jar" Actually A Leyden Jar?, Eric A. Schiff

Physics - All Scholarship

T. S. Eliot wrote the introduction to the volume of Ezra Pound’s Selected Poems that was published in 1928. In an important and oft-cited passage, he used the term “tantalus jar”. In the present paper, we show that this term was a coinage. It likely refers to the Leyden jar, which was an early device invented in the 1700s for storing electrical charge. Eliot may have become acquainted with it through The Golden Bough (1912), which he refers to in later work. We speculate as to whether Eliot’s coinage was intentional or not.

Examines a possible source of the imagery associated with Tolkien’s representations of divine and queenly women in Alain de Lille’s De Planctu Naturæ, or Complaint of Nature. De Lille was a 12^th century theologian and poet associated with the Chartres school, and an influence on Chaucer.

These are among the topics authors address in this wide-ranging account of how Jews have conceptualized the world to come and structured their lives in this world accordingly. Some authorities portrayed the afterlife as an endless round of feasting and drinking of chazerie that would put the fanciest Las Vegas buffets to shame. Through the generous sponsorship of Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Mythlore and the Mythopoeic Society now have an official online home for back issues of the journal, The Mythlore Index Plus, and, eventually, other publications and society archives.

The landscape, in a piece of mythopoeic fiction, is more than a backdrop to the action- It is the story itself rendered static. The way each author arranges their landscape thus reflects their conception of continuities, discontinuities, and imbalances of power and reality between the mundane and the fantastic. I argue that by applying the postcolonial theories of Mary Louise Pratt, Michel de Certeau, and Homi Bhaba to the fantastic landscapes that are mapped or left unmapped by Diana Wynne Jones in Hexwood and Garth Nix in his Old Kingdom Series, it is revealed that the ideological divide between the …
