"Empire" is the keyword that frames both the field of Latina/o studies and what Latina/o studies projects interrogate in order to make visible how empire's scattered remains throughout the Americas cross national borders as well as affective states of being. In so doing, Latina/o studies' methodological recourse to and critique of empire seeks to apprehend empire's legacies beyond the singular historical actor model of the exceptional nation-state in order to engage how empire saturates and conditions affects across space, time, and bodies.

This article calls attention to the recent appearance of Don Quixote in the "real world" of economics, business management, and leadership development as a new, but mostly unnoticed chapter in the reading history of Cervantes's work. Providing an overview of this relatively new phenomenon, the article focuses on the pervasive influence of an unlikely defender of the "romantic approach": Stanford Graduate School of Business professor James March, an acclaimed intellectual and founding member of the revolutionary School of Behavioral Economics, whose original use of Don Quixote in leadership studies was ironically meant to provide a humanist antidote to the spread …

Crooked Data: (Mis)Information In Contemporary Art, N. Elizabeth Schlatter

The University of Richmond Museums exhibited Crooked Data: (Mis)Information in Contemporary Art on February 9 through May 5, 2017, in the Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art. The exhibition features art by twenty-one contemporary artists and studios who work with data in nontraditional ways. Some artists incorporate data from known sources, using it as an aesthetic device divorced from its originally intended interpretive function. Others gather and manifest data that might normally be considered not worthy of collecting. And some of the works explore alternatives to standard data visualization forms and practices.

The prospects of travel, trade, and religious pilgrimage in the Levant fascinated generations of Russia’s men and women from the twelfth to the early twentieth centuries. In particular, the storied sacred sites of Jerusalem attracted the curiosity of myriad Russian travelers: monks and priests, merchants and diplomats, writers and artists, scholars and tourists. Dmitrii V. Dashkov (1784-1839) etched his name in the annals of these visitors with a brief sojourn in Ottoman Palestine in 1820, and his travelogue, rendered here in English, merits attention as a document that offers eyewitness testimony, firsthand observation, and telling detail. Pilgrimage, Connection, Community: In Honor Of Theofanis G. Stavrou, Theophilus C. Prousis

I first presented these comments at the 44th Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (New Orleans, November 2012), as part of a roundtable discussion that honored Theofanis G. Stavrou’s fifty years of service to Mediterranean, Slavic, and Eastern Orthodox Studies. With a few alterations and updates, these words stand as an appropriate conclusion to this volume of essays exploring the main topical interests—Eastern Orthodox Church history, Modern Greek literature, Russian history and culture, the history of Cyprus, and several other areas—in the truly outstanding scholarly career of Theo Stavrou.
