Searching For The Divine: An Autoethnographic Account Of Religious/Spiritual And Academic Influences On The Journey To Professor, E. James Baesler Jan 2017

Searching For The Divine: An Autoethnographic Account Of Religious/Spiritual And Academic Influences On The Journey To Professor, E. James Baesler

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

This autoethnographic account chronicles my academic and religious/spiritual path to becoming a professor of Communication. Spiritual influences and significant life events related to prayer, education, teaching, and research serve as sign posts marking the way. The journey begins with a child scientist experimenting with life—and an adolescent discovering the joy of reading through an illness. The journey continues with a crisis in undergraduate years followed by indoctrination stories of graduate school. Securing and retaining an academic position in Communication reveals the complexities of negotiating research and teaching in higher education. After tenure and promotion, a concurrent spiritual awakening begins a …

Embodied Composition: The Creation Of Enriched Interactional Experiences Through Music Composition, Aaron Bilney Geringer Jan 2017

Embodied Composition: The Creation Of Enriched Interactional Experiences Through Music Composition, Aaron Bilney Geringer

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Music is a form of embodied interaction through which people can synchronize their motor, sensory, and emotive systems. Anthropologists and developmental psychologists suggest that elements of music provide the groundwork for verbal interaction and interpersonal relationships (Aiello, 1996; Dissanayake, 2000; Mithen, 2006). When people interact with each other through music, the bases of community are formed. Phenomenological descriptions of individual’s experience of music and the role music plays in interpersonal interaction have been documented. However, there is little literature describing the embodied experiences of music composers as the architects of embodied interactions through music. Through this study, I address this …

More Than Skin Deep: An Analysis Of Black Women's Experiences With Race, Skin Tone, And Cosmetics, Anne Yung Van Jan 2017

More Than Skin Deep: An Analysis Of Black Women's Experiences With Race, Skin Tone, And Cosmetics, Anne Yung Van

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In June 2016, the cosmetic company, ColourPop, released a new line of contour-intended sculpting sticks with insensitive names, such as “Yikes,” “Typo,” and “Dume,” for their three darkest shades. ColourPop’s lack of regard to their African American consumers serves as a reminder that the cosmetic industry often fails to include and fully embrace Black women. It is important to explore the relationship between the cosmetic industry and Black women because reoccurring negative experiences may be indicative of systemic oppression – illustrating that Black women’s personal experiences reach a political sphere. Furthermore, the parallels between history and contemporary experiences provide proof …

History Of Desegregation In West Virginia - Timeline 1, Ashley Porter Jan 2017

History Of Desegregation In West Virginia - Timeline 1, Ashley Porter

West Virginia Connection

The lesson plan in this correlates to the book Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. This plan shows the history of the desegregation in the state of West Virginia and provides facts about what happened during that time. This will give you the ability to give a brief history to fully understand the hardship for African Americans, and also to show students how the education system has changed overtime. This history lesson connects with Hidden Figures because there is a direct connection to the educational system to the real-life people Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughan. Both had attended schools in …

Medieval Ingenuity In Fourteenth Century English Milling In Middlesex, Norfolk, And Northumberland Counties, Brett Pelham Jan 2017

Medieval Ingenuity In Fourteenth Century English Milling In Middlesex, Norfolk, And Northumberland Counties, Brett Pelham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the effect of population losses from outbreaks of the Bubonic Plague on capital investment for labor saving technology in England. The cities in Middlesex and Norfolk advance the economy in their surrounding areas. Northumberland's access to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne did not house as much wealth for Coquetdale and Glendale. However, Edward I's constant investment in the recently acquired Scottish territory provided the area with income from the crown. While the decrease in population was catastrophic and presented social turmoil, the surviving population continued to make economic adjustments. The economic adaptations provided relief to a strained population. Trade should have …

Creating A Digital Exhibit On The Colonial Fur Trade In Florida: A Public History / Digital History Project, Benjamin Dibiase

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis project incorporates podcasts and high resolution digital imagery visualizations into a single online exhibit to democratize archival material on the web. It employs contemporary new museology and digital history methodological frameworks, and utilizes the burgeoning medium of podcasting to increase public understanding and interaction with an historical period. For this project I have partnered with the Florida Historical Society and have utilized original materials from their collection relating to the colonial fur trade in Florida. The study of the North American fur trade has recently expanded to include more information about the indigenous societies engaged in the trade …

A Place in the Sunshine State, is a thesis project focused on the Parliament House Motor Inn in Orlando, Florida. This project nominated the Parliament House Motor Inn for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. This nomination was completed using both oral histories and more traditional historical source material. The Parliament House Motor Inn was evaluated using National Register Bulletins and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Preservation. This nomination was presented to give voice to a long-underrepresented community within the national narrative of the United States, along with giving the Parliament House the recognition it deserves …

Beyond Panels Interactive Storytelling: Developing A Framework For Highly Emotive Narrative Experiences On Mobile Devices, Michael Joseph Eakins Jan 2017

Beyond Panels Interactive Storytelling: Developing A Framework For Highly Emotive Narrative Experiences On Mobile Devices, Michael Joseph Eakins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Balancing passive and interactive experiences within a narrative experience is an area of research that has broad applicability to the video game, cinematic, and comic book industries. Each of these media formats has attempted various experiments in interactive experience. The goal of this research was to better understand how to construct an interactive narrative experience that preserves the integrity of the author's story, but allows for inspired interaction by a willing audience. A study was designed to test three different conditions. The two control conditions were examples of passive narrative storytelling: the Comic Book Condition and the Cinematic Condition. The …

Finding Signatures Of Linguistic Reasoning, Jill De Villiers Jan 2017

Finding Signatures Of Linguistic Reasoning, Jill De Villiers

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Hinzen lays out the platform of un-Cartesian linguistics, and the ramifications threaten widespread beliefs about the relations between language and thought. The theoretical story is compelling but my commentary will address my con- cerns as a laborer in research.

Why Roma Children Need Testing In Romani, Hristo Kyuchukov, Jill De Villiers, Andrea Takahesu Tabori Jan 2017

Why Roma Children Need Testing In Romani, Hristo Kyuchukov, Jill De Villiers, Andrea Takahesu Tabori

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

In this paper we make one major point: that Roma children in Europe need to be tested in their mother tongue before school placement. Roma children are in a particularly perilous position with respect to their education. We describe the problematic linguistic situation of Roma children, who are bilingual and often bidialectal, but are frequently evaluated in the language of the state for educational placement, a process that has been shown to significantly compromise their chance of success. We then review the considerable empirical evidence that bilingual children must be evaluated in both languages to give a fair assessment of …

Mission: Agnes C. L. Donohugh, Early "Apostle For Ethnography", Benjamin L. Hartley

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

In the spring of 1915, the Kennedy School of Missions at Hartford Theological Seminary, the leading graduate school for missionary training in the United States at this time, offered the first graduate-level course on ethnology ever to be taught in America to missionary candidates.1 The seminary's leadership had identified the need for teaching ethnology to missionariesin- training as early as 1913 - when the school of missions was just two years old. 2 This American curricular innovation followed a practice begun a decade earlier in Britain of teaching ethnology to missionary candidates (Kuklick 1991).3 Hartford Seminary President W. Douglas Mackenzie …

Film And Christian Preaching: Toward A Cinemate Homiletic (Part I), Sunggu Yang Jan 2017

Film And Christian Preaching: Toward A Cinemate Homiletic (Part I), Sunggu Yang

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

didn’t want you to enjoy the film. I wanted you to look very closely at your own soul

Sam Peckinpah (Director)

The cinema or pop film[2] has now become “the cathedral of the [twenty-first] century.”[3] Among its many implications, this metaphor keenly denotes that the film now provides its viewers with theological or spiritual meanings and issues that vitally affect their everyday (religious) thinking, behaviors and life patterns. Doubtless, this spiritual or religious function of the film used to be the church’s unique spiritual responsibility or task in the Christian West. Now, the film does it in place of the …

King, Kingship, Sunggu Yang Jan 2017

King, Kingship, Sunggu Yang

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Biblical films make use of several different images and related perceptions of kingship that are found throughout both Testaments: 1) king as absolute tyrant, 2) king as disapproved servant of God, 3) king as ideal head of the nation, 4) king as ironically subversive clown, and 5) God (or Christ) as ultimate king of kings in the universe. Films have been quick to adopt and depict these five images following biblical accounts and through creative imagination.

First and foremost, the concept of a king as an absolute tyrant is the earliest overture image of king in the OT/HB, particularly in …

Lamentation Of Jesus, Sunggu Yang Jan 2017

Lamentation Of Jesus, Sunggu Yang

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The lamentation of Jesus is one of the important biblical-artistic themes around Jesus’ death and resurrection since the Middle Ages – including themes such as the crucifixion, deposition, pietà, anointing, and entombment (see above “I. Christianity, Literature, and Music” and “II. Visual Arts”). This artistic scene is not genuinely consistent with the biblical narrative since no single canonic gospel of the four recounts any particular scene of lamentation. The Gospels only tersely report that at the cross there were few people from his inner circle and other female followers who witnessed the crucifixion from a distance (Matt 27 : 55–56; …

Foreword To The Itinerary Of The Prophet-King, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2017

Foreword To The Itinerary Of The Prophet-King, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Among modern analyses of the origin and development of John’s Christology, the socio-religious analysis of Wayne A. Meeks advances one of the most compelling and suggestive theses in recent years, addressing the riddles pertaining to the puzzling presentation of Jesus as a prophet-king like Moses in John 6:14-15. Whereas the Logos motif of the Johannine Prologue and the Father-Son relationship in the Johannine narrative convey high-christological thrusts, his receptions as a rabbi, teacher, and prophet elsewhere in John’s story of Jesus are far more mundane and earth bound. While he is rejected in Judea for failing to live up to …

Peder Borgen’S Bread From Heaven—Midrashic Developments In John 6 As A Case Study In John’S Unity And Disunity (A Foreword To Bread From Heaven), Paul N. Anderson Jan 2017

Peder Borgen’S Bread From Heaven—Midrashic Developments In John 6 As A Case Study In John’S Unity And Disunity (A Foreword To Bread From Heaven), Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Among the weighty treatments of the Gospel of John over the last half-century, one of the most incisive has been Bread from Heaven, by Peder Borgen. As the unity and disunity of the Fourth Gospel had been debated extensively among Johannine scholars for the previous half-century, approaching this issue from a text-based comparative standpoint posed a new window through which one could assess key issues and contribute to the larger discussions. Whereas Rudolf Bultmann and Wilhelm Bousset had envisioned the context of John’s composition as Hellenistic Christianity leading into Gnostic trajectories, Borgen focused on particularly Jewish writings as John’s primary …

"Get On The Cart!" Wesleyan Discipleship In An Age Of Endemic (Chapter 15 Of Thinking Theologically About Mass Incarceration), Benjamin Hartley, Glen Alton Messer Ii, Kirsten Sonkyo Oh

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Fyodor Dostoyevsky once said that the so,ul of society "can be measured by its prisons."1 If that is true, then the soul of society in the United States is sick. The statistics on mass incarceration provided elsewhere in this volume illustrate the endemic nature of the problem much like epidemiological data shows the occurrence of a disease, but the stories from prisoners and their families-which the three of us have heard and told-show even more poignantly the depth of the wounds caused by the tragedy of incarceration that defies Christian virtues in this country. We pray this chapter will …

Foreign Film Localization: Japanese Film For American Audiences, Shannon Gerow Jan 2017

Foreign Film Localization: Japanese Film For American Audiences, Shannon Gerow

Whittier Scholars Program

This study looks at the effects of international marketing on movies and the localizing of films to appeal to the audience of specific cultures. The ‘bending’ of cultures aspects in film for the sake of clarity, appeal, or artistic liberty (particularly in translation) is what I analyzed in this paper. This paper will include the ways in which foreign aspects are rationalized and I will look at two specific cases. These cases include the two Japanese films, "Howls Moving Castle” and “A Letter to Momo". These movies are looked at in terms of their distinctly Japanese characteristics which are present …

Let’S Get Serious: Deconstructing The Buzzfeed Video, Kiara Downs Jan 2017

Let’S Get Serious: Deconstructing The Buzzfeed Video, Kiara Downs

Whittier Scholars Program

My research looks at the ways these videos are made and the formula behind them. I seek to understand two aspects of the making of a serious Buzzfeed video: the technical elements that drive it’s narrative and the way it responds to the world. These two elements are the most interesting as they cement the difference between fun videos and the serious. My project will compile the BuzzFeed videos of a serious nature released over the 2016 paper. For the purposes of this project I will only be drawing videos from the BuzzFeed video flagship channel and the BuzzFeed Yellow …

The Lost Purpose Of Learning (Chapter 1 Of On Education, Formation, Citizenship And The Lost Purpose Of Learning), Joseph Clair

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "College is a rich part of the Western cultural imagination and a canonized plot line in the American middle-class mythos. Although it is costly and time-intensive, there are good reasons to be proud of this tradition and to go away for four years to become adults. After all, college leaves an indelible stamp on the soul: the formative lessons of newfound independence, hard work, and leisure in preparation for the business of life. Few institutions have more nostalgic and patriotic bonds of affection that last as long-and procure as many donations- as college and university alumni associations. Americans talk …

The Formative Spirituality Of John Punshon (1935-2017), Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

John Punshon has been one of the premier Quaker historians and spokespersons over the last four decades. Serving as Quaker Tutor at Woodbrooke, Visiting Professor of Quaker Studies at George Fox University, and the first Geraldine Leatherock Chair of Quaker Studies at the Earlharn School of Religion, John Punshon has contributed greatly to present historical and theological understandings of the Quaker movement, and he will be greatly missed. From his childhood experiences in a local church whilst living with his grandparents during the War to his education at Oxford, his public and political service and his development into a leading …
