Genre And Register Variation: Academic Conference Presentations In Spanish In The United States, Carolina Viera
Genre And Register Variation: Academic Conference Presentations In Spanish In The United States, Carolina Viera
World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations
Conference presentations (CPs) are instrumental in the academic sphere, since they provide a space in which academics disseminate their ongoing research, interact with their colleagues, and position themselves in their professional community (Swales 2004; Ventola, Shalom & Thompson 2002; Rowley-Jolivet & Carter-Thomas 2005). Unique to the academic community of Hispanic studies in the United States is the fact that texts can be produced either in English or Spanish, therefore, both languages are promoted as a viable means of academic communication. Additionally, scholars who deliver presentations in Spanish in the United States speak a wide array of Spanish dialects, come from …

Erich Przywara On John Henry Newman And The Supernatural, Kevin M. Vander Schel
Erich Przywara On John Henry Newman And The Supernatural, Kevin M. Vander Schel
Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship
This essay inquires into the unique intersection of Erich Przywara and John Henry Newman and explores the re-imagined notions of divine transcendence and the supernatural in their works. Przywara found in Newman a source of inspiration for a more lively presentation of Catholic thought and a model for illuminating the path toward a new Catholic intellectual culture. Newman’s work highlights the actively inquiring disposition of faith, an active search for the meaning of its doctrines, a progressive and unceasing journey that comprises the entirety of one’s life. By showing the changing Catholic responses to modernity and the evolving theological approaches …

"The Pentecostal Evangelical Church: The Theological Self-Identity Of The Assemblies Of God As Evangelical 'Plus'", Daniel D. Isgrigg
College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship
Are Pentecostals simply evangelicals who have had the Pentecostal experience? In recent years, this topic has found its way into the conversation about Pentecostal theology, especially on the academic level. As Pentecostal scholarship matures, many scholars are interested in not only doing theology as Pentecostals, but they are also working toward building a Pentecostal theology reflective of the movement’s true theological identity rather than simply evangelical or Fundamentalist theology plus a doctrine of the Spirit. This article will survey Assemblies of God periodical literature of the first decade and a half (1914-1927) to reveal the degree to which evangelical identity …
Walking Code, Conor Mcgarrigle
Walking Code, Conor Mcgarrigle
Articles
This paper describes an early stage research project that seeks to apply Situationist concepts of psychogeography to urban walking as artistic and activist practice. The project seeks to ultimately create a syntax that can be used to describe and codify the subjective spatial practice of walking in the city. This process is a conceptual and discursive exercise to generate new knowledge about urban space as embodied data space that seeks to create a practical open framework that can be deployed to algorithmically generate walking experiences tailored toward specific desires and activities.
This will be achieved through the development of algorithmic …
Sexuality In The Time Of War, Or, How Rape Became A Crime Against Humanity, Sharon Sliwinski
Sexuality In The Time Of War, Or, How Rape Became A Crime Against Humanity, Sharon Sliwinski
Data and Test Instruments
Working closely with women's testimonies from the genocides in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, this chapter aims to widen space in contemporary human rights discourse for discussion about sexuality--and in particular about the ways sexual violence functions as one of the forces of sovereign power. There is an intimate and largely non-visible strategy that sovereign power has at its disposal to cleave a subject from their capacity to live a human life, namely, by attacking the individual’s sense of sovereignty over her own body.
Things To Do With Your Imaginary Child, Steven Bruhm
Things To Do With Your Imaginary Child, Steven Bruhm
Data and Test Instruments
This essay considers texts in which adults consciously invent children whom they represent to the world as “real,” children who can then richly investigate the ethical limits that their inventors may test in other people. Drawing on clinical psychological theories of children’s imaginary playmates – and the health that psychologists ascribe to the juvenile practice of inventing imaginary children – I consider what the adult invention of the child might suggest for the “uses” of children more generally. Texts under consideration are Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Lorrie Moore’s Anagrams, and Armistead Maupin’s quasi-biographical The Night Listener.
How London, Ontario, Celebrated The Birth Of Confederation From 1867 Through 1907, Marvin L. Simner
How London, Ontario, Celebrated The Birth Of Confederation From 1867 Through 1907, Marvin L. Simner
Psychology Publications
During the months that preceded the Proclamation many articles appeared in both the Free Press and the London Daily Advertiser in anticipation of this event. Whereas both papers were strongly in favor of the Proclamation, the announcement itself set the stage for considerable and often prolonged debate within the city. This article will review the nature of that debate. The Prelude will focus on the newspaper coverage before and after June 6, 1867, to reveal how informed the citizens of London were about the significance of the Proclamation. The Aftermath will review the many political decisions along with the preparations …

Wisdom, Chapter 1 Of The Science Of Virtue: Why Positive Psychology Matters To The Church, Mark R. Mcminn
Wisdom, Chapter 1 Of The Science Of Virtue: Why Positive Psychology Matters To The Church, Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
The day before I started this chapter I played flag football with some of my doctoral students. Though I am thirty years their senior, I tried my best to keep up for three hours of great fun. Today my sore muscles scream any time I try to move. My wife, Lisa, would say they are reprimanding me for my foolishness. Typing on the keyboard is about the only motion that doesn’t hurt. It seems both fitting and paradoxical to begin writing about wisdom the morning after punishing my body in the name of a good time. Hopefully I haven’t just …

Forgiveness, Chapter 2 Of The Science Of Virtue: Why Positive Psychology Matters To The Church, Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Forgiveness is close to the center of everything Christian. It shows up in the heart of the Lord’s Prayer, which is in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, which is the centerpiece of how we understand Jesus and his astonishing critical wisdom. “Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us” (Matt. 6:12).
