Racialized Slacktivism: Social Media Performances Of White Antiracism, Tim Engles
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
This chapter is an analysis of common white netizens' responses to the killing of Trayvon Martin and to the viral video, "Kony 2012." It argues that such responses are a form of "racialized slacktivism," that is, an effort to return to a sense of oneself as a good, happy white person by going through the motions of demonstrating an antiracist online version of oneself.

Pattern Project - Transportation I & Ii, Grace Ditthardt
Pattern Project - Transportation I & Ii, Grace Ditthardt
Pattern Project
The Pattern Project explores the process of developing visual patterns, intended for the built interior environment, through both hand and digital crafts. Inspirations evolve into pattern concepts that inform message and intention. The intended message then informs motif, color, density, composition, line, repetition, hierarchy, and texture. Drawing from history, designers assess the role of pattern within the built environment and its connection to architecture and building occupants. Traditional handcrafts have evolved and are now used in contemporary processes while new digital crafts have emerged as pattern-making tools. The patterns developed through the Pattern Project were produced to scale on paper …

(First Paragraph) If designers have a central precept, it's that their activity creates economic value for commercial interests, which practitioners regard as their predominant purpose. Within design, even among students, this pecuniary capacity is considered self-evident. But the eternal lament among design professionals is that business isn't grasping this certainty, or only does so erratically. Design is largely regarded by the outside world as a frivolous afterthought.
Raciocultural Union And "Fraternity Of Feeling": Ishmael's Redemption In Moby-Dick, Emily Butler-Probst
Raciocultural Union And "Fraternity Of Feeling": Ishmael's Redemption In Moby-Dick, Emily Butler-Probst
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
The process of redemption, or the complete transformation of an individual’s life that enables him to avoid personal destruction is precisely what Ishmael experiences as he embraces cultural pluralism over the course of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. Ishmael first begins Moby-Dick as a character who embraces isolation and abstract pondering in a manner that is similar to the obsessive, isolated madness of Captain Ahab. He is saved from the “madness” of absolutism by Queequeg, a South Pacific harpooner, in a process which not only expresses the nineteenth-century perception that cultural Others were less afflicted by madness, but also invokes a message …
The Space In-Between: Exploring Liminality In Jane Eyre, Megan Clark
The Space In-Between: Exploring Liminality In Jane Eyre, Megan Clark
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
From Mrs. Reed’s house to Morton, Jane Eyre is always singled out as otherworldly. Throughout Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë creates different spheres and worlds through the means of social class, and the way people are thought of and treated. These worlds are presented in pairs and as a juxtaposition of each other, but Jane never belongs to either world. She remains in her own realm, always separated from the others. Throughout the text, she is compared to an elf or fairy, emphasizing the otherworldliness that defines her. While some look at Jane as a social outcast due exclusively to …
“Blame The Due Of Blame”: The Ethics And Efficacy Of Curses In Richard Iii, Alexandra Malouf
“Blame The Due Of Blame”: The Ethics And Efficacy Of Curses In Richard Iii, Alexandra Malouf
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
Language, particularly the language of cursing, plays a powerful role in determining the outcome of events in Shakespeare’s Richard III. Gender imperatives reflected in the speech of Richard III’s characters indicate where power lies and how it is exercised across gendered spheres. While male characters in the history plays typically obtain and exert power through violence, both in war and in secret, the primary source of power held by female characters in Richard III is their use of language. Consistently, the women seal the violent ends of their enemies with curses, and Richard is perpetually given cause to …

Quaker Religious Thought
Excerpt: "John Punshon has been one of the premier Quaker historians and spokespersons over the last four decades. With a quick wit and a twinkle in his eye, John inspired thousands with his teaching and ministries in Britain, America, and worldwide. John passed away on March 10th after a second battle with myeloma. He is survived by his wife Veronica, their children—Tom Punshon and Sophie Miller—and their grandchildren, Victoria and James Punshon and Tabitha and Esther Miller."
Review Of Early Quakers And Their Theological Thought, Leah Payne
Review Of Early Quakers And Their Theological Thought, Leah Payne
Quaker Religious Thought
First-generation Quakers were a radical and persecuted sect of early modern British Christianity. Early Quakers and Their Theological Thought: 1647-1723 shows why the Quakers have survived when so many other 17th century radicals—including Diggers, Ranters, Levellers or Muggletonians—did not. Along the way readers also discover why the Friends, though initially derided, are so loved in the twenty-first century. Quaker theology, rejected by the powers that be in its own era, resonates with many 21st century readers.

Science And Christian Hope: A Dialogue And Integration Of Their End-Time Narratives, Wilson Angelo G. Espiritu

Ruminations about how the world will end continuously stir the curiosity and imagination of a lot of people. These thoughts mostly deal with the possible end-story of history. Science, on one hand, surmises history’s tragic end in its theories about cosmic death. On the other hand, Christianity believes in existence that transcends personal and cosmic death. On surface, the two seem to contradict each other. For some, this confirms the notion that science and Christianity cannot go hand and hand or, worse, that they are adversarial to each other. This paper argues that while the scientific and the Christian end-time …

The Promise Of Education 2017-2018, University Center For The Humanities
University Center for the Humanities Events
Education promises to be the key to a good life in the twenty-first century. College students often load up on debt only to graduate into an economy that does not offer enough high-paying jobs for them to prosper financially. Increasingly under scrutiny to produce quantifiable results, public school teachers and university professors struggle to define and defend the goals of liberal education and, especially, the value of the humanities. Journalists report and analysts of all sorts note the gap between expectations and realities. Even in a community inspired by the Promise, the promise of education can sometimes seem precarious. We …
A Conditional Defense Of Shame And Shame Punishment, Erick Ramirez
A Conditional Defense Of Shame And Shame Punishment, Erick Ramirez
Philosophy
In this paper I argue that, if we properly understand the nature of shame, it is sometimes justifiable to shame others in the context of a pluralistic multicultural society. I begin by assessing the accounts of shame provided by Cheshire Calhoun (2004) and Julien Deonna, Raffaele Rodogno and Fabrice Teroni (2012). I argue that both views have problems. I defend a theory of shame and embarrassment that connects both emotions to ‘whole-self’ properties. Shame and embarrassment, I claim, are products of the same underlying emotion. I distinguish between moralized and non-moralized shame in order to show when, and how, moral …

Amoral Antagonists: Interrogating The Myth Of The West In Cormac Mccarthy's Fiction, John Thomas Arthur
Amoral Antagonists: Interrogating The Myth Of The West In Cormac Mccarthy's Fiction, John Thomas Arthur
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The history of the American West, of conquering the frontier, forms the very backbone of national identity in the United States. Cormac McCarthy's southwestern works probe the Western mythic: Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men, and his screenplay The Counselor offer an alternative to the romantic, antiseptic Western American tradition, exposing the necessary complexity of a realm that cannot be encapsulated in the binary dualism that has so long defined it.
The amoral nature of Cormac McCarthy's antagonists demonstrates that the story of expansion is more complex than is/has been typically understood, both by scholars and the …
Selfhood, Historical Consciousness, And The State In International Relations Theory, Edinson Oquendo
Selfhood, Historical Consciousness, And The State In International Relations Theory, Edinson Oquendo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work seeks to examine the role of the state in international relations. While international relations treat states as institutions endowed with agency, they lack any means of explaining how the state can gain agency, autonomy, and rationality.
My dissertation seeks to reorient the theoretical assumptions of international relations in two ways. I develop a theory of the of the state that seeks to explain the mechanisms by which individuals are able to form collective social institutions and to endow them with authority and agency. I examine the relationship of the individuals to collective bodies such as states that can …
A Raucous Entertainment: Melodrama, Race, And The Search For Moral Legibility In Nineteenth-Century America, Sarah M. Olivier
A Raucous Entertainment: Melodrama, Race, And The Search For Moral Legibility In Nineteenth-Century America, Sarah M. Olivier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gathering together episodes from American theater history, my dissertation focuses on the destabilizing identities and paradoxical resolutions of so-called "Indian" and slavery plays to address nineteenth-century melodrama's fundamental engagement with race. Melodrama is a spectacular form that uses iconic images to move audiences to feel powerful emotions and to assign moral legibility to societal problems. Given the significant role of territorial expansion and chattel slavery in US history, race has always presented Americans with crucial moral dilemmas. Melodrama has long provided a dominant mode of representation for addressing such dilemmas that hinges upon racially inflected conceptions of good and evil. …
