Dissonance Between Personal Belief And Professional Values And The Challenge Of Facing Other Conflicting Ideas, Christopher Tan Jan 2017

Dissonance Between Personal Belief And Professional Values And The Challenge Of Facing Other Conflicting Ideas, Christopher Tan

Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics

It is the recommendation of this author that, in regards to this case, Jess Smith should complete the project despite her misgivings about the ethical nature of the band. However, Smith should ensure that both the client and manager are notified of her concerns along with the specific components of the project with which she took issue. The case of Jess Smith and the Design Firm ultimately highlights the issue regarding how to resolve dissonance between personal belief and professional values and more broadly the challenge of facing other ideas that challenge an individual’s personal convictions.

Skeptically Optimistic, Moira Hammons Jan 2017

Skeptically Optimistic, Moira Hammons

Writing Center Analysis Papers

While many "soft" writing tutoring skills have helped Hammons in her classroom, she finds that not all tutoring skills transfer well to teaching. Hammons is complimentary of peer tutoring's emphasis on wait time, silence, and adapting to individual needs. However, she finds she does not need these skills as often in teaching because of the long-term relationship she has with her students. Hammons asserts that better student and tutor education on the purpose of writing centers--along with students visiting the same tutor repeatedly-- will help tutors and students make the most of their brief time together.

Learning To Write By Teaching Writing, Richard A. Blake Jan 2017

Learning To Write By Teaching Writing, Richard A. Blake

Writing Center Analysis Papers

Blake asserts that English teachers and writing tutors both strive to answer students' problems by addressing language skills, grammar, assignment requirements, and brainstorming. He warns that students' concerns must come first, even if teachers and tutors find alternative concerns in the students' writing. After helping students address their concerns more thoroughly, students can take advantage of writing center tutors to make more universal changes.

Age Perception And The Peer-Tutor Relationship, Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq Jan 2017

Age Perception And The Peer-Tutor Relationship, Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq

Writing Center Analysis Papers

As a non-traditional graduate student and peer writing tutor, Itchuaqiaq explores the challenges she and other older students encounter connecting with their much-younger undergraduate tutees. Itchuaquiq includes several reflections from other non-traditional graduate peer tutors that explain the struggles they face establishing an appropriate peer power balance. Additionally, Itchuaquiq calls for more writing center research on how age affects tutees' writing center perceptions and experiences.

Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), Lazarus Ejike Onuh Jan 2017

Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), Lazarus Ejike Onuh

Theology Graduate Theses

The women of the Old Testament were not merely ancillary to the men. From the matriarchal era down to the monarchical period, the Old Testament eloquently attests to the equality and shared responsibility between man and woman. The creation of הָֽאָדָם֙ (mankind) in the image and likeness of God confers on both the male and female an ontological equality; an equality that is shown in their joint authority over creation (Genesis 1:27-28). While not denying the fact that the Old Testament can rightly be viewed as a product of predominantly male authors and features a galaxy of male actors, it …

Through the narrator's unique lens, the stories explore gender, sexuality, mental illness, family, and loneliness. The narrator's struggles with belonging and overarching feelings of abandonment intertwine with the sometimes isolating and dangerous landscape of Florida. Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin Jan 2017

Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin

English Faculty Publications

This chapter examines U.S.-based approaches to curricular revision of the Rhetoric and Writing Minor at the American University in Cairo (AUC) through analysis of faculty interviews and relevant artifacts. Through this analysis, and consideration of AUC’s development in the context of changes in Egypt, the chapter argues that U.S.-based curricular approaches satisfied various local needs among AUC’s writing faculty and students. These findings complicate claims within international composition studies, which are concerned with non-reflective export of U.S. linguistic, pedagogical and program models into international sites. This chapter calls for expanding the perspective of U.S.-based approaches to composition studies to include …

Minority Religions In The Sasanian Empire: Suppression, Integration And Relations With Rome, Lee Patterson

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Gauging the importance of religion to the exercise of political will inthe Sasanian world requires enormous care. It is all too easy to takethe Great Kings at their word as they championed the doctrines ofZoroastrianism in their political pronouncements, especially as someof them also persecuted Christianity. Whether or not such sentimentswere genuine, a closer analysis of the evidence suggests a more pragmaticroyal use of religion. The political realities on the groundwere more often the deciding factor in how the kings related to thereligious sectors of Sasanian society. This state of affairs sometimesset the kings against the Zoroastrian clerics, whose agendas …

This qualitative study explored how international students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism and how such concepts shaped their college experiences. The participating international college students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism through media, relationships, formal education, and lived experiences. They defined these concepts in varying ways and had varying racial ideologies.

The Morality Of Same Sex Marriage: How Not To Globalize A Cultural Anomie, Chris O. Akpan Jan 2017

The Morality Of Same Sex Marriage: How Not To Globalize A Cultural Anomie, Chris O. Akpan

Journal of Health Ethics

The question of the morality of same-sex marriage has become quite prevalent in the 21st century. Some western cultures believe that same-sex marriage is morally defensible and can be legalized. Using the human right fad and political might, they subtly engineer the globalization of this phenomenon. This move has been strongly opposed mostly by ‘developing’ nations and some churches across nations. The argument of such group is that same-sex marriage is immoral, unnatural and ungodly. This paper defends the thesis that same-sex marriage cannot morally be defended successfully. It shows that same-sex marriage is not exclusively a western phenomenon …

The Modern Church Communicates: Rhetoric And Hypertext In Church Website Design, Edward Palmer Jan 2017

The Modern Church Communicates: Rhetoric And Hypertext In Church Website Design, Edward Palmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Internet and the World Wide Web have supplanted many paper-based information systems. People turn to the web to locate local services in the same way they find ecommerce sites such as Amazon. Churches of all sizes must develop effective and attractive websites to attract new members and inform existing members. These two groups form distinct audiences that must be correctly targeted by the website content. Other churches may visit to gather ideas for their programs; they are a third group of site visitors. Organization of hypertext on the web requires skills that are different than writing for print. Technical …

At the time, the Assyrian Empire was the largest empire the world had ever known. They were creators of a formidable army with advanced weaponry and military tactics, including psychological warfare. This military supported the empire's ambitions …

Locating Experience In Time And Place: A Look At Young Adult Fiction And Spiritual Intelligence, L Westenberg

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

Spiritual intelligence describes self-awareness and intuition, with the development of creative thinking, compassion, and connectedness with others. Many researchers point to an awakening and development of spiritual intelligence that is enhanced through exploration of existential questions within the genre of young adult fiction. Such literature absorbs the adolescent reader so that they become transported into the narrative, exploring a sense of self and of others This article discusses the ways in which young adult fiction, including comparison of a novel of older context (An Episode of Sparrows) with contemporary dystopian fiction (The Maze Runner), can foster …
