Apuntes Para Una Teoría De La Traducción Latinoamericana, Martín L. Gaspar
Apuntes Para Una Teoría De La Traducción Latinoamericana, Martín L. Gaspar
Spanish Faculty Research and Scholarship
The article addresses the following questions from the perspective of history: Is there a Latin American translation theory? What are its contents? First, it identifies the “Latin American need” for translation resulting from the emergence of nation states, and describes its specificities through a comparison with the initial debate on modern Western translation theory carried out in Germany at the beginning of the 19th century. It then traces the subsequent diverse uses of translation as a procedure in the search for identity. Finally, it discusses the debate between Arguedas and Cortázar at the end of the 1960s, which reveals the …
Desperate And Determined Men: West Virginia's Lincoln County Feud, Brandon Ray Kirk
Desperate And Determined Men: West Virginia's Lincoln County Feud, Brandon Ray Kirk
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Lincoln County Feud occurred between 1878 and 1890 in the Harts Creek community of Lincoln and Logan counties, West Virginia. The aim of this thesis is to determine the causes of the feud, explore factors that contributed to its escalation, and identify reasons for its conclusion. The Lincoln County Feud arose out of personal grievances between prominent residents Paris Brumfield and Canaan Adkins, intensified due to the changing socioeconomic nature of the Harts Creek community, transformed into a contest among merchants for economic and political supremacy, and concluded with the elimination or outmigration of anti-Brumfield factions. Late nineteenth century …
Smoke And Silver: Money, Credit, And The Failure Of Economic Diversification In The Seventeenth Century Virgina, Christopher Calton
Smoke And Silver: Money, Credit, And The Failure Of Economic Diversification In The Seventeenth Century Virgina, Christopher Calton
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Historians have long been perplexed by Virginia's dependency on tobacco in the seventeenth century. Despite continual efforts by both the Virginia and British governments, the small planters in the colony continued to overproduce tobacco, seemingly to their own detriment. This thesis argues that the failures of economic diversification are best understood when the advantages of tobacco are broken down into natural, artificial, and monetary factors. Tobacco enjoyed many natural advantages of alternative crops, and these advantages were buttressed by artificial advantages created by legislation that either directly or indirectly incentivized tobacco production. The most prominent of these are the legal …
"United We'll Win Our Stand": The Role Of Focalization In Representing Solidarity In The Anthems Of Three Holocaust Concentration Camps, Hillary Louise Herold
"United We'll Win Our Stand": The Role Of Focalization In Representing Solidarity In The Anthems Of Three Holocaust Concentration Camps, Hillary Louise Herold
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Concentration camps during the Holocaust were populated by various groups of people imprisoned for reasons that were not always associated with religious beliefs. This diversity led to a natural segregation among these groups of prisoners, dependent upon the prisoner’s nationality, the camp’s classification, and its date of establishment. Because of overwhelming feelings of isolation in the majority of the prisoners, it was common to turn to music and music making as means of creating solidarity between the prisoners for survival of their day-to-day experiences. Some works became popular to such an extent through their performances by both prisoners and SS …
Formal And Functional Linguistic Properties Of Esl Textbooks, Jessica Shea Lewis
Formal And Functional Linguistic Properties Of Esl Textbooks, Jessica Shea Lewis
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Based on the formal and functional perspectives espoused in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the main purpose of this thesis was to investigate the extent to which such lexico-grammatical features as lexical density, choice of nominal groups, and grammatical metaphor are used in ESL texts to scaffold target language proficiency levels. Of the number of lexico-grammatical metafunctions and their functional constituents, interpersonal metafunctional categories were analyzed from these three functional features in this thesis in order to reveal the ways in which interpersonal categories and the lexico-grammatical features are correlated as the level of difficulty of each text increases.
The analysis …
In The Company Of Angels: Expressions Of Personal Autonomy, Authority, And Agency In Early Anglo-Saxon Monasticism, William Tanner Smoot
In The Company Of Angels: Expressions Of Personal Autonomy, Authority, And Agency In Early Anglo-Saxon Monasticism, William Tanner Smoot
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In this thesis I examine the opportunities for individual agency and social and spiritual autonomy in the seventh-and-eighth-century Anglo-Saxon kingdoms occasioned by the introduction and development of Christian monasticism. The term “autonomy” concerns the degree to which individuals managed to determine the social order and nature, as well as spiritual character, of their ensuing lives through an adherence to monastic practice. Early Anglo-Saxon Christianity assumed a monastic character, and from the outset coenobitic communities acquired and maintained certain rights regarding their internal governance and social development from their ecclesiastic and secular superiors, which conceptually separated religious households from those of …
Bad Things To Good People: Stories, Christopher Ryne Brewer
Bad Things To Good People: Stories, Christopher Ryne Brewer
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Bad Things to Good People: Stories is a brief collection of five fictional short stories. As the collection’s title, which also serves as a bookending table of contents, indicates, these stories focus on the wide-ranging idea of bad things happening to good people. Written mostly in the literary style of minimalism, these stories explore various themes which circulate around topics such as: relationships, both familial and romantic, grieving losses, and a basic human need to make meaning of the sometimes-troubling events in one’s life. In the introduction to this collection, the stories offered here are compared alongside the works of …
Forging A Bluegrass Commonwealth: The Kentucky Statehood Movement And The Politics Of The Trans-Appalachian West, 1783–1792, Christopher L. Leadingham
Forging A Bluegrass Commonwealth: The Kentucky Statehood Movement And The Politics Of The Trans-Appalachian West, 1783–1792, Christopher L. Leadingham
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In 1893 historian Frederick Jackson Turner first presented his frontier thesis to a group of historians at the World’s Columbian Exposition, a fair honoring the four-hundredth anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ expedition, in Chicago, Illinois. Since then, scholars have long debated the role that the frontier played in shaping the development of the United States. The Kentucky statehood movement emerged at a critical juncture in the early republic’s history, and, when viewed in a transatlantic context, becomes much more important to the development of the United States and larger Atlantic world than what has generally been recognized. Kentuckians found themselves at …
Surviving Fallout In Appalachia: An Examination Of Class Differences Within Civil Defense Preparation In West Virginia During The Early Years Of The Cold War, Tristan Miranda Williams
Surviving Fallout In Appalachia: An Examination Of Class Differences Within Civil Defense Preparation In West Virginia During The Early Years Of The Cold War, Tristan Miranda Williams
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Civil defense and West Virginia are not likely to be considered in tandem. What would make West Virginia significant during the Cold War? West Virginia is a state that has been synonymous with family feuds, hillbillies, moonshine, and coal mining. Few have considered West Virginia beyond these stereotypes and scant work has been done beyond that. The impact of the Cold War has been looked at through multiple angles but few have looked at the significant role West Virginia played during this time. Possibly, few have even considered that it played a role at all. Through examination of primary sources …
Missing Mother: The Female Protagonist's Regression To The Imaginary Order In Shirley Jackson's The Haunting Of Hill House, The Sundial, And We Have Always Lived In The Castle, Julie Ann Baker
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study examines the psyches of the female protagonists from three of Shirley Jackson’s Gothic novels: Eleanor Vance in The Haunting of Hill House, Aunt Fanny Halloran in The Sundial, and Merricat Blackwood in We Have Always Lived in the Castle. A psychoanalytic and feminist reading is applied to the texts to elucidate the characters’ rejection of the Symbolic Order and regression to the Imaginary Order, and Lacan’s theories of the Desire of the Mother and objet petit a are also applied to the texts to further delineate this regression. Julia Kristeva’s work regarding the lost object of the mother …
"God, Mother And Island Creek": The Story Of Holden Central School And The Emergence Of Nurturing Paternalism, Harley D. Walden
"God, Mother And Island Creek": The Story Of Holden Central School And The Emergence Of Nurturing Paternalism, Harley D. Walden
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The story of the community of Holden, West Virginia (Logan County), Island Creek Coal Company, and its model school (Holden Central School) offers a counternarrative to the dominant deficit-oriented narratives concerning Appalachian education. In particular, the progressive nature of Island Creek Coal Company led it to create a model coal camp community and a school that educated their employees’ children. The school operated from 1922 until 1970, when the combined elementary and junior high school closed its doors forever. Island Creek Coal Company both designed, supplied, and oversaw the daily operations of a benevolent community with all the modern amenities …

"The Whole Building Is A Classroom": An Oral History Of A School's Role In The Culture Of The Community, Valerie Free Jones
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Edward Lee and Lulu McClain gave the gift of a new high school to the rural Appalachian community of Greenfield, Ohio, in 1915. Inspired in part by John Dewey’s Progressive theories of education, the school became the center of the community, both literally and figuratively, providing the best, most modern education for its students. The school was particularly unique in its focus on the arts, with its spaces carefully crafted and developed; its halls and classrooms filled with over 200 pieces of classic and original art, including murals, sculpture, and other works; and its curriculum inspired by art-based ideas of …
The Power To Overcome: The Resistance And Resiliency Of Black Motherhood, Nathan Full
The Power To Overcome: The Resistance And Resiliency Of Black Motherhood, Nathan Full
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Motherhood is not a monolithic experience. The intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and class are integral facets that influence and control how one practices maternity, especially in a white hegemonic state. Further, control and choice serve as contributing factors, influencing the level of control women have over entering maternity and how a mother claims ties to her offspring. With these intersectional factors and control measures combined, motherhood is a complicated matter, one that influences how women practice maternity. The practice of motherhood is influenced by race, with black women experiencing a historical struggle in their relationships with motherhood. These difficulties …

She continued for a week and managed to photograph around 100 couples. Continuing to exchange glances with unknown strangers …
"Where Nature Was Most Plain And Pure": The Sacred Locus Amoenus And Its Profane Threat In Andrew Marvell's Pastoral Poetry, James Brent King
"Where Nature Was Most Plain And Pure": The Sacred Locus Amoenus And Its Profane Threat In Andrew Marvell's Pastoral Poetry, James Brent King
MA in English Theses
This thesis attempts to contribute to the vast pool of scholarship on Andrew Marvell’s poetry by analyzing his use of the dichotomy between the sacred and the profane in five of his pastoral poems. This objective is accomplished by first examining the dichotomies use as it relates to the archetype of the sacred locus amoenus in the story of the garden of Eden in Genesis, in Hesiod’s account of the golden age, and in Virgil’s first Eclogue. After discussing these ancient texts, the focus turns toward Marvell’s “The Mower Against Gardens,” “Damon the Mower,” “The Mower to the Glowworms,” “The …
The Intrinsic Factors That Influence Successful College Writing, Kenneth Dean Carlstrom
The Intrinsic Factors That Influence Successful College Writing, Kenneth Dean Carlstrom
MA in English Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of several intrinsic or non-cognitive factors that can positively influence successful collegiate writing. Using college writing as a forum for exploring intrinsic traits such as curiosity, grit, self-efficacy, time management, organization, and a growth mindset, reveals success stories in this qualitative study. Since writing clearly connects to the vicissitudes students experience, it serves as an appropriate means of measuring intrinsic characteristics. This study entwines student experiences with cognitive theorists to generate benefits for students, high school teachers, and college professors. Through extension, the power of mentors, the growth mindset, and …
Colorblind: How Cable News And The “Cult Of Objectivity” Normalized Racism In Donald Trump’S Presidential Campaign, Amanda Leeann Shoaf
Colorblind: How Cable News And The “Cult Of Objectivity” Normalized Racism In Donald Trump’S Presidential Campaign, Amanda Leeann Shoaf
MA in English Theses
This thesis explores the connection between genre and the normalization of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump’s varied racist, sexist, and xenophobic comments during the height of the 2016 General Election. Examining the genre of cable news and the network CNN specifically, this thesis analyzes both the broad genre-specific elements and specific instances during CNN’s panel discussions where that normalization occurred. Combining Carolyn Miller’s framework for deconstructing genre, Classical rhetorical devices like stasis theory, Judith Butler’s interpretation of performativity, and pertinent political and historical context, this thesis highlights and examines the impact the “cult of objectivity” had on CNN’s normalization of Donald …

Antique Cloisonné Japanese Beads, Chris Prussing
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Intricate cloisonné beads in Japan track the 19th-century upheavals in technological development and society. While late Edo Japan had developed its own aesthetic based upon Chinese sources, the Meiji quest for Western technology produced a uniquely Japanese cloisonné industry unmatched elsewhere in the world. Cloisonné beads mirror this change, beginning in the 1830s with decorative motifs derived from Ming cloisonné and Edo glass beads, and morphing throughout the Meiji era into tiny masterpieces demonstrating a uniquely Japanese art form captured in advanced enamel technology.

Patterns Of Scandinavian Bead Use Between The Iron Age And Viking Age, Ca. 600-1000 C.E., Matthew Delvaux
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
This paper places Johan Callmer’s seminal chronology of Viking-Age beads in the broader contexts of subsequent research. It begins with an examination of how Callmer’s chronology of grave goods can be linked into preceding chronologies from the cemeteries of late Iron-Age Bornholm and mainland Sweden (ca. 540-860). It then considers how these chronologies compare with those available from the early Scandinavian emporium at Ribe, a site of bead production and trade (ca. 700-850). Finally, it provides a detailed analysis of Callmer’s classification system and the implications of his chronological framework (ca. 800-1000 A.D.). Comparing these diverse chronologies reveals divergent patterns …

Upgrading The Web-Based Chinese-Learning Program Project, Dongdong Chen
Upgrading The Web-Based Chinese-Learning Program Project, Dongdong Chen
Digital Humanities
In 2003, Dr. Chen developed a web-based program, http://tltc.shu.edu/chen, to target the challenges of learning the Chinese language. This tool facilitates the acquisition of Chinese pronunciation and the writing system for beginners. For over a decade, Dr. Chen and her students, as well as others in the Chinese-learning community, have used this program. While the online program has been functioning well for the instructional purposes, the media files must be updated in order to support mobile learning. Furthermore, copyright considerations will be addressed regarding the integration of existing video clips. The proposed upgrade will be achieved through a collaboration with …
