The Humanistic Value Of Individual Events Participation, Leah White Jan 2017

The Humanistic Value Of Individual Events Participation, Leah White

National Forensic Journal

Forensic educators have long struggled to communicate the value of forensic participation to those not familiar with the activity. Drawing from literature in the field of counseling and student personnel, this paper argues participation in individual events is beneficial because it allows students to engage in what Baxter Magolda (2001) refers to as self-authorship among good company. Using interviews and autoethnographic methods, I investigate how participation in competitive forensics helps students meet personal growth needs. I conclude with suggestions for how forensic educators can communicate the student development goals achieved through forensic participation.

The Family Politics Of The Federation Of South African Women: A History Of Public Motherhood In Women’S Antiracist Activism, Meghan Healy-Clancy Jan 2017

The Family Politics Of The Federation Of South African Women: A History Of Public Motherhood In Women’S Antiracist Activism, Meghan Healy-Clancy

History Faculty Publications

This article reexamines the roots of the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW), the first national organization of women from all state-defined racial groups united against apartheid, founded in 1954. It argues that the deep history of public motherhood in southern Africa was what made FEDSAW possible: biological and symbolic motherhood had long been associated with responsibility for public social life in the region. Moreover, the article demonstrates that the first half of the twentieth century represented a time of profound transformation in the ways that women in southern Africa talked about and experienced motherhood. The influences of both missionary …

"In The Days Of My Youth": Frances Fulton Cunningham Harper, Frances Cunningham Harper, Pamela Divanna

Adams County History

My niece Janet suggests that I write the memories of my youth. It will not be an exciting or adventurous story. The older children of our family could have told more stirring tales, for they lived through the Civil War, and the momentous days of the Battle of Gettysburg.

I came along towards the close of 1864 when hoopskirts had passed their greatest rotundity, and pantalettes were on the wane. I remember seeing my sister Maggie, in embroidered pantalettes, but I never wore them. I did have a hoopskirt. It was bought by my sister Jennie, somewhat against my mother’s …

The Farm In The City In The Recent Past: Thoughts On A More Inclusive Urban Historiography, Ruth Glasser Jan 2017

The Farm In The City In The Recent Past: Thoughts On A More Inclusive Urban Historiography, Ruth Glasser

Urban and Community Studies Faculty Writing

The scholarly and journalistic literature usually treats urban agriculture as a new phenomenon, but it is a neglected dimension of urban history. Some U.S. cities, at least in the Northeast, had food-raising and processing practices not just in colonial times but right up until the relatively recent past. Three areas of history are explored that have mostly omitted discussion of city food production but nonetheless provide important frameworks to explore such production: urban development, agricultural, and immigrant history. Woven throughout this piece is evidence from a study of Waterbury, Connecticut. Local food production did not die when the Industrial Revolution …

Gender And Military Service, Erin Owens Jan 2017

Gender And Military Service, Erin Owens

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

During the American Revolution and the American Civil War, females were among the many who participated in battle. Many, instead of situating themselves among combat, decided to act as spies in order to show their patriotism for the war effort. These women proved to their male combatants that women were far more capable of a "man's job" than what was initially thought. They broke away from the gendered mold of domesticity and changed the way in which women were seen. No longer simply fragile housewives who could only handle the duty of running a home and taking care of children, …

Folding Nature Back Upon Itself: Aristotle And The Rebirth Of "Physis", Marjolein Oele Jan 2017

Folding Nature Back Upon Itself: Aristotle And The Rebirth Of "Physis", Marjolein Oele

Philosophy

“Folding Nature Back Upon Itself: Aristotle and the Rebirth of Physis,” confronts us with nature’s receding presence and proposes to think through a rebirth of physis. Following Aristotle’s concept of physis, this paper locates two axes along which such a rethinking of physis can take place. The first axis is vertical, and turns around the fundamental tension that each natural being faces in seeking to overcome its own matter in order to reach transcendence. The second axis is horizontal, and follows Aristotle’s ideas that physis cannot unfold unless aided, stimulated, nurtured and enforced by external factors such as one’s environment, …

Witch’S Song: Morality, Name-Calling And Poetic Authority In The Argonautica, Jessica Blum Jan 2017

Witch’S Song: Morality, Name-Calling And Poetic Authority In The Argonautica, Jessica Blum

Modern & Classical Languages Faculty Publications

This paper focuses on the interaction of Roman moral discourse and autonomous female voices in the Argonautica and Ovid’s Heroides. It argues that Valerius’ heroines use the moral language of the Heroides to reflect on the function of traditional language. By assigning culturally encoded roles to themselves and one another, these heroines present the audience with alternative versions of their stories that undermine the very terms they employ: they thus enact the problems inherent in using the language of the past to interpret the present. The cultural vocabulary that authorizes their voices to an internal audience presents a serious threat …

A Dialogue On Disaster: Antichrists In Jewish And Christian Apocalypses And Their Medieval Recensions, Natalie Latteri Jan 2017

A Dialogue On Disaster: Antichrists In Jewish And Christian Apocalypses And Their Medieval Recensions, Natalie Latteri

Theology & Religious Studies

This paper examines textual and iconographic representations of antichrist personae in medieval Christian and Jewish manuscripts. Through a common language of polemics, Christians and Jews conflated antichrist personae to represent a more generalized category of apocalyptic antagonist that reflected the most significant temptations and threats to each respective religious community. As will be argued here, the greatest temptation and threat for Christians and Jews alike were those posed by members of the other religious group

"This recording has been a labour of love and a long journey which has finally come to fruition. It all began with an idea that developed into a doctoral dissertation The Flute Music of Luigi Zaninelli, which has now, many years later, culminated with this CD.

Making The Invisible Visible: The Presence Of Older Women Artists In Early Modern Artistic Biography, Julia K. Dabbs Jan 2017

Making The Invisible Visible: The Presence Of Older Women Artists In Early Modern Artistic Biography, Julia K. Dabbs

Art History Publications

One intention of this chapter is to reverse the current misapprehension of the longevity of early modern women artists, and render these “invisible” elder women creators more visible. Yet in addition, I will consider how the woman artist was characterized by her biographer in old age, and provide some comparison with literary tropes associated with elder male artists of the period, to see to what extent gender may have factored into cultural perceptions and attitudes towards old age.
