Vocational Apologetics An Argument For Using The Lutheran Understanding Of Vocation As A Form Of Enfleshed Apologetics For The Church To Engage A Cultural Setting Influenced By The Criticism Of The New Atheists, Kirk Clayton
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Clayton, Kirk M. “Vocational Apologetics: An Argument for Using the Lutheran Understanding of Vocation as a Form of Enfleshed Apologetics for the Church to Engage a Cultural Setting Influenced by the Criticisms of the New Atheists.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2017. 252 pp.
This dissertation examines criticisms against Christianity from the New Atheists (Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, Hitchens, and Stenger), considers problems with how the church has formulated its apologetic response, and concludes that Martin Luther’s understanding of vocation applied to the Christian life offers a significant contribution to shaping an apologetic response to the New Atheism.
Apologetics is best understood …
Thresholds Of Atrocity: Liberal Violence And The Politics Of Moral Vision, Kristofer J. Petersen-Overton
Thresholds Of Atrocity: Liberal Violence And The Politics Of Moral Vision, Kristofer J. Petersen-Overton
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
All political communities set normative limits to the acceptable use of force. A threshold of atrocity indicates the point at which acceptable violence meets the boundaries of the unacceptable. In liberal democratic states such norms are ostensibly set higher. Hence, there is a theoretical threshold to the modern state’s ability to act in ways that violate norms it claims to uphold. Paradoxically, thresholds of atrocity are almost never breached and unconscionable violence occurs regularly. This study seeks to explain the persistence of extreme violence by developing a theory of atrocity grounded in moral vision. Liberal democratic nation-states are able to …
Chicana/Latina Feminist Critical Qualitative Inquiry Meditations On Global Solidarity, Spirituality, And The Land, Cinthya M. Saavedra, Michelle Salazar Perez
Chicana/Latina Feminist Critical Qualitative Inquiry Meditations On Global Solidarity, Spirituality, And The Land, Cinthya M. Saavedra, Michelle Salazar Perez
Mexican American Studies Faculty Publications
In this article we take a journey into using Chicana/Latina feminisms as one way to unearth new possibilities for critical qualitative inquiry (CQI). We start by offering a brief overview of Gloria Anzaldua’s influence on Chicana/Latina feminism, focusing on how she has inspired researching and writing from within rather than about as a decolonial turn (Keating, 2015). We then venture into new imaginaries to pose questions that would lead us to ponder about global feminista solidarity, the spirit, and the land. Our hope is that these contemplations lead us on a path of conocimiento where we can put the broken …

A Chasm Between Two Vanguards: Near Encounters Of Russian Emigre Marxists And Dadaism In Switzerland, Bryan K. Herman, Axel Fair-Schulz
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In the year 1916, Switzerland was an island of peace in a sea of belligerence. Surrounded by Germany, France, and Italy, Switzerland was one of the few European counties to maintain its neutrality during the war that transformed Europe into a graveyard. It also became an ideal sanctuary for those who opposed the brutality and strident nationalism of World War I. Ever since the defeat of the 1905 Revolution in Russia, Switzerland had acted as an ideal place of refuge for members of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (the RSDLP, a Marxist party founded in 1898). This party sought …
Zurich And The Birth Of French Surrealism, Dwight Page
Zurich And The Birth Of French Surrealism, Dwight Page
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Paris has long been regarded as the artistic and literary capital of the world. Yet little known is the historical fact that Zurich played an equally fundamental and key role in the development of modern art, the birth of the avant-garde in literature and the arts, and the advent of French Surrealism.
What's So Private About Private Property?, Matthew Blake Wilson
What's So Private About Private Property?, Matthew Blake Wilson
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This work attempts to determine what kinds of institutions—if any—the state should implement to protect private property, and investigates how individuals and communities operating within those institutions ought to behave. Because the laws produced by such institutions may conflict with community rights, social welfare, and justice, the political authorities—including judges and legislators—who operate the institutions must determine whether, and under what conditions, individual property rights ought to prevail over conflicting rights. I argue that considerations of privacy are necessary for making these determinations. Privacy—the condition that requires limitations upon the ability of others to access one’s physical spaces—has normative significance …

Imperial Butterfly, Dagmar Rothschild
Imperial Butterfly, Dagmar Rothschild
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis will examine a conceptual album that I composed, an exploration of the interaction between music and language and its effects on human emotions. I will attempt to demonstrate—in this thesis and in my composition—that when music and language come together in specific combinations, a possibility opens up, not simply for the creation of emotion but for something much more profound: personal transformation. This transformation takes place mentally (through language), and physically/molecularly/bodily (through music). It is, in essence, a kind of healing, what I have come to call “sonic nourishment.”
Imperial Butterfly follows one character, a woman (whom I …

Cozy Mart: Convenient Aesthetics, Eric John Edvalson
Cozy Mart: Convenient Aesthetics, Eric John Edvalson
Theses and Dissertations
Convenience stores in their various forms are not only commercial outlets of foodstuffs and sundry items but are also experiential in nature; the act of going to a convenience store is a culturally shared experience. In homage to these spaces, Cozy Mart is a public art installation and performance which recreates this shared experience in an idealized form. Based on do-it-yourself culture, appropriation of public space, and artistic traditions of sculpture and printmaking, Cozy Mart invites interaction with art outside of the traditional gallery space and capitalizes on alternative methods of art distribution.

The Nfl's Alternative Facts, Richard C. Crepeau

Jobs For Justice(S): Corruption In The Supreme Court Of India, Madhav S. Aney, Shubhankar Dam, Giovanni Ko
Research Collection School Of Economics
We investigate whether judicial decisions are affected by career concerns of judges byanalysing two questions: Do judges respond to pandering incentives by ruling in favourof the government in the hope of receiving jobs after retiring from the Court? Does thegovernment actually reward judges who ruled in its favour with prestigious jobs? To answerthese questions we construct a dataset of all Supreme Court of India cases involving thegovernment from 1999 till 2014, with an indicator for whether the decision was in its favouror not. We find that pandering incentives have a causal effect on judicial decision-making.The exposure of a judge to …
Roosevelt, Naturally, Duane G. Jundt
Roosevelt, Naturally, Duane G. Jundt
Northwestern Review
This essay examines the outpouring of works on Theodore Roosevelt the conservationist and hunter since the publication of Douglas Brinkley’s The Wilderness Warrior in 2009. It provides brief reviews of several books, including children’s books, and an episode of a television documentary series. It also looks at two museum exhibitions and a play that deal with Roosevelt and conservation. The essay emphasizes the centrality that many of the works give to the connection between Roosevelt’s environmental ethos and his hunting. Under review are Douglas Brinkley, The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America; R.L. Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt: …

Culturally And Linguistically Humble: A Preparation For Living Abroad, Diana Gonzalez
Northwestern Review
Presented in 2016 at Baekseok University in Cheonan City, South Korea at the 8th international conference of the International Association for the Promotion of Christian Higher Education (IAPCHE), this paper lays out the rationale for the approach taken in Northwestern College’s required preparations for students studying abroad. Elements in the preparation include getting students to identify influences on them of their home culture; to talk about their motivations and goals for studying abroad; to engage with Duane Elmer’s Cross-Cultural Connections and David Smith’s Learning from the Stranger; and perhaps most importantly, to engage with E. Hockett, L. Samek, …
Not Rewriting Lazarus’ Story, Jackie Smallbones
Not Rewriting Lazarus’ Story, Jackie Smallbones
Northwestern Review
In this sermon, the author considers Jesus’ raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45). Focusing on the awkwardness of Jesus’ deliberate delay in coming, the sermon asks whether rewriting the incident to make Jesus appear more caring is advisable. No, rewriting the incident would undercut three lessons in the story as written. First, Jesus’ chief concern was with God and his glory. Second, Jesus revealed more about himself, namely, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Third, Jesus wanted to deepen the faith of Lazarus’ family, friends, and his disciples then and since.
Telling Fisk’S Story, John Hubers
Telling Fisk’S Story, John Hubers
Northwestern Review
Pliny Fisk (1792-1825) was one of two missionaries sent in 1819 by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) to the Ottoman Empire. This made them not only the first American missionaries in the Muslim majority world, but two of the first Americans to make a permanent move to the Middle East. Hubers’ book explores what it meant for Pliny and his companion Levi Parsons to make that trip, exploring in particular the impact this had on their perceptions of the religious other.
What makes this an interesting study is noting that Fisk never met a Middle Easterner …

Power, Liberalism, And Political Science: Some Christian Reflections, Daniel E. Young
Power, Liberalism, And Political Science: Some Christian Reflections, Daniel E. Young
Northwestern Review
How should a Christian political scientist think about power, liberalism, and political science? In answering this question, this article first defines power. Considered primarily in relation to the state, power is exercised in conflicts of interests: by officials, parties, or groups or elites getting others to do something the others would not otherwise do, or keeping one or more alternative from even being discussed, and perhaps obscuring what the real interests of others are. Then the argument turns to establishing that how one thinks about power is closely related to one’s larger political theory, e.g., what counts as the “real …
Gregory Of Tours, The Eastern Emperor, And Merovingian Gaul, Robert Winn
Gregory Of Tours, The Eastern Emperor, And Merovingian Gaul, Robert Winn
Northwestern Review
Gregory of Tours (538-594) was a historian of his time and place. His primary concerns were shaped by his theological, ecclesiastical, and political commitments: western orthodoxy, the Roman Catholic Church, and Merovingian Gaul. It thus is surprising that in his famous Ten Books of Histories he takes a more than passing interest in the eastern Roman Emperor and empire. This article explores Gregory’s passages on imperial Rome and argues that they were intended to highlight the virtues and vices of particular Merovingian kings in comparison with particular Roman emperors. Also, Gregory meant to subtly point to the dangers of Merovingian …

These two abstract art pieces are titled Filtering 1 and 2. Emphasizing simplicity of materials and relationship to family, they are layered tracings of the artist’s parents’ signatures in the packing slips of things sent her from her parents in South Korea. The pieces took eleven months of painstaking tracing work onto carbon paper until all the carbon was gone. The pieces were selected for exhibit in the A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, New York.
