Punishment And Reconciliation: Augustine, Peter Iver Kaufman

Punish the sin, not the sinner; easier said than done. Preaching on the second Psalm and purporting to address 'all who judge the earth,' Augustine wrestled with the problems attending punishment and reconciliation. The results recorded in his sermons and correspondence as well as in a few treatises perplex yet are worth considering before we investigate Augustine's more explicit remarks on the punishment of Donatist dissidents resisting reconciliation with the African church from which, he insisted, their predecessors had seceded in the early fourth century. The 1896-97 California Indian cession or reservation land map Number 1 was created in connection with the Schedule of Indian Land Cessions in the United States, an addendum to the Eighteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The schedule lists the date, where or how the cession or reservation was concluded, a description of the cessions or reservation, the tribe(s), additional historical data and remarks and a numerical designation reflected on the related map.

In March of 2015, MAPW student Princella Howard Dixon shared with the nation the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery March for Voting Rights. The Selma March is also the subject of the 2015 Academy Award- nominated film Selma. The film covers the fateful attempt of marchers to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge on “Bloody Sunday,” March 7, 1965, and the aftermath of that event. Princella, who at the time of the march was a freshman at an Iowa college, served as president for the youth division of the NAACP for the State of Iowa. She answered the …
