A Transcendental Argument For Liberalism, Samuel C. Rickless Mar 2017

A Transcendental Argument For Liberalism, Samuel C. Rickless

San Diego Law Review

Liberalism is the view that the state should not, except on mutually justifiable grounds, coerce a society’s citizens to adopt, support, or follow some particular comprehensive conception of the good. So understood, a liberal state, by definition, permits each citizen a zone of freedom delimited by her own understanding of the ingredients of a happy life. Liberalism, as a normative theory governing state–citizen (and, indirectly, citizen–citizen) relations, is opposed by various forms of totalitarianism, including theocracy and communism. A theocratic state is one that imposes a particular religious form of life on its citizens, and thereby restricts their freedom to …

Alexander On Koppelman On Alexander, Larry Alexander Mar 2017

Alexander On Koppelman On Alexander, Larry Alexander

San Diego Law Review

In my book Is There a Right of Freedom of Expression?, I argued that liberalism, to the extent it is defined by a commitment to freedom of illiberal speech, illiberal religions, and illiberal associations, is at its core paradoxical. For, I argued, if liberalism is the correct political philosophy, it must regard illiberal thought and its manifestations in action and policy as fundamentally mistaken. And these mistaken illiberal views cannot be deemed by the liberal to have value as views, except perhaps for whatever instructive value they might have in getting people to see the truth of liberalism. When such …

La Violencia: Los Semas De Rasgos Diegéticos Y Miméticos De La Literatura Colombiana De La Segunda Mitad Del Siglo Xx, Omar Fernando Sánchez Forero

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Effects Of Grace On Self-Forgiveness With A Religious Community, Laura Geczy-Haskins Mar 2017

The Effects Of Grace On Self-Forgiveness With A Religious Community, Laura Geczy-Haskins

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Genuine self-forgiveness entails accepting responsibility for wrongdoing while experiencing a continued sense of self-worth (Enright & Human Development Study Group, 1996; Fisher & Exline, 2006; Hall & Fincham, 2005; Martin, 2008; Szablowinski, 2012; Vitz & Meade, 2011; Wenzel, Woodyatt, & Hedrick, 2012; Woodyatt & Wenzel, 2013a; Woodyatt & Wenzel, 2013b). Previous research has demonstrated that a benevolent concept of God and a personal sense of God’s forgiveness facilitate self-forgiveness (Exline, Yali, & Lobel,1999; Hall & Fincham, 2008; Martin, 2008; McConnell & Dixon, 2012), suggesting that those who accept responsibility for the offense and believe God can forgive that offense will …

Influence: Art, Activism, And Identity As Seen Through A Neurodivergent Lens, Anna Matejcek Mar 2017

Influence: Art, Activism, And Identity As Seen Through A Neurodivergent Lens, Anna Matejcek

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

My world has no separation between art, activism, and identity. As a neurodivergent individual, I experience life through hyperactive senses. It is an intense reality; however, it is the force that drives me to create, explore, discover and learn. My mind works like a kaleidoscope, always awash in colorful abstract images, each twist or turn reveals a new perspective. For my MFA visual art thesis, I used my neurodivergent brain as the foundation of my study. The concept formed in my mind first as blurry shapes and colors, and then came into focus as I began the process of gathering …

“Classbook Sense”: Genre And Girls’ School Yearbooks In The Early-Twentieth-Century American High School, Amy J. Lueck

English

In the spring of 1908, the students of Louisville Girls High School (LGHS) in Louisville, Kentucky, inaugurated their first school annual, a special edition of the school’s quarterly literary journal dedicated to the senior class. The object of this volume, as delineated in the preface, was “to collect into a narrow compass, and to arrange in a form convenient for reference, and consultation, a choice selection of the remarkable utterances, and pictured thoughts of the great among all classes, but chiefly of the great Seniors among the class of nineteen hundred and eight” (LGHS, Record 2). That is, a primary …

Right Here In River City: An Iowa Community At The Prairie School’S Edge [A Review By Klinkowitz Of Frank Lloyd Wright And Mason City: Architectural Heart Of The Prairie, By Roy R. Behrens], Jerome Klinkowitz Mar 2017

Right Here In River City: An Iowa Community At The Prairie School’S Edge [A Review By Klinkowitz Of Frank Lloyd Wright And Mason City: Architectural Heart Of The Prairie, By Roy R. Behrens], Jerome Klinkowitz

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Mason City, Iowa hosts the highest concentration of integrated Prairie School architecture in the world. Between 1908 and 1916 coherent groupings of commercial and residential buildings took their place on the quite literal Midwestern prairie as designed by the cream of the crop of young Chicago architects innovating in the direction first proposed by Louis Sullivan. On a corner of the downtown square Frank Lloyd Wright produced a three-part structure that wrapped around the intersection of two principal streets to house a bank, a hotel, and a connecting set of office and retail space. He tossed in a home for …

The Leadership Development Experiences Of Church Denomination Executives, Torrence E. Sparkman Mar 2017

The Leadership Development Experiences Of Church Denomination Executives, Torrence E. Sparkman

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

Leadership development through experiences is thought to be one of the most effective approaches in the development of leaders. Exploring the types of experiences of executive church leaders adds to the body of leadership development research focused on leadership lessons, and reveals the contexts through which these experiences were formed. this study applies a phenomenological approach to capture the essence of the leadership development experiences of several bishops within a single African American denomination. Six major themes emerged as important elements of their collective experience. these findings suggest that leadership development experiences for executive church leaders should include ministry venture …

Designed To Lead: The Church And Leadership Development, Shawn Ellis Mar 2017

Designed To Lead: The Church And Leadership Development, Shawn Ellis

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"the book presents biblical and practical aspects of the three c’s with suggestions on application. While the author’s biblical examples of conviction, culture and constructs are illustrative, there are few examples of present-day implementation, successful or otherwise. the authors assume that real-world expressions of these concepts are intuitive to the reader. It is surprising that research from Geiger’s company on church transformation was not used to provide an up-to-date, quantitative perspective to support the author’s positions."

The Impact Of Values Clarification And Expression Of Beliefs On Dysfunctional Leadership Among Church Lay Leaders, F. J. Cosgrove Mar 2017

The Impact Of Values Clarification And Expression Of Beliefs On Dysfunctional Leadership Among Church Lay Leaders, F. J. Cosgrove

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"the purpose of the study was to explore if the discovery and authentic expression of a leader’s values and beliefs may lower that leader’s tendencies toward these dysfunctions. the results of the study indicate that the more lay leaders in these congregations reported they were discovering and authentically expressing their values to their constituents, the lower were their reported levels of dysfunctional tendencies, with the exception of codependence in collegedale community church. a review of the literature validates the results obtained. It is therefore suggested that the more leaders discover and authentically express values and beliefs, the less dysfunction will …
