Female Madness In Greek Tradition And Medicine, Caitlin T. Connelly
Female Madness In Greek Tradition And Medicine, Caitlin T. Connelly
Student Publications
This paper considers the similarities and differences in Greek thought concerning female madness among both traditional views of madness and medical views. It identifies three broad types of female madness – Dionysian madness, most often associated with maenads and maenadism; desire-induced madness, associated with Aphrodite or Eros; and the medical views of madness of the Hippocratic Corpus, Plato, and other writers. Divinely-inspired madness was considered an assault on the individual from the outside, while the physicians considered madness to be an affliction from within. However, while desire-induced madness and medical madness were seen as the results of women avoiding men, …
Experience, Emotion, And Emoting: Jack Peirs And The Aftermath Of Loos, Laura G. Waters
Experience, Emotion, And Emoting: Jack Peirs And The Aftermath Of Loos, Laura G. Waters
Student Publications
An investigation into the personal letters of one man on the Western Front, this paper seeks to uncover some of the complexities of emotion and emoting within British societal narratives of the First World War. Conceptions of masculinity and stoicism imposed limitations on soldierly expression, forcing them to abide by preordained 'scripts' to continually qualify as men. The difficulty lay in finding ways to cope emotionally with their surroundings while still playing their 'roles'. By looking closely at the words and coping mechanisms of one man, Lieutenant-Colonel H.J.C. Peirs, in the aftermath of the Battle of Loos, this paper attempts …
A Critical Analysis Of Grand Corruption With Reference To International Human Rights And International Criminal Law: The Case Of Nigeria, Florence Anaedozie
A Critical Analysis Of Grand Corruption With Reference To International Human Rights And International Criminal Law: The Case Of Nigeria, Florence Anaedozie
Doctoral
Grand corruption remains a domestic crime that is not directly addressed by the international human rights and international criminal law regulatory frameworks. Scholars argue that the right to a society free of corruption is an inherent human right because dignity, equality and participation significantly depend upon it. The academic discourse linking corruption to the violation of human rights is relatively new, no regional or global human rights instrument has referred specifically to corruption while anti-corruption treaties rarely refer to human rights. There is also insufficient research within this area, establishing the direct causal link between high-level corruption and systemic human …

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Growing the “We:” Collaboration and Character Education
This project explores the intersection of collaboration and character education for elementary school children. Though character education has gained increasing popularity, most school programs seem more focused on cultivating the individual than on developing group identity, group creativity or group productivity. Some character education programs speak to global citizenship or being a responsible and contributing community member; but, few focus on the elements of character that enable successful and rewarding collaboration. In response, the author created a classroom resource called Growing the “We:” Collaboration and Character that details ten collaboration-related character strengths and …

Silence Emerging From Birds, Rebecca Macijeski
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation represents the culmination of five years of creative activity in poetry. Included within this document are three main components: 1.) a critical introduction to my book-length manuscript of original poems complete to satisfy the requirements of creative writing within the English Department; 2.) a description of my creative activity reflected in that book-length manuscript, and; 3.) a sample of previously published original poems from the manuscript. I will describe each of these components in greater detail below.
The critical introduction to the creative work seeks to explore and examine various aesthetic and theoretical influences on my poems. The …

El Rock En Nicaragua: Un Discurso De Resistencia Contra La Neoliberalización O Una Re-Definición De La Tradición, Martina Barinova
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Abstract in English
This work, which parts from the premise that music is a medium of communication with the potential to transform and create identities, explores rock music in Nicaragua since its beginning until the present. Nicaraguan rock music is born in a sociopolitical context of extreme economic instability and during a crisis of values in the last decade of the 20th century, with the end of the Sandinista Revolution and the establishment of neoliberal government. The young cultural movement, and rock in particular, constructs a discourse dissident from the patriarchal and capitalist hegemony and interrogates the social reality …
