The Model Minority Myths: Racism And Sexism Against Asian-American Community, Yingda Guo 17 Apr 2017

The Model Minority Myths: Racism And Sexism Against Asian-American Community, Yingda Guo 17

Honor Scholar Theses

This project aims to investigate the negative influences of the model minority stereotypes to Asian Americans. The model minority myth is the idea that members from a minority group with Asian heritages are considered to achieve a higher degree of educational and socioeconomic success than the average population. Asian Americans are usually perceived as model minorities who achieve high educational and socioeconomic success without many negative experiences in the U.S. However, a closer examination of the model minority myth indicates that this idea is quite generalized and misleading, which cannot stand for the diversity and complexity of Asian American experiences. …

Identifying Impressions Of Baba Yaga: Navigating The Uses Of Attachment And Wonder On Soviet And American Television, M. Armknecht, J. T. Rudy, Sibelan E.S. Forrester Apr 2017

Identifying Impressions Of Baba Yaga: Navigating The Uses Of Attachment And Wonder On Soviet And American Television, M. Armknecht, J. T. Rudy, Sibelan E.S. Forrester

Russian Faculty Works

The rise of Baba Yaga on international television provides an excellent case study for analyzing viewing practices associated with identification and allegiance. In analyzing Baba Yaga’s presence on Soviet and American television, we argue that viewing wonder tales leads to deep and lasting identification, attachment, and allegiance. Baba Yaga’s presence and popularity on Russian and American television allows us to explore how forming such deep impressions of a traditional character on television can provide trans-cultural viewers with tools to navigate between imagination and reality, thus helping them to better understand the ambiguities of life, including transnational cultural politics.

A Musical Analysis Of The Improvisational Style Of Tommy Turrentine, Jesse N. Mcbee Apr 2017

A Musical Analysis Of The Improvisational Style Of Tommy Turrentine, Jesse N. Mcbee

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Tommy Turrentine was a jazz trumpet player active in both Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and New York City. While he is highly respected among jazz musicians, particular those who developed a personal relationship with him in New York City, he seems to have been overshadowed by many of his contemporaries. Additionally, he has a limited discography, with only one recording as a leader. Despite this, he performed with numerous notable musicians throughout his career, including Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Abbey Lincoln, Stanley Turrentine, and Max Roach. These collaborations solidify his role as a significant musician in the lineage of jazz trumpeters.

How Photographs Infringe, Terry S. Kogan Apr 2017

How Photographs Infringe, Terry S. Kogan

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Courts and commentators have lavished attention on the question of what makes a photograph original and entitled to copyright protection. Far less attention has been devoted to the issue of how photographs infringe. This is the first Article to systematically explore the different ways in which a photograph can steal intellectual property. Photographs can infringe in two ways: by replication and by imitation. A photograph infringes by replication when, without permission, a photographer points her camera directly at a copyright-protected work—a sculpture, a painting, another photograph—and clicks the shutter. A photograph can also infringe by imitation. In such cases, the …

Paintings Of War, Museums Of Memory, Laura G. Waters Apr 2017

Paintings Of War, Museums Of Memory, Laura G. Waters

Student Publications

This paper examines the artists sent to the Western Front under Britain’s official war artists initiative. The government sought to utilize artwork for propagandistic purposes, and to foster emotional connection between civilian and soldier. However, the growth of the initiative to include some ninety artists complicated this. The experiences of the artists and the truths revealed to them by the conflict were vastly different, and examination of them as a whole does little to elucidate the character of the war itself. What this paper seeks to do, therefore, is examine three artists - Sir William Orpen, Lieutenant Paul Nash, and …

The Dido Story In Accounts Of Early Modern European Imperialism— An Anthology, Andrew Newman Apr 2017

The Dido Story In Accounts Of Early Modern European Imperialism— An Anthology, Andrew Newman

Department of English Faculty Publications

This anthology of excerpts from histories and travel accounts composed during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries features representations of indigenous oral traditions about the founding of European colonies in Sri Lanka, Melaka, Gujarat, Cambodia, Manila, Jakarta, Taiwan, New York and the Cape of Good Hope. According to these accounts, the colonists first requested as much land as the hide of an ox could cover, and then cut that hide into strips and claimed all the land they could encircle. The “ox-hide measure” is a widely-attested folkloric motif. The introduction, however, questions assumptions about the reliability of oral traditions and …

Engaging Lbgtq Issues: It’S Still Complicated, Gary F. Sehorn Dr.

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Public school administrators deal with a range of culture war conflicts on a regular basis, and LBGTQ issues are particularly challenging. When I joined my Christian university’s faculty after a long career working as an Evangelical administrator in public schools, I looked forward to shifting from experiencing these conflicts as a public school administrator to equipping others to handle them. Instead, the challenges have become even more complicated.
