Totality And Infinity—Nationalism And The Face: An Ethnographic Exploration In The Republic Of Turkey And State Of Israel, Charles Phifer Nicholson Jr. Apr 2016

Totality And Infinity—Nationalism And The Face: An Ethnographic Exploration In The Republic Of Turkey And State Of Israel, Charles Phifer Nicholson Jr.

Student Scholarship

This paper argues that the historical roots and current manifestations of secular and religious nationalism in the Republic of Turkey and the State of Israel are well understood in light of Emmanuel Levinas’ concept of totality. Furthermore, as discovered through ethnographic research collected concerning the lived experiences of ethnic and religious minorities in these nations, it posits that the best response to these all-encompassing, exclusive worldviews is found in the reality of the human face, as conceptualized by Levinas in connection with his notion of infinity.

The foundation and primary source of this project is ethnographic research collected in the …

Language Lessons: Gender-Based Material Signifiers Of Social Intent In Better Off Dead, Elizabeth Brady Apr 2016

Language Lessons: Gender-Based Material Signifiers Of Social Intent In Better Off Dead, Elizabeth Brady

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

While there is significant evidence of Lévi-Strauss’s model of women as material signifiers of male intent present in Better Off Dead, two characters undercut the absoluteness of this theory. Monique freely dwelled outside of the realm of the system, indicating that there are alternate models. Lane’s willingness to and success in denying the system and departing from it indicates that even those within the system are not inevitably bound to the tenets of the theory.

Uncovering America’S Horror Story: A Content And Critical Analysis Of American Horror Story., Jessica Maio

Honors Projects in Communication

The popular television series American Horror Story has captivated millions of Americans with its shocking and twisted plotlines that never fail to surprise. Perhaps one of the reasons that the show has become so popular is that it uses the horror genre as a way to explore controversial topics. The purpose of this project is to examine the controversial topics that are presented in American Horror Society and compare them with the current views of mainstream society to determine whether the show primarily reflects the views of the larger society or challenges them. In other words, how does American Horror …

German Women In The Wild West: Contradiction In Post-Wwii Gender Roles, Romy Franks Apr 2016

German Women In The Wild West: Contradiction In Post-Wwii Gender Roles, Romy Franks

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

While postwar German women were portrayed as gritty and strong from their lived experiences, West German newspapers articles reiterated the contradictory roles proffered to women in German society. Rather than speaking up against the genre’s masculine dominance, popular western novels, films, and the press continued to reinforce widely held opinions and norms by encouraging women to be content with the ideal female character offered them.

The Scientific Conquest Of New Mexico: Local Legacies Of The Manhattan Project 1942-2015, Lucie Anne Genay Apr 2016

The Scientific Conquest Of New Mexico: Local Legacies Of The Manhattan Project 1942-2015, Lucie Anne Genay

American Studies ETDs

In the initial scoping phase of this research project, the main question I used for guidance was "to what extent and how did the Manhattan Project impact New Mexico and New Mexicans?" My first objective was to assess the magnitude of the state's transformation before addressing the other questions that soon ensued from this original reflection. A brief historical review of the state's transformation will introduce these questions, and comparing pre-World War II and post-Cold War New Mexico will justify the term "revolutionized" I used above. This dissertation retraces the story of this scientific colonization from the point of view …

National Identity, Historical Narratives, And The Fate Of Poland In World War Ii, Ziven K. Chinburg

Honors Projects, History

Abstract

This paper explores the fate of Poland during, and immediately after, the Second World War and examines the question of Western betrayal of Poland. This paper looks into why some Poles felt, and continue to feel, a sense of betrayal by their allies during the war. The main focus of this paper is how the Poles came to understand their fate and position in the world during and after World War Two. The thesis of this paper is that Poles define their national narrative in the modern era as glorious victimhood and that this definition of glorious victimhood is …

Sexual Morality And Owning Our Own Bodies, Sarah E. Foreman Apr 2016

Sexual Morality And Owning Our Own Bodies, Sarah E. Foreman

Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest

In our current age of “hook-up cultures” and premarital sex, the issue of sexual morality in our society is one that must be addressed. As the younger generations become sexually active at earlier times in their lives, we need to discuss appropriate views of sexual activity and the moral limitations of sexual acts. Conventional sexual morality will tell us that sex outside of marriage is immoral. Another sexual ethic might claim that sex without love is not morally permissible. However, in today’s changing and ever more liberal society, it is important for us to come to terms with a new …

Cultural Studies, Pedagogy And Jane Eyre, Kaitlyn R. Berube Apr 2016

Cultural Studies, Pedagogy And Jane Eyre, Kaitlyn R. Berube

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The field of cultural studies is one that has received much academic attention. However, a vast majority of the research applies to higher education and college, with occasional forays into foreign teaching and writing classes. The idea of cultural studies teaching as it applies to secondary education is almost completely unexplored, especially the ways in which it can be placed into practice. The lack of study in this field is a serious problem due to the positive effects cultural studies can have on the critical thinking skills of students. Keeping cultural studies locked behind the gate of higher education keeps …

“A Tool Knows Exactly How It Is Meant To Be Handled”: Posthumanism And Female Agency In The Works Of Milan Kundera, Brennah F. Hutchison Apr 2016

“A Tool Knows Exactly How It Is Meant To Be Handled”: Posthumanism And Female Agency In The Works Of Milan Kundera, Brennah F. Hutchison

Student Theses and Dissertations

In order to demonstrate the way his female characters rhetorically share agency with biological matter and inanimate objects within the social constructions of his novels, my thesis aims to reveal how the works of Milan Kundera can be explored through a posthumanist, feminist lens. Because several of the female characters are ontologically diminished to their female body by societal constructs, they are well aware that the body is not lacking rhetorical determination despite it being objectified due to gender binaries. Kundera’s female characters are able to surpass the social constructs more efficaciously than their male counterparts because they are more …

Wives' Gain And Husbands' Losses: The Imbalance Of Marital Power In Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire And Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Kaitlin Gates Apr 2016

Wives' Gain And Husbands' Losses: The Imbalance Of Marital Power In Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire And Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Kaitlin Gates

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper explores how playwright Tennessee Williams depicts marriage within two of his most central plays, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and examines the power dynamics between the married couples Stanley and Stella, Brick and Maggie, and Big Daddy and Big Mama. Through a discussion of how their respective husbands use age and sexuality to manipulate the younger wives, Stella and Maggie, I argue that it is only through the decline of the husband, in this case Big Daddy, that wives gain any marital power. These disproportionate power relationships ultimately reflect Williams' own experiences …
