The Unintended Legacy Of Hellenism: The Development And Dissemination Of The Buddha Image, Chukyi Kyaping
The Unintended Legacy Of Hellenism: The Development And Dissemination Of The Buddha Image, Chukyi Kyaping
History Honors Papers
This paper traces the development and evolution of the Buddha image from the first century CE in Gandhara to the fifth century CE in Luoyang, China and discusses the circumstances that allowed the image to adapt to different cultural environments. The emergence of the Buddha image marked a significant shift in the perception of the Buddha himself, through which Buddhism had effectively transformed from a philosophy into a religion.
Due to the syncretic nature of the Gandhari region, the Buddha image incorporated elements from multiple cultures, most notably from the Hellenistic artistic tradition. The dissemination of the Buddha image, traced …

The Persistence Of Gnosticism: Credit And The Apocalypse, Molly A. Wallace
The Persistence Of Gnosticism: Credit And The Apocalypse, Molly A. Wallace
Religious Studies Honors Projects
This paper follows Hans Blumenberg’s argument that gnosticism persisted throughout the Middle Ages due to Augustine of Hippo’s accidental incorporation of gnostic eschatology into his theory of voluntas. Gnosticism is a radically dualist structure originating in Late Antiquity that splits the cosmos between corrupt matter and a divine spirit. I take issue with Blumenberg’s assertion that modernity has truly rid itself of a concern with spirit, or transcendence. By doing so, I am able to take his argument to its logical conclusion: gnosticism persists today through the capitalist descendent of spirit—value. Moreover, I argue that the …
One Man's Reaction To Nato Expansion, Jamie M. Putnam
One Man's Reaction To Nato Expansion, Jamie M. Putnam
International Relations Honors Papers
Using the policy of NATO expansion and the events of the Ukraine crisis, this paper examines President Vladimir Putin’s impact on Russian foreign policy and analyzes the extent to which his personality and personal interests have shaped Russia’s actions. In doing so, it seems that Russia as an actor on the international stage cannot be understood without considering Putin’s role in creating what Russia is today.
Bosnia: Doomed To Failure Or A Rising Hope?, Caitlin V. Moore
Bosnia: Doomed To Failure Or A Rising Hope?, Caitlin V. Moore
Politics Honors Papers
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country that suffers from a lack of a national identity as it has three main ethnic groups, Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs, who are all fighting for power. After the Bosnian war, which lasted from 1992-1995 and involved genocide that was committed against the Bosniaks, the ethnic divisions were further entrenched. These divisions were not helped by the provisions of the Dayton Peace Accords, which was the peace settlement that brought an end to the war. Dayton created an ethnocracy within Bosnia that places more importance on ethnic groups than national identity. In order to see …

Story Of Long-Lost Adopted Hero Lives On, John M. Rudy
Story Of Long-Lost Adopted Hero Lives On, John M. Rudy
Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
Buried somewhere inside of what we now call the "Schultz House" is a relic of a long-lost adopted hero of Adams County. The house, which stands on the corner of West Confederate Avenue and the Fairfield Road in Gettysburg, started its life as the pet project of Herman Haupt. When he lived here Haupt was a simple, unassuming engineer. He taught at Pennsylvania College. He ran a girls' seminary atop Oak Ridge. He did contract work for local railroads designing bridges and causeways. [excerpt]

Lingua Franca: An Analysis Of Globalization And Language Evolution, Abigail Watson
Lingua Franca: An Analysis Of Globalization And Language Evolution, Abigail Watson
Honors Projects
This project details the evolution of languages and how globalization and advances in communication have effected smaller language groups. A world community in which communication is standardized by a Lingua Franca is in most cases harmful for isolated language groups without many speakers. The extinction of language is harmful for human society and culture, and there are many different ways to help prevent language extinction.
This project includes an essay, an animation, six illustrations, and a coloring book that all relate to endangered languages.

Florentine recalls Myers loaning her 18th Century cook books from his collection for a History 290 research project she worked on and continued as an intern at the David Davis Mansion. In recalling that incident, she reflects on how Myers' willingness to loan his books "allowed his collection to do something" other than sit on a shelf. It could teach something to people he shared it with. She recalls Myers using his famous "do good" comment at Freshman Convocation. The book title is "Managing Clover Lawn: From Ingredients to Enjoyment: A Guide to the Kitchen of Sarah Davis and the …

Effort And Ethics, Edward J. Lee
Effort And Ethics, Edward J. Lee
Philosophy Honors Papers
In this paper, I start by describing two categories into which effort can be divided. The first category I call objective effort, which refers to the external factors associated with an action; the second I call subjective effort, which deals with the internal psychological or mental effort required to bring oneself to perform an action. I then track my intuitions about how objective effort and subjective effort are relevant to the moral evaluations of actions and agents, and further develop this descriptive account by explaining these intuitions normatively through the lenses of contractualism and virtue ethics. Having given my account …
Music In Advertising: An Overview Of Jingles, Popular Music And The Emotional Impact Of Music In Advertising, Jeremy Jia Le Ng
Music In Advertising: An Overview Of Jingles, Popular Music And The Emotional Impact Of Music In Advertising, Jeremy Jia Le Ng
Senior Honors Theses
Music is used extensively in advertising. Thus, it is surprising that so little research has been conducted on the emotional effects of music in advertising. Industry research has focused on the informational processing model, which measures how effective an advertisement is based on recall and understanding. However, beyond influencing thoughts and behavior, music tugs at the heart and leaves a lasting mark.
This thesis gives an overview of how music has been used in advertising, and delves into the emotional impacts of music in advertising. This thesis also explores the creative process behind choosing the right music for an advertisement, …

Geopolitics Of The 2016 Australian Defense White Paper And Its Predecessors, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Australia released the newest edition of its Defense White Paper, describing Canberra’s current and emerging national security priorities, on February 25, 2016. This continues a tradition of issuing defense white papers since 1976. This work will examine and analyze the contents of this document as well as previous Australian defense white papers, scholarly literature, and political statements assessing their geopolitical significance. It will also examine public input into Australian defense white papers and the emerging role of social media in this public involvement. It concludes by evaluating whether Australia has the political will and economic resources necessary to fulfill its …

Drew knew that if he had the power to pick the soundtrack of his heaven he would choose the drop of the beat as his Cessna’s tires touching down on a landing. Faye did not put much stock in heaven, but she liked the idea of spending eternity bathed in colors, ones she could fathom now and new ones her mortal eyes couldn’t see. For Louis all he wanted was the feeling of a warm hand in his leading him to the afterlife. Drew, Faye, nor Louis planned on dying any time soon but for varying reasons they knew death …

Religious Involvement And Psychological Stress As Predictors Of Dental Health, Yung Y. Chen, Anty Lam
Religious Involvement And Psychological Stress As Predictors Of Dental Health, Yung Y. Chen, Anty Lam
Publications and Research
Religious involvement has been linked to many indicators of health, including longevity. Previous research has identified psychological stress as a possible mediator for the positive effects of religion on health. Fewer studies have investigated the potential relationship between these psychosocial factors and dental health. This study examined religious involvement, stress, and dental health in a community sample. Participants included 150 community residents who received dental care as part of the study. Results indicated a significant positive association between religiousness and dental health, and a negative association between stress and dental health. These findings encourage further research on religion, stress, and …
