The Art Of War: Battles Won And Wars Lost, Mark W. Dekay
The Art Of War: Battles Won And Wars Lost, Mark W. Dekay
Young Historians Conference
Sun Tzu is one of the most influential military figures of all time; his treatise The Art of War provides the framework for waging an effective war. War is much more than a game of numbers or pawns on a board, Sun Tzu identifies the underlying factors that determine the outcome of every war, past or present. Follow The Art of War and victory is ensured, but if you ignore Sun Tzu defeat is inevitable. Many wars throughout history are proof of this statement, but there is no greater example than America's defeat in Vietnam. Despite having a much more …

Charles University: A History Of Revolution, Matous Komers
Young Historians Conference
Although the students of Prague’s Charles University are mostly remembered for starting the Velvet Revolution in the 20th Century, the university’s history of revolution started nearly seven hundred years earlier with a young priest named Jan Hus. Hus started a movement of religious reform called Hussitism, which laid the groundwork for the Protestant Reformation. “Charles University: A History of Revolution” explores the impact and influence that Charles University had on the development and spread of the Hussite Reformation and Hus’ massive theological shift.

The Policy Regarding Iran: Circumstances Surrounding The Allied Invasion In 1941, Caitlin N. Curtis
The Policy Regarding Iran: Circumstances Surrounding The Allied Invasion In 1941, Caitlin N. Curtis
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
This paper examines the conjoined Allied occupation of Iran during World War II and the impact the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union had on a new, weak nation. The terms of the occupation were written with the best intentions for Iran but were eventually disregarded. This mixture of a poor execution of treaty terms as well as British, Soviet, and American interests within Iran destroyed the unity it possessed and allowed Russia to extend massive influence over the newly destabilized country. The British wanted to maintain their oil concessions. The Russians desired a warm water port and …

The Tides Of Life (Convene Ceo Summit), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
Delivered at the Convene CEO Summit, this speech asks how Christian business leaders might apply their faith in work settings. In particular, Pollard notes that servant leadership -- while not always overtly Christian -- is oftentimes the primary means of actualizing Christian values in the corporate firm.

An Anthropological Exploration Of Latino Immigrant Identity In Contemporary Migration Literature, Laura Hoppe
An Anthropological Exploration Of Latino Immigrant Identity In Contemporary Migration Literature, Laura Hoppe
Honors Capstone Projects
Immigration remains one of the hottest topics of debate in the United States. As a country constructed by immigrants and home to over one million newly admitted immigrants each year, the immigration phenomenon has contributed extensively to the multiculturalism seen in the United States today. While many immigrant groups have historically lived in marginalization, the 21st century has proven especially difficult for Latino immigrants--those from Spanish and Portuguese-speaking Latin America. As the current largest immigrant group, Latinos have received a lot of backlash and discrimination in the U.S. Many of these immigrants, whether they immigrate to the U.S. temporarily or …
Las Jefas De Sudamérica: Coalition Party Discipline In Brazil, Chile, And Argentina, Adán S. Martínez
Las Jefas De Sudamérica: Coalition Party Discipline In Brazil, Chile, And Argentina, Adán S. Martínez
Latin American Studies Honors Projects
Political coalitions play an essential role in governance in Latin America. Scholars have analyzed policy changes as a way of measuring condition under which political actors govern. What factors contribute to coalitional stability? Based on analysis of three presidential administrations- Dilma Rousseff of Brazil (2010-2014), Michelle Bachelet of Chile (2006-2010), and Cristina Fernández of Argentina (2007-2015)- I argue that fiscal constraints, power centralization, institutional incentives, and social movement strength shape coalitional stability between the executive and legislative branches. This project concludes that while economic conditions affect coalitional stability, other factors including the distribution of power and grassroots movements play an …

Psychometric Properties Of The Santa Clara Brief Compassion Scale, Thomas G. Plante, Jesus Mejia
Psychology
The Santa Clara Brief Compassion Scale (SCBCS) is a five-item scale intended to operationalize and measure compassion. Santa Clara University has been administering the SCBCS, along with other demographic questions, to all new entering as well as exiting graduating students for the past decade. Previous research has utilized compassion scores and demographic data collected from these surveys in both between and within-subject designs to examine compassion among these undergraduate students. The purpose of the current study was to examine the reliability and validity of the SCBCS through various psychometric tests utilizing 6,763 responses that have been collected in recent years. …

Reframing The Ethics Of Care: Implications For Moral Epistemology In Bioethics, Lukas E. Chandler
Reframing The Ethics Of Care: Implications For Moral Epistemology In Bioethics, Lukas E. Chandler
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The paper investigates the challenges of knowledge in the physician-patient relationship, both the patient's lack of expert medical knowledge and understanding of his or her medical condition as well as the physician's ignorance of the patient's values and belief systems. Employing an ethic of care, the aim is to bring attention to this dual epistemological difficulty in the patient-provider relationship. The ethics of care provides a lens for understanding, establishing empathy for the patient, and seeking methods in which the patient may become empowered. Channeling the ideas of Dr. Edmund Pellegrino, the paper explicates the argument advanced by Virginia Ashby Sharpe …

"...Anything Else?": An Examination Of Prolonged Pauses In Classroom Discussion, Amanda Halprin
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
In the linguistic field, silences are typically studied as barriers between utterances. However, silences can also be studied as independent utterances. This paper examines silence in the latter context by analyzing an hour-long audio recording of an in-class discussion that took place during a senior linguistics seminar at the University of Mary Washington. Specifically, this paper looks at the role of silence as an independent utterance within classroom discussion. The 33 silences (referred to as "prolonged" silences within the paper) range in length from 10.01 seconds to 92.99 seconds. The analysis of the data is divided into three sections: first …

We're All Mad Here: Anti-Capitalist Criticism In Arden Of Faversham, Eileen G. Settlemyer
We're All Mad Here: Anti-Capitalist Criticism In Arden Of Faversham, Eileen G. Settlemyer
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This essay looks at the portrayal of capitalism in the anonymously written Renaissance play Arden of Faversham. As early modern England shifted to a capitalist economy, the nefarious means that almost all of the major characters employ in order to take advantage of opportunities for social mobility criticizes the greed and brutality that emerging capitalist values encouraged. While many critics criticize Arden for his greed as a landlord, he does not conform to the literary stereotype of the period for greedy landlords, allowing a broader reading of the play. All the deaths at the end of the play, both …
