Sweeney Todd, Jay Cranford, Michelle Crouch

2010-2019: All Shows

Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to 19th century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett's luck sharply shifts when Todd's thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up, and the carnage has only just begun!

Uncertain Rights Against Defense, Bas Van Der Vossen Apr 2016

Uncertain Rights Against Defense, Bas Van Der Vossen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

In this essay, I defend a theory of liability to defensive force. The theory contains two elements. The first is a dual Lockean-inspired condition. The second aims to make this first condition consistent with problems arising from uncertainty. Drawing on recent work by Michael Zimmerman, I argue that the rights-based condition should be made sensitive to the evidence available to defenders.

Small Houses, Big Ideas, Caroline Jean Winn Apr 2016

Small Houses, Big Ideas, Caroline Jean Winn

Student Scholarship

Architecture is the unavoidable art form.It permeates everyday life and wholly shapes lifestyle; it reflects culture and location as well as the economic power of a region. At its core, architecture is a testament to its surroundings, its design naturally requiring a series of decisions regarding space, form, and use – decisions born within a crucial and telling social context, decisions that quickly reveal the social climate of an era. Indisputably, architecture serves as a lens through which scholars can peer into a time past.

In the course of this thesis, I will examine how the designs of half …

The Consequences Of Failing: A Memoir, Olivia M. Zajac Apr 2016

The Consequences Of Failing: A Memoir, Olivia M. Zajac

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Failing is part of our human nature. I have never met a person who has never failed at something. Sometimes when I look back at my failures I feel like crying, and other times I laugh at the mistakes that I have made. But no matter the type of failure I have suffered, I have learned one thing. Failures, along with successes, have shaped me into the person I am today. When I fail, I often fall. But each fall is a chance for me to get back up. I don’t plan to stop failing any time soon.

Just like …

A Midsummer Night's Dream Apr 2016

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Taylor Theatre Playbills

Taylor Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Performed April 29-30 and May 6-7, 2016 at the Mitchell Theatre. Mischief meets merriment in this fresh re-imagining of Shakespeare's most popular romantic comedy.

In just one night, four magical stories are cleverly woven together: the marriage of the Athenian duke to the Amazon queen; the battle of the king and queen of the fairies; the follies of four lovers in a forest; and the hilarious antics of amateur actors staging a play. Enter a vibrant world where fairies fly overhead, a donkey bursts into song, and love potion makes your …

Born Digital Preservation And The Power Of Nostalgia, Emily Ann Pilat Apr 2016

Born Digital Preservation And The Power Of Nostalgia, Emily Ann Pilat

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This work of segmented creative nonfiction examines nostalgia as a force that can impact and aid the preservation processes with regard to born digital works. Through research and personal accounts these segments work in conjunction with one another to evaluate the current state and potential future of digital preservation. Nostalgia in relation to digital technology is studied through concepts such as tech-nostalgia and Skeuomorphism, both of which directly frame digital preservation practices. Unique works of electronic literature are also assessed in relation to challenges in preservation and how the authors, preservationists, as well as audiences respond to the challenges that …

Los Cuentos Que "No Son Cuento": Subjetividad, Corrupción Y "Pornografía" En ¡Oh Gloria Inmarcesible!, Ana María Johnson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

On the 25th of April 2015 in an interview conducted by Dr. Alejandra Jaramillo for the newspaper EL ESPECTADOR, Colombian writer Albalucía Ángel mentioned that in a warehouse in Colombia one would be able to find a hundred thousand copies of a little "secret" book published using the title of the first verse of the Colombian national anthem --Oh Gloria Inmarcesible! The book had been deem pornographic by the national Colombian press. This particular interview elicited an infinite number of questions in my mind, some of which inspired this research project. Through various research sources I have been able …

"Sounds Like A Spy Story": The Espionage Thrillers Of Alfred Hitchcock In Twentieth-Century English And American Society, From The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) To Topaz (1969), Kimberly M. Humphries Apr 2016

"Sounds Like A Spy Story": The Espionage Thrillers Of Alfred Hitchcock In Twentieth-Century English And American Society, From The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) To Topaz (1969), Kimberly M. Humphries

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Throughout a career that lasted for almost half a century, Sir Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) directed fifty-three feature films, many of which are still watched and regarded today as epitomes of classic English and American film. One of his most revisited genres is the espionage thriller, which compromises twelve out of the fifty-three films he directed in England and the United States and includes two short films. In analyzing fourteen films, beginning with the English-made The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and concluding with the American Topaz (1969), this paper argues that Hitchcock's spy thrillers are products of their time …

The Forgotten Faces Of Operation Valkyrie: Major-General Henning Von Tresckow And General Friedrich Olbricht In The July 20 Plot To Assassinate Hitler, Kathleen Michelle Maclndoe Apr 2016

The Forgotten Faces Of Operation Valkyrie: Major-General Henning Von Tresckow And General Friedrich Olbricht In The July 20 Plot To Assassinate Hitler, Kathleen Michelle Maclndoe

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg's name has become synonymous with the July 20, 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler and topple the Nazi regime. However, the efforts of two other men, Major-General Henning von Tresckow and General Friedrich Olbricht, made the execution of this coup possible, and the Colonel merely stepped into the framework they established. These two men were the primary, behind-the-scenes architects of the coup due to their experience in the opposition leading up to July 20, which included prior assassination attempts, knowledge of bombs, their guiding hands through the revision of Operation Valkyrie, and the network of contacts they …

The Closet Conservative: Oscar Wilde's Inadvertent Adherence To Traditional Gender Roles, Rachel Cote Apr 2016

The Closet Conservative: Oscar Wilde's Inadvertent Adherence To Traditional Gender Roles, Rachel Cote

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Typically considered a proto-feminist, Wilde occasionally lets slip a conservative ideology in his adherence to traditional gender binaries within the confines of the romantic sphere. The internalized binary set Wilde most heavily employs in certain writings relates to Artifice/Reality, where men are associated with Artifice and women with Reality. In specific scenes of The Picture of Dorian Gray, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde explores romantic dynamics under the duress of the genders' diverging preference for elements of deception and artificiality in heteronormative romantic relationships. This scheme inherently reinforces the patriarchy and sexism of …

Emily Dickinson: Myth Of The Perpetual Child, Rebecca Faust Apr 2016

Emily Dickinson: Myth Of The Perpetual Child, Rebecca Faust

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Critics have often described poems of the enigmatic Emily Dickinson, the "Myth of Amherst," as being suitable only for children's literature. In addition to having a well-known diminutive appearance, Dickinson exhibits a poetic playfulness, focuses on simple aspects of Nature, and explores faith and childish subjects and concerns which has led to a narrow understanding and even dismissal of her works as being decidedly "unsophisticated." This paper contends that the use of a child's voice or point-of-view is an intentional one in order for Dickinson to reconcile the conflicting ideologies of childhood, especially relating to the tenets of her orderly …
