Naming And Name Changing In Postcolonial Madagascar, Denis Regnier

Pacific Studies

This paper examines the cultural significance of name changing among the Betsileo of Madagascar, highlighting its dual role in shaping individual identity and reinforcing collective continuity. This practice fosters a dynamic interplay between memory and legacy, as names circulate between honoring ancestors and acknowledging descendants. Despite the fluidity of personal names over time, the group maintains a visible sense of continuity through this ritualized naming system. The study argues that name changing is a vital mechanism for the ongoing construction of personhood and the temporal cohesion of the descent group.

Toward A Phenomenological Poetics : The Interplay Of Philosophy And Poetry In William Butler Yeats’S “The Tower” And “Meditations In Time Of Civil War”, Peter Michael Lang May 2016

Toward A Phenomenological Poetics : The Interplay Of Philosophy And Poetry In William Butler Yeats’S “The Tower” And “Meditations In Time Of Civil War”, Peter Michael Lang

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis examines the interplay of poetry and philosophy in the work of William Butler Yeats as it serves to ground a symbolic structure that challenges time. Yeats, like his contemporaries, was influenced by Walter Pater, who made it possible to articulate with passion a sense of being despite life’s tumult and upheaval, to instantiate and develop in a moment a complete, poetic soul. It is in this same spirit that, much later, Gaston Bachelard would approach poetic memory for its harmonizing value. The works of Pater and Bachelard thus ground a phenomenological reading of Yeats’s poetry, in particular “The …

Dance And Well-Being In Older Adult Communities: Exploring Efficacy As A Mediator, Beth M. Mcgowan May 2016

Dance And Well-Being In Older Adult Communities: Exploring Efficacy As A Mediator, Beth M. Mcgowan

Honors Thesis

As the population of older adults expands, it becomes increasingly important to develop effective interventions to ensure high levels of well-being. Previous research in a variety of populations has shown that dance produces broad benefits including improving physical mobility, social relationships, autonomy, and self-image. Given this, the present study attempted to clarify the mechanisms through which dance might lead to these improvements. Specifically, this research examined the role of self-efficacy, or beliefs that one can accomplish certain tasks, have in explaining the psychological benefits of dance. I hypothesized that when dance is a social activity it instills a sense of …

Well written and persuasive, Jason Ruiz gives readers a beautiful book on Americans’ literal and figurative image of Mexico under and immediately after Dıaz. A history of pictures rather than a pictorial history, Americans in the Treasure House has great depth and will be useful to scholars of U.S.–Mexican relations, travel, and the gendered politics of empire.

Escape From Amherst: Emily Dickinson’S Life Of Freedom, Maria Whitcomb May 2016

Escape From Amherst: Emily Dickinson’S Life Of Freedom, Maria Whitcomb

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Through Escape from Amherst: Emily Dickinson’s Life of Freedom, I endeavored to create an immersive art song recital experience through which I explored the character of Emily Dickinson, hopefully rendering her ambiguous, iconic character somewhat more comprehensive to modern day audiences. Enclosed in the following chapters, please find the formal research I performed in examining Emily Dickinson’s character, an explanation of my own artistic journey, the program that I distributed to audiences during the concert (containing analyses of the Emily Dickinson texts that I performed), stage directions illustrating actor/singer intention and movement onstage, and lastly an explanation of my …

Unusual Children: Queerishness And Strange Growth In A Wrinkle In Time And The Giver, Olivia Morris May 2016

Unusual Children: Queerishness And Strange Growth In A Wrinkle In Time And The Giver, Olivia Morris

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This project examines two different pieces of modern children’s literature, Madeline L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time and Lois Lowry’s The Giver, in terms of their protagonists’ respective strange identities. I begin with Katherine Stockton’s theory of sideways growth, which outlines the unusualness often found in child protagonist. I use Stockton’s work as a jumping off point to examine the queerishness of two protagonists, L’Engle’s Meg Murray and Lowry’s Jonas. Meg is unfeminine, and her experiences with language and definitions defy gender binaries and easy definitions; throughout the course of the novel, she learns to embrace her “flaws” (her unfeminine, …

A Spy Of His Own Confession: A Revolution In American Espionage, Cole Ellenbogen May 2016

A Spy Of His Own Confession: A Revolution In American Espionage, Cole Ellenbogen

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The most well known spies are usually the ones who were caught. But what about those who took their secret lives to the grave?

In the summer of 1778, arguably one of the biggest players in the United States’ fight for independence was released from a rebel-controlled prison in Connecticut. Abraham Woodhull, arrested earlier in the year for smuggling, was offered his freedom in exchange for his loyalty to the continental army. His friend, Major Benjamin Tallmadge, was looking to replace the dated espionage methods employed by his superior officer and contentious rival.

In just a few short years, the …

Dance Of Light And Loss, Clark Lunberry May 2016

Dance Of Light And Loss, Clark Lunberry

English Faculty Research and Scholarship

On a bright and sunny Sunday afternoon in the Ogikubo district of western Tokyo, in the dark basement of Saburo Teshigawara's dance studio and performance space known as Karas Apparatus, an audience gathered to see the dancer's newest solo performance, Fool. The uncurtained stage in the small theatre was empty and unlit, the stage itself far larger, perhaps three times larger than that tight space reserved for those attending the event. What lights there were faintly illuminated only the slightly raised rows of cushions upon which the forty of us in the audience took our seats, waiting for the performance …

The Queer Child And Haut Bourgeois Domesticity : Berthe Morisot And Mary Cassatt., Jessica Cresseveur May 2016

The Queer Child And Haut Bourgeois Domesticity : Berthe Morisot And Mary Cassatt., Jessica Cresseveur

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1970s, feminist art historians have extensively treated Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot. In particular, focusing on class-bound womanhood and domesticity, Griselda Pollock, Linda Nochlin, and Anne Higonnet have provided compelling psychoanalytic, Marxist, and semiotic analyses, seemingly exhausting all potentials for any further historical exploration of these artists. Yet, to date, investigations into the significance of the queer (deviations from normative sociocultural codes of gender identity, sexuality, and reproduction) in the works of Cassatt and Morisot have not been conducted. In this dissertation, queer theory complements the existing scholarship that has focused on the significance of women as mothers …

Identities Without Origins : Fat/Trans Subjectivity And The Possibilities Of Plurality., Mc Lampe May 2016

Identities Without Origins : Fat/Trans Subjectivity And The Possibilities Of Plurality., Mc Lampe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project draws upon the work of Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, and Donna Haraway to critically analyze the political power and utility of origin stories as they are used within discourses of identity. I specifically examine the dominant cultural and counter-origin stories of transgender and fat bodies and argue that the counter origin stories constructed by both trans and fat studies/activism continue to engage with norms that regulate identity. These regulations create an impossible situation for individuals who are both trans and fat as they are not recognized as intelligible subjects within either category due to their lack of appropriate …

Kentucky's First Statesman : George Nicholas And The Founding Of The Commonwealth., Benjamin Michael Gies May 2016

Kentucky's First Statesman : George Nicholas And The Founding Of The Commonwealth., Benjamin Michael Gies

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In late 1789, Colonel George Nicholas arrived in the Kentucky District from eastern Virginia. Nicholas’s political astuteness prompted his swift rise to prominence in the Kentucky District’s political affairs. In 1792 Nicholas asserted himself as the Kentucky Constitution of 1792’s primary author. Nicholas’s Kentucky Constitution of 1792 mirrored the federal Constitution of 1787 that had earlier been rejected by Kentuckians in the 1788 Virginia Ratifying Convention. The Kentucky Constitution of 1792 placed the Kentucky District square within the ethos of the Anglo – American constitutional tradition and secured the proposed Commonwealth of Kentucky’s separation from the district’s “parent-state,” the Commonwealth …

New Game+, Bobby Rich May 2016

New Game+, Bobby Rich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a creative thesis composed of two components: 1) a critical introduction that contextualizes and supports the project of the second component, 2) a book manuscript of poetry. The project explores genre concerns of poetry by developing experimental prose poems that incorporate video game themes, language, and instructional writing. The project presents the interplay of the notions of control and failure to examine the borders between simulation (games) and reality (the world outside of games). The poems are constructed around the idea of designed failure, through which, the introduction argues, their status as poetry is inherently threatened, and they …

A Machiavellian Christian: Analyzing The Political Theology Of 'The Prince', John G. Addison May 2016

A Machiavellian Christian: Analyzing The Political Theology Of 'The Prince', John G. Addison

History Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper attempts to reconsider the role that Christian religion played in the political philosophy of Niccolò Machiavelli, focusing specifically on The Prince. Despite regnant popular and scholastic opinion, this paper posits that Machiavelli's ideological foundation falls squarely into the theological and moral traditions and scripture of Christianity, and is thus an inseparable element of the political theory of Machiavelli. Further, this work seeks to illustrate the presence of orthodox political and religious beliefs contained within The Prince and throughout the Machiavellian corpus, focusing on the socio-political milieu of Renaissance Florence and the broader traditions of humanist thought. In …

The Meaning Of The Soldier: In The Year Of The Pig And Hearts And Minds, Laura Browder May 2016

The Meaning Of The Soldier: In The Year Of The Pig And Hearts And Minds, Laura Browder

English Faculty Publications

In the Year of the Pig (1968) and Hearts and Minds (1974)—the first an Academy Award nominee, the second an Academy Award winner—are the two best-known Vietnam War documentaries of their time. They are works that could hardly be more different—one a cool, intellectual take on the origins and then-current state of the war, and the second a highly emotional appeal to end the war. By viewing them together it is possible not only to connect the dots between the contrasting intellectual and filmic traditions from which each emerged, but also to see, through the viewpoints of each film, how …

The Artistic Legacy Of Georgia O’Keeffe, Michelle L. Knutson May 2016

The Artistic Legacy Of Georgia O’Keeffe, Michelle L. Knutson

Senior Theses

The work of American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986), was considered to be unique and revolutionary in her own time, but she ultimately achieved a prominent position in the history of art. The enduring inspiration of this important artist is demonstrated by an investigation of key artistic motifs as well as her legacy via the discussion of artists who have been influenced by her: Alfred Stieglitz, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and the author, Michelle L. Knutson.
