- Intratumoral Therapies Offer Novel Cancer Treatment Approach: Injecting cancer treatments such as vaccines and genetically modified bacteria and viruses directly into tumors may shrink or destroy the tumors and stimulate an immune response that attacks tumor cells. These treatments have shown promise in clinical trials, and newer trials are exploring whether such treatments can augment the effectiveness of immunotherapy in patients with metastatic or inoperable disease.

The Power Of A Secret: Secret Societies And The Easter Rising, Sierra M. Harlan
The Power Of A Secret: Secret Societies And The Easter Rising, Sierra M. Harlan
Senior Theses
The Irish Republican Brotherhood (I.R.B.) and the Irish Volunteer Force (I.V.F.) altered Irish Nationalist tactics from Parliamentary supported Home Rule to a republican movement for Irish Independence. The actions of these secret societies between 1900 and 1916, during the Irish Revolutionary period,[1] are the reason that Ireland gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1922. The change from political negotiations by the ineffective Irish Parliamentary Party to the republican movement would never have happened without the Easter Rising of 1916. The centennial anniversary of this Easter Rising makes The Power of a Secret: Ireland’s Secret Societies and the Easter …
“Between The Yes And The No”: Alternative Ontologies And Literary Depictions Of Mysticism In Borges And Mahfouz, David Shane Elder
“Between The Yes And The No”: Alternative Ontologies And Literary Depictions Of Mysticism In Borges And Mahfouz, David Shane Elder
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since the advent of the modern era and the subsequent age of Enlightenment, the rational tradition has enabled the West to assert command of a large area of the globe and its population. While advancing the conditions of living for many, rational structures have also been used to control and repress others. The theosophy of the medieval Islamic mystic Ibn al-ᶜArabī, with its basis in irrational thought, offers a counterpoint to the rational and empirical traditions, the Social orthodoxies to which these epistemologies contribute, and the ontologies with which these epistemologies and orthodoxies are correlated. Yet mystical expression is very …

Introduction: Theorizing The Secular In Tibetan Cultural Worlds, Holly Gayley, Nicole Willock
Introduction: Theorizing The Secular In Tibetan Cultural Worlds, Holly Gayley, Nicole Willock
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This special issue on ‘The Secular in Tibetan Cultural Worlds’ originated in a panel on The Secular in Tibet and Mongolia at the Thirteenth Seminar of the International Association of Tibetan Studies held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in 2013. To contextualize the contributions to this issue, spanning diverse temporal and geographic contexts, this Introduction raises theoretical concerns and discusses contested terminology regarding ‘religion’ and the ‘secular’ in Tibetan discourse. The authors situate local articulations of the secular within broader academic discussions of the varieties of Asian secularisms and offer a key intervention to complicate the secularization thesis and prevailing views of …
Dorjé Tarchin, The Mélong, And The Tibet Mirror Press: Negotiating Discourse On The Religious And The Secular, Nicole Willock
Dorjé Tarchin, The Mélong, And The Tibet Mirror Press: Negotiating Discourse On The Religious And The Secular, Nicole Willock
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Much scholarly attention has been given to the importance of the Mélong, the first Tibetan newspaper, in the discursive formation of Tibetan nationalism; yet in claiming the Mélong as ‘secular’ and ‘modern,’ previous scholarship has also evaded the press’s Christian and colonial roots. This paper investigates the secularization of the Mélong and the Tibet Mirror Press as an historical project, and as a corollary demonstrates the emergence of a vernacular project of secularism that aligned pan-Tibetan national identity with religious pluralism against the threat of communism. As a Tibetan Christian intellectual, the Mélong’s founder Dorjé Tarchin (1890-1976) creatively responded to …

Break The Internet: Gendered Image Manipulation And Political Subject Formation, Sarah Bolden
Break The Internet: Gendered Image Manipulation And Political Subject Formation, Sarah Bolden
Honors College Theses
Image manipulation is ubiquitous: in the twenty-first century, it seems that “everyone knows” that the images presented in the media, from magazine covers to product advertisements, have been edited to seamlessly and effortlessly convey contemporary social norms. The recognition of this image manipulation is evident throughout popular culture: a Google search of “Photoshop fails” will return thousands of articles cataloging the most outrageous retouching disasters.
Redemption Of Man And Nature: Environmentalism Through The Lens Of Mainline Protestants And Conservative Evangelicals, Scottie Glen Hill
Redemption Of Man And Nature: Environmentalism Through The Lens Of Mainline Protestants And Conservative Evangelicals, Scottie Glen Hill
Honors Theses
This thesis addressed the relationship between the environmental movement in America and Protestant Christianity. Currently, there is an assumption that Christians tend to have attitudes that are adverse to environmentalism. This study investigated the origins of the current narratives while analyzing the various factors that have contributed to changes in this dynamic over time. This was done through an analysis of various primary sources from the late 1960s and 1970s, a critical period of time in which environmentalism and Protestant Christianity became inextricably connected. In 1967, amidst a growing environmental movement, Lynn White Jr. released an essay that criticized the …
The Effect Of Gender On The Attitudes Of Undergraduates Toward Young-Earth Creationism After Enrollment In An Origins Course, Sean Vinaja
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Many Christian students graduate from secondary schools and enter Christian colleges with worldviews that are unbiblical or contain unbiblical components, many of which stem from their beliefs regarding origins. Little research has been done to study the effect of gender on the role of a young-earth creationist (YEC) origins course in shaping students’ worldview. Research has shown that males and females respond differently to science and religion instruction; because the origins discussion is an intersection of science and religion, the study of gender’s effect in developing a Bible-based worldview is important so that Christian colleges might more effectively guide their …
Homiletical Discipleship: Developing An Approach To Small Group Study Based On Sunday Morning Exposition, Lance Cole
Homiletical Discipleship: Developing An Approach To Small Group Study Based On Sunday Morning Exposition, Lance Cole
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Jesus promised to make Peter a “fisher of men,” while The Great Commission calls us to make disciples of all nations. The purpose of this project is to create a discipleship approach for the local church that helps teach the church’s members based on the Sunday morning sermon. One disciple making problem is that many people attend a church to spectate and not participate. Some sit for years listening to the pastor preach without having any desire to be an active disciple. Others completely leave the church after a short time. This approach for churches will teach them how to …

Southern culture is defined as phenomena which shape the regional experience and resonate through the lives of individuals native to the US South. Participants in the study that was conducted in Chattanooga, Tennessee consisted of two current English administrators, four current English professors, eight composition students who participated in the Writers@Work program, and two visiting Southern …
Biblical Principles Of Small Group Ministry, Shawn Barr
Biblical Principles Of Small Group Ministry, Shawn Barr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Small group ministry models abound today, and so do the materials that provide the methodology for these models. However, there seems to be a dearth of resources that connect the methods with a theological foundation. This project will demonstrate the need for examining small groups from a theological aspect, and then examine the principles of biblical community as found in Scripture. These principles will then be measured through surveys of at least fifty participants in small group settings from several churches, including the churches where the author was the small group pastor for the last seven years and where he …

Obergefell V. Hodges And Support For Same-Sex Marriage : Changes In National And State Public Opinion., Adria Neal
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Many have argued that Supreme Court decisions on culture war issues, issues that cause conflict between conservative and liberal values, stifle public progression on the very problems they are meant to resolve. They often cite political and electoral backlash following a decision as evidence of this stagnation in opinion. However, this backlash may not be representative of widespread public opinion. In order to understand the relationship between Court decisions and public opinion, changes in opinion on culture war issues following a Supreme Court ruling must be measured. This study utilizes national and state survey data in order to examine this …
The Effect Of Past Institutional Structures On Current Economic Development Levels: The Former French African Colonies, Ana May Jerolamon
The Effect Of Past Institutional Structures On Current Economic Development Levels: The Former French African Colonies, Ana May Jerolamon
Senior Honors Projects
By the early 1960’s, most of the French colonies in Africa had gained independence. Since then, these former colonies have reached economic development levels that vary widely by country. This project will argue that while most of these countries were official colonies for less than one hundred years, the institutions that were created during the colonial period still have an effect on the current economic development of such countries. Since political institutions become intertwined with the culture and structure of a country,
they are extremely hard to modify; therefore, we can expect to find the presence of institutions that are …
Prevalence Of Sexual Harassment And Assault In Uri Stem Graduate Students, Ivy Burns, Holly Dunsworth
Prevalence Of Sexual Harassment And Assault In Uri Stem Graduate Students, Ivy Burns, Holly Dunsworth
Senior Honors Projects
There are many barriers for women in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, and math); one, often untalked about, barrier is the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault. In the summer of 2014 the paper “Survey of Academic Field Experiences (SAFE): Trainees Report Harassment and Assault” by Clancy, et. al. was released and shed light on an issue facing many young women and men in science. According to the SAFE survey, a shocking amount of sexual harassment and assault was experienced by the, primarily female, researchers and very few knew how to report an incidence of assault. With this project I …

Promoting Conservation: An Investigation And Treatment Of Seneca-Iroquois Moccasins, Nicole Passerotti
Art Conservation Master's Projects
In 2016 there are currently 566 federally recognized American Indian Tribes. Of these hundreds of tribes only a small portion operate tribal archives, libraries and/or museums. An even small percentage of these tribes are able to address conservation and preservation needs of their collections. The Seneca Iroquois National Museum (SINM) located in Salamanca, NY is currently building a new Cultural Center to help promote, protect, and safeguard their historical artifacts. By strengthening ties to the SUNY Buffalo State College Art Conservation Department in Buffalo, NY the caretakers at SINM will have access to current preservation information, state of the art …
The Effect Of Spoiler Types On Enjoyment, Sussana Oad
The Effect Of Spoiler Types On Enjoyment, Sussana Oad
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The belief that story spoilers are irksome is prevalent in society. However, prior research (Leavitt & Christenfeld, 2011, 2013) has found that spoilers increase enjoyment of short stories, while two follow-up studies (Johnson & Rosenbaum, 2015; Levine, Betzner, & Autry, in press) have failed to confirm these results and, in fact, found the opposite result – that spoilers decrease enjoyment. While these differential results are puzzling, they may be explained by the different spoilers types used in these studies. Therefore, in the present research, we examined whether the discrepant results were due to the spoiler types employed by using all …

Applying Linguistics: Analyzing The Differences Between Human And Machine Translation Of Selected Texts, Nicole Howell
Applying Linguistics: Analyzing The Differences Between Human And Machine Translation Of Selected Texts, Nicole Howell
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Machine translation systems experience a trade-off between efficiency and efficacy: while quicker and easier than human translation, machine translations are less accurate and comprehensible.
This study analyzes two sets of English to Spanish translations to compare the differences between human and machine translation and evaluate the performance of machine translation. Google Translate—the best-performing machine translator—represents machine translation as a whole in producing English to Spanish translations of the given text. The primary investigator—a non-native speaker and graduating student of Spanish Language, Literature & Culture at Syracuse University—serves as the benchmark for the average non-native speaker of Spanish at the advanced-mid …

Introducing Alexandra Moniqué: A Journey Through The Music Industry, Alexandra Mayo
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The music industry is a wide field with careers ranging from artist management, publicity, marketing, promotions, and music litigation to songwriting, producing, recording, and mastering. The list goes on and on; but there is a clear distinction between the artistic side of the industry and the business side of the industry.
This Capstone Project is my journey through the music industry both artistically and commercially. As a singer/songwriter, I wrote, recorded, and released an EP under my artist persona, Alexandra Moniqué. I then tackled the business side of the industry by promoting the album as a manager, publicist, and marketer. …

Soil For Your Soul: African American Women & Social Entrepreneurship, Markova Casseus
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This study seeks to take a look at the growing trend of African-American women in social entrepreneurship, more specifically their motivations for pursuing this career path. In the traditional business model, we find that women are underrepresented at every level of the corporate pipeline, especially in upper level positions. For African-American women, these numbers are even smaller. As such in the recent years, we have seen more and more women turning to entrepreneurship, with African-American women becoming the fastest growing segment of the women-owned businesses population. At the same time, we are also seeing a rise in social entrepreneurship, which …
Personal Memory And Digital Mobile Media: How A Product And A Web Platform Can Improve Digital Memory Archiving, Sarah Folger
Personal Memory And Digital Mobile Media: How A Product And A Web Platform Can Improve Digital Memory Archiving, Sarah Folger
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Our technology has been evolving so rapidly and our ability to capture our moments has been become so accessible, we are creating hundreds of thousands of digital files. When we were operating with analog methods of memory making and archiving it was much easier to organize our files because we had fewer or them and they were often all sentimental because of their value. Today, it is hard to distinguish between all of our digital files to determine which ones are most important and even to determine where they are. The creation of social media has created an interesting dynamic …

Ethnography And Analysis Of The Effects Of Racism And Creating A Black Family Tree, Courtney Garvin
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This research looks at the effects slavery and racism has had on the ability to make an accurate family tree. This research is spurred by both the desire to document my family and by the unfortunate events of the Mother Emanuel AME Church massacre on June 17th, 2015 in Charleston, South Carolina. Using archival research, interviews, and family documents to build an accurate family tree, this research looks at the ways in which systematic oppression has played a generational role in my family. By looking at my own family for this research, I look at the stigmas, behavioral, regional, and …
