A Case Of Environmental Justice In Los Angeles, California, Cleora Ohar
A Case Of Environmental Justice In Los Angeles, California, Cleora Ohar
ENV 434 Environmental Justice
Abstract: Environmental Racism has been around for a long time. Looking at its history of key movements like the Civil Rights Movement can help provide a framework for why it has become what it is today and could potentially look like in the future. The way in which people have presented it has changed as culture has changed. Not only does environmental racism involve issues of the environment, but it also includes issues of race. Hence, the name of this subcategory of environmental justice. In fact, studies have been conducted showing that those who live in underdeveloped or poor …

Authority As Related To The Milgram Studies, Elizabeth A. Ajadi
Authority As Related To The Milgram Studies, Elizabeth A. Ajadi
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
The topic I chose to research was authority as related to the Milgram studies. I chose this topic because of my curiosity about the legitimacy of the Milgram experiment after reading about it and watching several videos of the Milgram experiments. Stanley Milgram was a psychologist at Yale University who carried out the Milgram experiment to address conformity in a domain that self-evidently mattered and, with the Holocaust as his obvious point of reference; he chose the willingness of people to inflict serious physical harm on others. The experiment consisted of a “learner” and a “teacher,” the teacher read out …
Stimulacra: The Accident And The Identity Crisis, Grant C. Gallo
Stimulacra: The Accident And The Identity Crisis, Grant C. Gallo
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
An in-depth analysis and criticism of J.G. Ballards’s 1971 novel, Crash, is conducted. The qualities of the novel that place it within the genre of science fiction are presented and contested. Ballard’s own commentary on his novel is taken into account, as well as that of the French hyperrealist Jean Baudrillard. Both of their positions are then updated and reworked into theory of symbolic exchange for the digital age. Ultimately, the worth of J.G. Ballard’s Crash is weighed against the words of his critics and determined to defy the definitions of the science fiction genre itself.
The Unspeakable: Fearing Madness In Poe's "The Black Cat", Morgan E. Elswick
The Unspeakable: Fearing Madness In Poe's "The Black Cat", Morgan E. Elswick
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
Within Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Black Cat,” madness is presented as a horror worse than any other. On the surface, the story concerns itself entirely with the supernatural powers of the cat, its predecessor, and their effect on their master. Beneath this extraordinary cover, madness is presented as the true reason behind the narrator’s feelings and actions. This interpretation of Poe’s work shows how madness, or a lack of reason, was feared more by the narrator and, in reflection, the intended audience of “The Black Cat,” rather than by any other supernatural terror. To explore the true fear …
