Cross-Cultural Solutions Volunteer Handbook, Alexa Senio
Cross-Cultural Solutions Volunteer Handbook, Alexa Senio
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Alexa worked with Cross-Cultural Solutions to design and create a handbook that could prepare volunteers for their experience abroad. By using her personal experience abroad at El Pueblito, an orphanage in Cartago, Costa Rica, Alexa was able to compile resources and information that would be useful for a first-time volunteer to make the most out of their experience and to make sure they are prepared for working with the children. The final product is an interactive PDF handbook and an accompanying classroom activity bank on Pinterest that can be accessed digitally by CCS volunteers worldwide.

The Real F-Word: Feminism An Exploration Of Feminism And The Female Experience On College Campuses, Beatrice R. Owens
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Using third-wave feminism and playwriting as the foundation, this project intends to examine the history of feminism as it influences the current third-wave in the United States of American with a specific focus on the impact it has on college students. This project examines the development of feminism throughout history and asks whether that historical development has contributed significantly to the way in which millennial men and women understand and relate to feminism presently. Through the compilation of research and the creation of a performance piece, performed on April 1, 2016 in the Wayland Performance Studio, this project examines what …
Tracing The Past And Outlining The Future: The James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal As A Genre System, Lindsey R. Campbell
Tracing The Past And Outlining The Future: The James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal As A Genre System, Lindsey R. Campbell
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Through my analysis of JMURJ as a genre system and my examination of the Screening Criteria document as a central point of communication and meaning, I will explain the value of such genre analyses and how certain texts embody an organization’s purpose and organize its communicative activities. As genre theorists Carol Berkenkotter and Thomas Huckin suggest, “Understanding the genres of written communication in one’s field is [...] essential to professional success” (“Rethinking Genre”). I hope to show how an understanding of the way genres function in an organizational context provides valuable insight into the process of carrying out a purpose. …

Rising Tide In The Gulf: The First Gulf War And Its Impact Upon Chinese Strategy, Patrick Griffo
Rising Tide In The Gulf: The First Gulf War And Its Impact Upon Chinese Strategy, Patrick Griffo
Undergraduate Theses
Observing Chinese foreign policy means looking through a clouded lens. A foggy image can be made out, yet specific details are left undefined. The Chinese reaction to the 1990s First Gulf War is a case in point. The perspective is opaque, yet we can still gather an understanding of important changes in China’s policies. The author provides insights not only into China’s foreign and military policy but also on Chinese-Arab relations. In analyzing China’s reaction to the war, we can see it was indeed a transformative period for China’s strategy in the Arab world. China reacted to the Gulf War …
Identity To Be Determined: The Development Of The American Ideal In The Early Republic, Andrew S. Mills
Identity To Be Determined: The Development Of The American Ideal In The Early Republic, Andrew S. Mills
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Late victories in the War of 1812, like General Andrew Jackson’s triumph in the Battle of New Orleans rekindled the growing sense of nationalistic fervor that had appeared after the American Revolution. Americans saw themselves as a people with a unique destiny granted by God. Between the 1780s and the 1820s, different political party visions of American identity competed. The Jeffersonians were agrarian-focused. They envisioned a nation based on the morality of citizens. Federalists saw a more hierarchical, European-like society as the best hope for the American cause. These competing visions of identity led to continued attacks by the leading …
The Significance Of Quality Creative Writing In Children’S Literature: A Practical Application Of Children’S Literature In An Educational Context, Nicole M. Wittkopp
The Significance Of Quality Creative Writing In Children’S Literature: A Practical Application Of Children’S Literature In An Educational Context, Nicole M. Wittkopp
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
With it clear that children’s literature is a useful and necessary part of a modern elementary school student’s education, it follows that modern elementary educators need to have a deep understanding of children’s literature. Only by comprehensively studying quality children’s literature can an elementary school teacher effectively use such literature in teaching her students. The following contextual essay thus aims to first define quality children’s literature. Then, it attempts to uncover merits found in recognized children’s literature. Finally, it works to describe the specific tasks of a creative writer of children’s literature. Once these dimensions have been thoroughly studied, I …
Addiction: Physiology In Performance, Opioid Pharmacology In Character Development For The Theater, Lacey M. Smith
Addiction: Physiology In Performance, Opioid Pharmacology In Character Development For The Theater, Lacey M. Smith
Honors Thesis
Actors inquire into the physical, mental, and emotional impulses of their respective characters in the effort to develop a cohesive persona for the stage. The goal of this research is to determine whether a more thorough, scientific understanding of the physiopyschological phenomena a character experiences, specifically opioid withdrawal, will aid in the depiction of symptoms on stage. The project began with a research period and culminated in physical dissemination through theater performance. Both video, audio, and text media were utilized to establish a thorough comprehension of the physiological mechanisms in opioid addiction. Further profiling of the characteristics and symptomatic episodes …
‘Untruths And Propaganda’ – Churches Of Christ, Darwinism, And The 1985-1986 Acu Evolution Controversy, Paul A. Anthony
‘Untruths And Propaganda’ – Churches Of Christ, Darwinism, And The 1985-1986 Acu Evolution Controversy, Paul A. Anthony
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1985-1986, Abilene Christian University endured what one observer called the worst attack in “size, nature and intensity” on a university affiliated with Churches of Christ. The flashpoint was whether two biology professors were teaching evolution as fact without refutation. The university denied it, but the controversy raged for two years. Left unanswered was the most basic of questions: Did ACU professors actually teach evolution without a creationist rebuttal? Which leads to another: Why in 1985 – 130 years after the publication of On the Origin of Species and 60 years after ACU had fired a professor who questioned readings …
The Lightbringer: A Novel, Brett L. Butler
The Lightbringer: A Novel, Brett L. Butler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Lightbringer is about a collision of two worlds: the world of a contemporary South Florida town and the magical world of Zariel, bringing with it the universal threat of the Terra. Childhood friends, Breck and Tom, are thrown into the middle of an ancient conflict between the Terra—a collection of alien races that have been transformed by darkness—and the forces of good. After an encounter with a magical pool of golden water, the boys must learn to use their new abilities to protect against the growing Terranox army. In the midst of their struggle, however, a mysterious companion—the Lightbringer, …
The Texts We Play: Avatar Creation And Racial Invisibility In Role-Playing Video Games, Daniel L. Archer
The Texts We Play: Avatar Creation And Racial Invisibility In Role-Playing Video Games, Daniel L. Archer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project sets out to address problems of racial inequalities in role-playing video games as part of a growing field of video game studies in literary criticism. As these games are an increasingly popular form of entertainment in contemporary culture, their potential effects on players cannot be ignored. If these games continue to reflect society in a way that perpetuates racist stereotypes, social progress will halt. In order to study these games from a literary perspective, then, this project combines both narratological and ludological approaches to video game studies in order to bring about new insight from two strong perspectives. …
A Theory Of Associations: An Explanation And Applications To Wagner's Das Rheingold, Parker T. Gordon
A Theory Of Associations: An Explanation And Applications To Wagner's Das Rheingold, Parker T. Gordon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis posits an interdisciplinary theory of associations. Within inter- and intra-textual texts, there exists a presence that points toward an originating source, which audience members may or may not consciously recognize. This presence accumulates associations from surrounding materials through abstract and subtle references or through direct quotations. These associations, once examined in relation to one another in the context of the narrative, may help readers discover additional insights and uncover new information about a text. My theory draws upon literary scholarship primarily grounded in intertextual theory and adaptation theory. Inspired by the intertextual insertion of pre-existing music in film …
Producing An Online Undergraduate Literary Magazine: A Guide To Using Problem-Based Learning In The Writing And Publishing Classroom, Amy L. Persichetti
Producing An Online Undergraduate Literary Magazine: A Guide To Using Problem-Based Learning In The Writing And Publishing Classroom, Amy L. Persichetti
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
This article will illustrate how a problem-based learning (PBL) course (Savery, 2006) can be used in a writing program as a vehicle for both creative and preprofessional learning. English 420: Writing, Publishing, and Editing is offered every fall, and its counterpart, English 423: Writing, Publishing, and Editing is offered each spring. The courses, positioned at the end of a sequenced series of prerequisite writing courses, provide a creative, applied writing experience that offers students professional practice through producing the digital version of Cabrini College’s literary magazine, Woodcrest. In the 2012–2013 school year, the English Department ran its first cycle of …
Insight Into The Community: Bee Similes In The Iliad And The Aeneid, Sara Heist
Insight Into The Community: Bee Similes In The Iliad And The Aeneid, Sara Heist
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
This paper offers a comparative analysis of the bee similes in Homer’s Iliad and Virgil’s Aeneid to demonstrate that there are significant thematic connections between the similes in the two epics. In both works, bee similes illustrate the structure of the ideal society, as a close reading of each simile reveals. This paper demonstrates that both Homeric and Virgilian bee similes focus on the concept of community. In the Iliad, Homer’s first extended simile compares the Greek forces to a colony of bees. This prominent placement foreshadows the significance of bee similes in the Homeric epic. As a Greek poet, …
A Tale Of Two Schools: Medical Education And California's Political Economy, Michael Weismeyer
A Tale Of Two Schools: Medical Education And California's Political Economy, Michael Weismeyer
Andrews Research Conference
This paper examines the beginnings of medical education in California and argues that the establishment of a medical school in California contributed to the growth of the state’s political economy and allowed for further development of the state. After statehood in 1850, California developed necessary infrastructure, including providing healthcare to the California populace. While there were doctors in California in the 1850s, no institution existed for educating new doctors within the state. This changed in 1859 with the founding of California’s first medical school, which was formed as the medical department of the University of the Pacific, one of California’s …
The Influence Of The Ottoman Threat On The Protestant Reformation (Reformers), Daniel Nițulescu
The Influence Of The Ottoman Threat On The Protestant Reformation (Reformers), Daniel Nițulescu
Andrews Research Conference
This paper will highlight the causality between the Ottoman’s menace and the Protestant Reformation in the XVI-th century, regarding the support, the consolidation and the direct determination of the Protestant movement. The question - ,,whom did the Turks support more: the Protestants or the Catholics?" was for a long time a realm of debate for theologians and even for historians.
More than that, the paper proposes to reveal the influence of Ottoman peril on reformer perceptions (visions about Turks). In this regard, one of its goal is to explain the permanent oscillation in Luther’s vision concerning Turk’s incursion and invasion. …
A Door Into Ocean’S Nonviolent Resistance As Pragmatic Social Vision, Melodie A. Roschman
A Door Into Ocean’S Nonviolent Resistance As Pragmatic Social Vision, Melodie A. Roschman
Andrews Research Conference
In this essay, I examine how Joan Slonczewski’s 1986 feminist science fiction novel A Door into Ocean outlines a practical program of nonviolent resistance to oppression. Unlike many dystopian and utopian novels, which provide social commentary and offer up ideals but not practical solutions, A Door into Ocean depicts the citizens of a peaceful alien nation, Shora, using various practical tactics of resistance against invading Valan forces that can be applied to contemporary protest and political action. I begin my study by examining the threefold influences on the Shoran’s philosophy of resistance: postcolonial resistance, ecofeminism, and Quaker theology. I then …
If Somebody Knows About That Nose, It’S Not The Forgetful Maid: False Memory And The Environment Of Recall In Tristram Shandy, Kylene Cave
Andrews Research Conference
In his seven-volume novel, In Search of Lost Time (1913-1927), Marcel Proust explores the depths and limitations of involuntary memory and argues that remembrance of the past is inherently altered and unreliable. Referred to by many scholars as Proustian Memory, this theory explicates both the revision that takes place in the act of remembering as well as the inherent fictionality of these recollections. Written, however, nearly two-hundred years earlier, Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy (1759-64) hints at some of the same claims regarding the reconstruction of the past through the act of remembering. Deeply concerned with how and to what extent …

A Biblical Hermeneutic For Dominion: Domination Vs Stewardship, Nancy Opstad Weldon
A Biblical Hermeneutic For Dominion: Domination Vs Stewardship, Nancy Opstad Weldon
Obsculta
In his encyclical, Laudato Si’, Pope Francis argues that modern anthropocentrism has contributed to the valuing of technical thought over the dignity of the natural world with grave environmental consequences. Over a half-century earlier, Lynn White Jr. offered a similar criticism, stating that the dualism existing between humans and nature allows Christians to exploit nature for their own end. This paper turns to scripture to explore how an intertextual understanding of the original Hebrew may help reframe what it means for humans to have dominion over the natural world.
Millennials Of The Church, Joel S. Kumro
Millennials Of The Church, Joel S. Kumro
Obsculta
Over the last two decades, Catholic millennials have become increasingly attracted to traditional and orthodox views on liturgy and ecclesiology. Several factors play a role for this increasing trend. Though some Catholics view it with skepticism, the movement towards traditional expressions of faith remains a strong force in the Catholic Church. This paper attempts to explore this phenomena.
The Relational Ontology Of Augustine's And Lacugna's Trinity, Alex Juguilon O.S.C.
The Relational Ontology Of Augustine's And Lacugna's Trinity, Alex Juguilon O.S.C.
Obsculta
Unfolding the nature of the Trinity within a monotheistic framework posed a challenge for the Fathers of the Church. Augustine’s approach prioritizes divine unity and shared essence as the primary principle of the Godhead. Catherine LaCugna, on the other hand, asserts a Cappadocian view that begins with divine personhood as the primary ontological category. This essay places the relational ontology of Augustine’s doctrine of the Trinity in colloquy with LaCugna’s appropriation of Cappadocian Trinitarian theology.
