A Prison Of Education: The School-To-Prison Pipeline In Low-Income Schools, Adam Le
A Prison Of Education: The School-To-Prison Pipeline In Low-Income Schools, Adam Le
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
This paper examines the relationship between prisons and education in American culture, comparing public schools in California cities to wealthier private schools. The essay critiques the American dream’s notions of social stratification and success of the individual in racialized areas. The first section compares funding disparities between education and prison and argues that while funding is an integral part of the inner-city’s problem, the curriculum itself is ineffective. The second section takes a closer look at differences in the curricula and educational settings of an inner-city school and a private school. It offers ethnic studies in secondary education as a …

Hegemony is a system in which power is acquired, maintained and purposed to control events and discourses as a means of dictating what is normal. Hegemonic ideologies concerning masculinity control the way in which the male body is perceived and dictate the acceptable expression of ‘manhood’. Furthermore, these hegemonic ideologies dictate the perception of alternative expressions of the male body through discursive devices of fear and rejection, such as homophobia and racism. Conversations is a collection of three works of choreography created in response to the hegemonic structures that dictate the perception of masculinity. The first, The Trouble with Masculinity, …

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
This capstone navigates the changing procedures and expectations of scholarly publishing within English Studies, focusing on the new mediums of digitally born scholarship and open-access scholarship. It does this by presenting a heuristic through which scholars can weigh various options for publication within academia. The goal of this heuristic is to guide today’s scholars to publish their research in formats that align most thoroughly with their research without sacrificing quality (and even improving it), with their eventual tenure and promotion reviews in mind.
Included in this capstone is a thorough explanation of the background information required to understand the current …

The Turning Point Of Who Shall Be Master: Killer Of Sheep, Naming, Gender, And The Gaze Of African American Women, Sean Davis Watkins
The Turning Point Of Who Shall Be Master: Killer Of Sheep, Naming, Gender, And The Gaze Of African American Women, Sean Davis Watkins
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
Charles Burnett’s 1978 award-winning film Killer of Sheep directly responded to the then-popular Blaxploitation genre, holding a mirror up to post-Watts, 1970s America, while exposing and exploring gender and race issues. Moreover, intentionally or not, Burnett, with this film, effectively demonstrated the lack of recognition that Black women faced in domestic, activist, and employment spheres; simultaneously, Burnett conspicuously reified the relegation of women into that silent, domestic sphere while challenging stereotypes of Black men, elevating them and establishing them as humans, capable of hubris, humanity, and vulnerability. This neo-realistic film masterfully rebirthed the African American male identity; unfortunately, though, neglected …
Building A Case For Smaller English Class Sizes, Cara Lee Smith
Building A Case For Smaller English Class Sizes, Cara Lee Smith
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
According to the U.S. Department of Education, full-time college enrollment increased twenty-four percent between the years 2002 and 2012. With rapidly accelerating growth, higher education institutions must quickly find solutions to accommodate more students, which may result in larger class sizes. As institutions exercise the option of increasing course enrollment caps, faculty scholars are questioning the effects of class size on both student learning and faculty workload. At one state institution (Kennesaw State University), the English faculty formed a committee to investigate the relationship between English class sizes, student success, and faculty working conditions. This study examines the existing scholarship …

Selling Queer Rights: The Commodification Of Queer Rights Activism, Laurence Pedroni
Selling Queer Rights: The Commodification Of Queer Rights Activism, Laurence Pedroni
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
With the recent Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage throughout the country, many have spoken in support of the decision, calling it a massive expansion of civil rights. While affording marriage rights to same-sex couples, these rights and expansions should be understood in the greater context of historical queer rights struggle and the economic factors that have motivated these civil rights expansions. This article will examine how the expansion of gay marriage rights was motivated not by concerns with civil rights, but out of economic concerns. This process has, in effect, commodified queer rights, weakening queer rights politics to …

This is a podcast produced by BBC 4's Peter McManus for "The Digital Human," which aired on 9 May 2016. The show, hosted by Aleks Krotoski, explores the anxiety parents are feeling about their young children's technical prowess. My contribution to the discussion is in the idea of the Gothic Child and the long-standing fear that children will know too much and be too empowered by that knowledge.

Pilot Study To Assess Breathing During Sight-Read Stringed Instrument Performance, Collin T. Erickson, Clark Potter, Gregory Bashford
Pilot Study To Assess Breathing During Sight-Read Stringed Instrument Performance, Collin T. Erickson, Clark Potter, Gregory Bashford
UCARE: Research Products
For many musicians, one common occurrence during a performance is the presence of stage fright. Stage fright, though not always expressed can influence the confidence and self-esteem of a performer, and thus can affect the quality of the performance. Every day musicians are affected by stage fright, and there has been no exact solution as to how to lessen the feeling of anxiety musicians feel before performing. No data has been collected to find the correlation between the regularity of breathing and the level of stage fright that a person feels during their performance. A way to quantify regularity of …
