Apocalypse & Affect: Political Passivity In Film And Television Representations Of Nuclear Holocaust, W W. Rooks May 2016

Apocalypse & Affect: Political Passivity In Film And Television Representations Of Nuclear Holocaust, W W. Rooks

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

Within the expanding canon of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic film and television, this project studies the subgenre that makes use of nuclear holocaust as a narrative device or setting in order to understand how, rather than engaging audiences with the dire off-screen politics that inform such films, it imposes a sense of political passivity on its characters. Similarly imparted is an assumption of that same sense for the audience. In this way, the framing of modern apocalyptic narratives meet an “affective limitation,” which is a concept steeped in the examination of media as a potential tool to motivate political action (Massumi …

Ghost Stories: Doing Philosophy Through Literature, Paige Foreman May 2016

Ghost Stories: Doing Philosophy Through Literature, Paige Foreman

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Ghost Stories is a collection of three short stories that all make philosophical arguments. I define philosophy as an activity of thought that aspires to inquire into the nature of existence. I believe there are many ways to express philosophical thoughts, and I do philosophy in story form. The title story, Ghost Stories, is a Christian theodicy responding to The Book of Job that argues God should be held responsible for evil that happens in the world and that humans have the power to forgive God. The Palaces of Memory illustrates a new theory of personal identity as well as …

The White Church: A Young Adult Novel, Jenna Kaye Fox May 2016

The White Church: A Young Adult Novel, Jenna Kaye Fox

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

I'm not going to lie; I still have nightmares. One moment Robert was kissing me, and the next he looked at [his wife] Shirley in the eyes and pulled the trigger. I saw the white church, the willow tree, and Shirley's grave. I heard Robert whisper, ‘devour’ against my hearing aid. It was all my fault. I blamed myself over and over.... Kate writes this wrenching confession in her diary. Her experiences with her pedophilic confirmation teacher had been haunting her until she finally gathered courage to fill blank pages with her thoughts and emotions. The young adult, epistolary novel …

Unearthing Real Women: Reclaiming Sylvia Plath And Virginia Woolf From Their Suicide Narratives, Jessica Dunn May 2016

Unearthing Real Women: Reclaiming Sylvia Plath And Virginia Woolf From Their Suicide Narratives, Jessica Dunn

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath are two well-known women writers of the twentieth century who committed suicide. The narratives created by their deaths have in some instances become as important as the canonical work they produced. In an effort to understand their motivations and struggles, critics and the public alike have sometimes reduced these women to victims of the patriarchy, mental illness, or even themselves.

Beginning with my own discovery of this issue in the legacies of Plath and Woolf combined with my personal dealings with suicide in my family, I recount how I lost these two women as exemplary …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

After the American Civil War, and the collapse of the market in slave-produced cotton in the South, cotton merchants in New Orleans faced challenges in re-establishing the city as a central port for Southern cotton. As commodities exchanges emerged as centralized spaces for business in the 1870s, a new class of experts emerged, upon whose reports traders bought and sold newly developed securities derivatives. Henry G. Hester (1846- 1934), Secretary of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, was an integral player in the development of the methods that governed sophisticated commodities trading around the world. His career at the New Orleans …

In 1942, in New Orleans a group of intellectual and artistic African-Americans, led by Marcus B. Christian, formed an art club named Les Cenelles Society of Arts and Letters. Les Cenelles members both looked to New Orleans’s Afro-Creole population as the pinnacle of African American artistic achievements and used their example as a model for artists who sought to effect social change. Many of the members of Les Cenelles wrote for the Louisiana Federal Writers’ Program (FWP). A key strategy the members of Les Cenelles used to accomplish their goals was gaining the support of white civic leaders, in particular …

The Use Of Anti-Bullying Policies To Protect Lgbt Youth: Teacher And Administrator Perspectives On Policy Implementation, Michelle Lauren Holliday

Dissertations and Theses

The present study seeks to examine the role of anti-bullying policies as a means to protect against bullying based on perceived sexual orientation and gender identity. Qualitative interviews with high school teachers, administrators, and staff members within an urban school district in the United States were conducted to gain insight into how those charged with …

This period overlaps with a movement to subvert a negative regional identity among Louisiana Cajuns that is often referred to as the Cajun revival. Through a consideration of album covers as objects of business strategy and creative expression, as well as oral histories with …

More Than A Pretty Face: An Exploration Of Célimène In Molière’S The Misanthrope, Sarah E. James May 2016

More Than A Pretty Face: An Exploration Of Célimène In Molière’S The Misanthrope, Sarah E. James

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Molière’s The Misanthrope explores themes of hypocrisy, love, and the elusive nature of the truth. The play centers on the effects of unapologetic honesty in a society overflowing with pretense.

Célimène serves as the supreme example of this society, but is more complicated than the shallow follies she represents. She walks the tight rope between truth and survival and must keep the balance without leaning too heavily one way or the other – lest she fall.

This thesis endeavors to articulate the creation of a multi-dimensional character that connects with today’s audience and facilitates an understanding of the intentions and …
