A flickering glow welcomed me to my university’s chapel service. Votive candles? If only. No, these were glowing smartphones, as thick as fireflies on a summer’s evening. It was a scene of tremendous absurdity, like a man watching TV while making love to his wife: distracted people distracting themselves during a sacred act. It struck me as oddly understandable (I even joined them to check my email during the sermon), yet also as the foretaste of some looming spiritual crisis. Local journalism is expected to record significant events, people, and ideas tied to the location where the journalism is practiced. Public art commemorates some of these significant events, people, and ideas, some of which encapsulate the style of the city, and all of which can become issues that gain media attention. We investigate a decade (2001–2010) of newspaper reporting and policies related to public art in four cities that are considered cultural destinations in the United States—Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Chicago—to understand how this issue is used to define and describe each of these cities and styles within …

Minding The Pedagogical Gap: Creative Writing Studies, Common Core Standards, And The Secondary Creative Writing Moment, Chris Drew

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Although the Common Core Standards in English/Language Arts seem to exclude creative writing activities and lessons from secondary classrooms in favor of literary analysis and composition, current creative writing pedagogy demonstrates that such a reading of the standards is shortsighted and incorrect. By analyzing thematically-grouped standards and citing relevant creative writing pedagogues, this article argues that a majority of Common Core ELA Standards can be met by utilizing creative writing activities in the secondary classroom and that a critical moment has been reached for creative writing scholars to ensure their discipline is represented in secondary English curricula and training.

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

In response to calls for systematic exploration of the creative writing field, this study employed a quantitative design to address two research questions: Do second language (L2) writers who enjoy creative writing in English feel different levels of narrative-writing engagement between autobiographical and critical consciousness-raising creative writing? and Does autobiographical creative writing evoke a different emotional tone from critical consciousness-raising creative writing? Statistical and computational-linguistic analysis of short story and survey data of 30 multilingual creative writers at one U.S. public university answered each question. Jane Austen’s first major novel that was published, Sense and Sensibility, exemplifies the shifting perspectives in religion during the Georgian period by exploring the virtues of its title through the lenses of the Anglicanism of Georgian England. This paper argues that Sense and Sensibility reflects Jane Austen’s worldview and identifies how it stems from the Neoclassical and Romantic fusion present in her religious belief.

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Military headgear is a fascinating topic. It exists on a spectrum from the gaudy to the protective, but how did headgear evolve with the military? Interestingly, changes from the decorative to the practical can be examined through this blog’s favorite topic, the 1800s and the American Civil War. By tracing key changes in American military headgear in the 1800s, ideas about the nature of war, as well as how the United States was distancing itself from Europe, become clear.
