Revisiting Digital Sampling Rhetorics With An Ethic Of Care, Jared Sterling Colton Jun 2016

Revisiting Digital Sampling Rhetorics With An Ethic Of Care, Jared Sterling Colton

English Faculty Publications

Rhetoric and composition studies have conceptualized and defined digital sampling as a method of composition in many ways and for various pedagogical purposes: from a means of free-play invention that is critical of more formalistic writing practices to a semiotic strategy rooted in African American rhetorical traditions designed to effect political change. The latter view is critical of the former in that the former does not account for student digital sampling projects that unquestioningly appropriate from other people and communities. This is a real pedagogical problem, but students can create unethical and hurtful digital sampling projects, no matter the assignment …

Cool: How Air Conditioning Changed Everything [Table Of Contents], Salvatore Basile Jun 2016

Cool: How Air Conditioning Changed Everything [Table Of Contents], Salvatore Basile

History

It’s a contraption that makes the lists of “Greatest Inventions Ever”; at the same time, it’s accused of causing global disaster. It has changed everything from architecture to people’s food habits to their voting patterns, to even the way big business washes its windows. It has saved countless lives . . . while causing countless deaths. Most of us are glad it’s there. But we don’t know how, or when, it got there.

It’s air conditioning.

For thousands of years, humankind attempted to do something about the slow torture of hot weather. Everything was tried: water power, slave power, electric …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2016-06-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

José Tamayo In Spanish America, 1949-1951, Carey Kasten Jun 2016

José Tamayo In Spanish America, 1949-1951, Carey Kasten

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

“José Tamayo in Spanish America, 1949-1951” relies on previously overlooked archival material from Spain and Spanish America to reconstruct the performance schedule and study the financial management and critical reception of the Lope de Vega Company in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia. In doing so, it sheds new light on Tamayo’s administration of the artistic agenda and fiscal needs of his company’s international tour, helping us to understand how Tamayo built and cultivated his growing fame, at home and abroad, in the early part of his career. The performance calendar featured in the article’s appendix provides a previously unavailable comprehensive …

Guerrilla Flamenca Contra El Capitalismo: Performance, Espacio Y Política En Las “Acciones” De Flo6x8., Ana Maria Diaz-Marcos Jun 2016

Guerrilla Flamenca Contra El Capitalismo: Performance, Espacio Y Política En Las “Acciones” De Flo6x8., Ana Maria Diaz-Marcos

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Threatening Animals?, Heather I. Sullivan Jun 2016

Threatening Animals?, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Threatening predators and pernicious beasts continue to play significant roles in the human imaginary even as human threats to other species increase exponentially in the age of Anthropocene. While posthumanist animal studies and material ecocriticism sync human and other animals within the biosphere’s living interactions, our shared material reciprocity is currently skewing ever more towards the human threat to other species – and so to ourselves as co-dependents. This essay explores the meaning of “threatening” and “threatened”. Five German texts presenting human-animal interactions in the Anthropocene’s span by Goethe, Kafka, Stifter, Duve, and Trojanow unsettle expectations of threats. In Goethe’s …

[Sabbatical Report], Yvonne Petkus Jun 2016

[Sabbatical Report], Yvonne Petkus

Sabbatical Reports

Project Title: Processing the 'Scape': Studio Research

The objective for the sabbatical period was to conduct this research in the form of paintings, drawings, and installations with an emphasis on examining new sources for the environments within the work and to explore shifts in figure/ground relationships within the formal structuring of the work. An extension of my previous studio efforts, this includes the use of serial painting and installations (on plastic) as a way to wade through philosophical and formal questions, explored through the additive and subtractive act of painting and a resulting, recurring figure held in expressly ambiguous spaces.

Neutral Ground: Switzerland And Some British Poets Of The Great War, Robert S. Means Jun 2016

Neutral Ground: Switzerland And Some British Poets Of The Great War, Robert S. Means

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Over the years, Switzerland has been a safe-haven for artists seeking refuge from war. Situated at the center of Europe, possessing great wealth and natural beauty, and surrounded as she is by potential enemies , Switzerland has long been unique in maintaining her neutrality, especially through the two world wars of the Twentieth Century. Other neutral countries have not been so successful enforcing their neutrality. Recall the fate of Belgium and Luxembourg in both world wars: the invasion and violation of these neutrals was a central part of German strategy. But in the two world wars of the Twentieth Century, …

How Louisa May Alcott's 1870 Visit To Switzerland Helped Her Become A "Literary Lion", Megan Armknecht Jun 2016

How Louisa May Alcott's 1870 Visit To Switzerland Helped Her Become A "Literary Lion", Megan Armknecht

Swiss American Historical Society Review

On April 2, 1870, Louisa May Alcott-the author of Little Women-embarked on a European grand tour with her sister, May Alcott, and her friend Alice Bartlett. The women's travels took them to France , Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and England. This grand tour was meant to give Louisa, who was riding on the heels of Little Women's success, a reprieve to regain her health. Her father, Bronson Alcott, wrote to a friend three days before their departure: "I wish Louisa were in better health and spirits, but am consoled in the hope that she is under weigh [sic] to find them …

Review: 'Neurobiology: A Functional Approach', Paul Tibbetts Jun 2016

Review: 'Neurobiology: A Functional Approach', Paul Tibbetts

Philosophy Faculty Publications

The focus of this volume is on how nervous systems work and why they work as they do in the context of “the problems that brains help organisms solve” (p. xix). Accordingly, throughout this 16-chapter publication, the focus of the author is more on neural architecture and functioning at the circuitry and systems levels of analysis than on cellular and genetic factors. Actually, I found a nicely balanced and constantly interwoven discussion of all of these levels of analysis. The opening chapter is an overview of neuroanatomy and organization, neural circuitry, and functional architecture.

In order, the following chapters cover …

Ideology, Access, And Status: Spanish-English Bilinguals In The Foreign-Language Classroom, Michael E. Rolland Jun 2016

Ideology, Access, And Status: Spanish-English Bilinguals In The Foreign-Language Classroom, Michael E. Rolland

Graduate Student Publications and Research

Spanish language teaching in US higher education is today generally divided between ‘foreign language’ courses for novice learners and ‘heritage language’ courses for Hispanic/Latinx students with some knowledge of the language. However, ‘heritage’ students are a linguistically diverse group, and are also often enrolled at institutions where heritage courses are not offered. Little research to date has studied ‘heritage’ speakers enrolled in ‘foreign’ language courses. For this study I conducted semi-structured interviews to explore the affective and ideological characteristics of bilingual students enrolled in elementary Spanish courses. As the literature suggests, I find that these students have a generally low …

L’Écrivain Intellectuel Et Le Destin De L’Université Camerounaise, Jean Marie Wounfa Jun 2016

L’Écrivain Intellectuel Et Le Destin De L’Université Camerounaise, Jean Marie Wounfa

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This reflection is based on a corpus of narrative texts (novels and short stories) and on an eclectic approach which theoretical and methodological tools are borrowed from the comparatism, the institutional approach and the discourse analysis. The goal is to show that as a literary theme, the University strips off its pedestal and undergoes a more or less severe criticism under the pen of Cameroonian intellectual writers. Hence, its representation is marked with prejudgments, stereotypes and misconceptions that make the University a myth from which the writers free and engage themselves in a realistic representation of the university system. The …
