Vowel-Length Contrast Of (E) (Ɛ) (O) And(Ɔ)In The Thai Language Of Sukhothai Period(ความต่างที่มีนัยสำคัญด้านความสั้นยาวของหน่วยเสียงสระ (E) (Ɛ) (O) และ (Ɔ) ในภาษาไทยสมัยสุโขทัย), Sireemas Maspong
Journal of Letters
This article examines the vowel-length contrastbetween(e)and(ɛ)andbetween(o)and(ɔ)in the Thai language of the Sukhothai Period. Length distinctions are analyzed by assessing the connections between graphemes in Sukhothai inscriptionsand phonemes in Proto-Southwestern Tai and Angkorian Khmer. The study reveals that there are 5 graphemes representing (e),(ɛ),(o),and (ɔ), which are , , <-->, , and . The distribution of vocalic graphemes compared with vowel phonemes in PSWT demonstrates that vowel phonemes can be divided into two groups. Vowels in the first group include those with length contrast, such as /e/, /eː/and/o/, /oː/.On the other hand, vowels in the second group do not have length …-->

Place, Imaginary, Identity: Place Ethnography In Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, Tita Berger
American Studies ETDs
"Place for me is the locus of desire," writes Lucy Lippard in the opening to Lure of the Local (1997). This research project is about place. Two distinct sets of scholarship on place emerged in the 1970s and the 1990s. A third wave of place scholarship is evident today. Coming initially from geography and anthropology, the study of place is now ubiquitous across fields in history, cultural studies, architecture, planning, health sciences, art and other disciplines. Despite the sustained interest in the study of place, one of the hallmarks of place is the ranging and contested contours of what place …

Femmage And The Diy Movement: Feminism, Crafty Women, And The Politics Of Gender Performance, Rosemary L. Sallee
American Studies ETDs
Through a variety of lenses, contemporary crafting is examined as a complex and contradictory gender and class performance that serves as a form of communication among women that both enables and contains oppositional and gender role explorations. Crafting is created through myriad texts which transform into an individual form of expression, a societal spectacle, a fashion trend, a subculture, an addiction, a coping mechanism, an oppositional act, and a means of healing both physically and emotionally. This study investigates how the objects women make and collect reflect and define crafters' negotiations between personal desires and public personas, help them voice …
Unbalancing Acts: Plagiarism As Catalyst For Instructor Emotion In The Composition Classroom, Ann E. Biswas
Unbalancing Acts: Plagiarism As Catalyst For Instructor Emotion In The Composition Classroom, Ann E. Biswas
English Faculty Publications
In this essay, the author reflects on her experiences while researching composition instructors’ emotional responses to plagiarism. The research found that instructors faced a variety of complex and competing feelings when students plagiarized, and those responses threatened to upset relationships, power structures, and professional identities in the classroom. The author considers how and why her own emotional labor was altered in light of these findings and what this might suggest about the need for increased professional conversation in our discipline regarding the impact of emotions in the writing classroom.

Junot Díaz’S The Brief, Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao And Its Punishment Of Failed Gender Performances, Bruno Yupanqui Tovar
Junot Díaz’S The Brief, Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao And Its Punishment Of Failed Gender Performances, Bruno Yupanqui Tovar
Masters Theses
Junot Díaz’s renowned novel, The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (Oscar Wao), presents the brief and wondrous life of its main character, Oscar Wao, but also describes the exceptional lives of Lola and Belicia, his sister and mother, respectively. While the story’s title asserts an enthusiastic tone to the lives of Oscar—and the females in his family—the story actually reveals the victimization and demise of these characters. Though Díaz offers the spell of Fukú americanus, a Dominican superstition, Feminist Theorist Judith Butler provides a more advantageous, concrete explanation for the subjugation of these characters. Butler argues that culture dictates …

Music Education Faculty Publications
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of an intense piano training program on general self-efficacy, musical self-efficacy, and physiological stress in older adults. Self-efficacy refers to perceived beliefs regarding the performance of domain-specific tasks or activities, which contribute to psychological and physical health. A key challenge is to identify activities that promote self-efficacy in the aging population. Seventeen healthy community-dwelling older adults (60–85 years) with little to no previous musical training participated in a within subjects experimental design. Measures of self-efficacy and cortisol levels were administered over three time points: an initial pre-testing session, a second …
Yin Jiang
Yin Jiang
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Shuiyun Chen
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Yingde Guo
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Sau Ieng Sitou
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Wenxin Chen, Xian Fang
Wenxin Chen, Xian Fang
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Hong Cao
Hong Cao
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Jianguo Pan
Jianguo Pan
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Chreia Elaboration And The Un-Healing Of Peter's Daughter: Rhetorical Analysis As A Clue To Understanding The Development Of A Petrine Tradition, Meghan Henning
Chreia Elaboration And The Un-Healing Of Peter's Daughter: Rhetorical Analysis As A Clue To Understanding The Development Of A Petrine Tradition, Meghan Henning
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
In a Coptic fragment associated with the Acts of Peter, Peter “heals” and then “disables” his own daughter as a demonstration of God’s power at work in him. The following article will compare Peter’s speech with the ancient rhetorical form of the chreia. When placed alongside other traditions that describe the life of Peter, a consistent pattern of anti-healings emerges, in which a display of apostolic power harms another character in order to provide a lesson for those watching. Taken together, the rhetoric and themes of the pericope suggest that it was composed as a way of explaining a …

The common narrative about African Americans’ quest for social justice and civil rights during the twentieth century consists, largely, of men and women working through organizations to bring about change. The typical list of organizations includes, inter alia, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Urban League, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. What are almost never included in this list are African American collegiate-based fraternities. However, at the turn of the twentieth century, a small group of organizations emerged founded on personal excellence, the development and sustainment of fictive-kinship ties, …

Minority Report: Re-Reading Gilgamesh After Levinas, Francis Dominic Degnin
Minority Report: Re-Reading Gilgamesh After Levinas, Francis Dominic Degnin
Faculty Work
The Epic of Gilgamesh attempts to answer the question of how, given the finality of death, one might find meaning and happiness in life. Many commentators argue that the text provides two separate, although ultimately unsatisfactory, alternatives. What these commentators appear to miss, however, is the possibility that these two solutions may not be separate. Using Levinas’s distinction between “need” and “desire,” I argue that, by the end of the Epic, they may in fact be synthesized into a single solution, one that suggests the priority of an affective moral grounding as prior to and more fundamental than intellectual …

- Improving Rates of Vaccination after Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant: Patients who have undergone a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) for a hematological cancer usually lose the immunity they had acquired through vaccination. Although guidelines exist for vaccinating immunocompromised transplant recipients, many patients go unvaccinated or do not complete the series of vaccinations. An ongoing initiative at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is using a multipronged approach to improve rates of vaccination after HSCT.
