Exile And Identity: Chaim Potok's Contribution To Jewish-American Literature, Sarah Anne Hamner Jul 2016

Exile And Identity: Chaim Potok's Contribution To Jewish-American Literature, Sarah Anne Hamner

MA in English Theses

Questions of identity and exile are deep in the bones of the Jewish people. In this thesis I will discuss the manifestations of exile and identity in the works of Chaim Potok, a Jewish-American novelist. Potok’s work has long been excluded from the canon of Jewish-American criticism. I suspect this exclusion is due to critical oversight, as Potok’s characters lead more traditional Jewish lives in terms of religious beliefs, backgrounds, and behaviors. In order to prove the critical value of Potok’s work I will note the gaps in Jewish-American criticism where Potok’s work is missing. Then I will concentrate around …

A Woman's Voice And Identity: Narrative Métissage As A Solution To Voicelessness In American Literature, Kali Lauren Oldacre Jul 2016

A Woman's Voice And Identity: Narrative Métissage As A Solution To Voicelessness In American Literature, Kali Lauren Oldacre

MA in English Theses

The objective of this thesis was to analyze the progression of a woman’s voice in literature looking particularly at three American women writers spanning the 20th and into the 21st century—Kate Chopin, Zora Neale Hurston, and Edwidge Danticat. In conjunction, these three novels show a progression through the history of American women’s literature, demonstrating the successes and failures of voice and silence in their works and the ways in which creating an identity through voice is necessary, even if one must create it complexly. Ultimately, the authors establish a voice in their works that lays the foundation for writers who …

A Case Study Of The Integration Of Smartmusic Into Three Middle School Band Classrooms Found In Upstate South Carolina, Carla Fowler Tucker Jul 2016

A Case Study Of The Integration Of Smartmusic Into Three Middle School Band Classrooms Found In Upstate South Carolina, Carla Fowler Tucker

Education Dissertations and Projects

Technology is at the forefront of education as teachers expand their instructional strategies to incorporate technology in the hope of educating students to be 21st century learners. As more and more districts encourage educators to use technology in all classrooms, teachers search to find programs that will help their students in their particular subjects. The band classroom is not immune to this push in education; therefore, we find band directors searching for a tool to use in their band rooms.

This study looked at a web-based music program designed for performance-based groups. The purpose of the study was to examine …

Courage, Postimmunity Politics, And The Regulation Of The Queer Subject, Chantal Nadeau Jul 2016

Courage, Postimmunity Politics, And The Regulation Of The Queer Subject, Chantal Nadeau

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

In this paper, I argue that courage is invoked in contemporary political discourses in such a way as to regulate queer legal subjectivities. That is, the discourses of courage re-articulate the social, legal, and political relations that define and restrict the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens. Drawing on Roberto Esposito's theoretical elaboration of the concept of immunity, I remap the legal and political dynamics through which nations incorporate LGBT citizens into the polity. I discuss how the regulation of gay rights in a growing number of democracies in Europe, the Americas, and South Africa has contributed …

Darkness In The Contemporary Scientific Imagination And Its Implications, Joe Cambray Jul 2016

Darkness In The Contemporary Scientific Imagination And Its Implications, Joe Cambray

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

In recent years there has been a growing interest and reporting in the popular press and scientific literature on the topics of dark energy and dark matter. The mysterious, unknown nature of these entities has captured the cultural imagination. However, very little psychological reflection has been offered on the attention given to these phenomena. A brief overview of the human fascination with (and fear of) the dark is presented as a backdrop to the current interest being given to realms of darkness in modern cosmology. Beginning with the hypothesis of dark matter in the 1930s based on astronomical observations …

Meaningful Mutations: Reflections On The Synchronicity Of Evolution, Ritske Rensma Jul 2016

Meaningful Mutations: Reflections On The Synchronicity Of Evolution, Ritske Rensma

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Although Jung made a connection between his concept of the archetype and mankind’s evolutionary history throughout his career, he remained notoriously tight-lipped about his own specific views on evolutionary theory. In the final years of his life, however, he finally went more into detail about this important topic, putting forward a most thought-provoking idea: the notion that synchronicity, or meaningful coincidences, had a role to play in the way evolution took shape. As I will argue in this paper, Jung’s comments on this topic present clear evidence that he did not think primarily along Darwinian lines, as has recently …

Toward "What Bleeds Or Trembles": Reflections On Bergman's Wild Strawberries, Paul Eisenstein Jul 2016

Toward "What Bleeds Or Trembles": Reflections On Bergman's Wild Strawberries, Paul Eisenstein

English Faculty Scholarship

By way of its protagonist Isak Borg, Ingmar Bergman’s Wild Strawberries (1957) enacts and exemplifies a psychoanalytic understanding of change. Bergman’s film, in its form and content, presents and ultimately overturns a narcissistic world of “living death”—a form of living closed off to constitutive features of desire and to meaningful relationships with others. By the film’s end, rather than a “living death,” Bergman stages a life that has been achieved—a life that embraces anew the risks and joys of desire.

The Scandal Of Jewish Rage In William Styron's Sophie's Choice, Michael Lackey Jul 2016

The Scandal Of Jewish Rage In William Styron's Sophie's Choice, Michael Lackey

English Publications

Scholars have suggested that William Styron’s Nathan in Sophie’s Choice is insane or depraved—a character whose motivations lack rationality at best and are unambiguously evil at worst. Elie Wiesel, the author of the famous Holocaust memoir Night, has been very critical of Styron’s novel. Ironically, by using the Yiddish version of Wiesel’s memoir Night, it is possible to demonstrate that Nathan’s behavior is more “logical” than scholars have previously understood. This approach offers us a new way of reading and interpreting Styron’s novel by clarifying how Nathan’s character functions within a well-established tradition of sociopolitical outrage about racial oppression, …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2016-07-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Taylor's Soft Perennialism: A Primer Of Perennial Flaws In Transpersonal Scholarship, Glenn Hartelius, Glenn Hartelius Jul 2016

Taylor's Soft Perennialism: A Primer Of Perennial Flaws In Transpersonal Scholarship, Glenn Hartelius, Glenn Hartelius

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This response to Taylor's essay in this issue concludes that his notion of soft perennialism is unworkable and shows no promise as a theory to explain spiritual diversity. Numerous specific shortcomings of the paper are described, then it is used as basis for identifying three broad categories of error that occur in some transpersonal scholarship. Examples from Taylor's paper are supplemented with similar errors in papers by other transpersonal scholars.

Pop, Hip Hop, And Empire, Study Of A New Pedagogical Approach In A Developmental Reading And English Class, Karen Denise Taylor Jul 2016

Pop, Hip Hop, And Empire, Study Of A New Pedagogical Approach In A Developmental Reading And English Class, Karen Denise Taylor

MA in English Theses

This thesis focuses on the impact of studying students’ identities after using the television show, Empire as a Hip Hop studies based text in a developmental reading and English class. I frame the pedagogical approach to reading and writing by using the television show as a doorway into the varied language practices of the Hip Hop culture as opposed to Standard American English (SAE). This research uses James Paul Gee’s discourse analysis as a method for coding and analysis of the responses of the interviewees to survey questions. The questions were designed to determine from the students’ responses their attitudes …

Dreaming In Two Worlds And Two Languages: Bilingual Dreams And Acculturation Challenges, Winifred K. Lum, Jenny Wade Jul 2016

Dreaming In Two Worlds And Two Languages: Bilingual Dreams And Acculturation Challenges, Winifred K. Lum, Jenny Wade

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This study investigated the significance of first and second languages in the bilingual dreams of immigrant participants. A purposive sample of nine women and six men aged 20 to 71 whose first languages were Spanish, Thai, Italian, Tagalog, and French, and later acquired English, participated in semi-structured, open-ended interviews recalling a dream featuring both languages. Transcripts were thematically analyzed individually and across cases. The most important theme was the ambicultural self in the dream, referring to a culturally flexible dream figure able to speak the dreamer’s first and second languages to bridge between the protagonist’s two cultures to accomplish the …

The Nature, Function, And Value Of Emojis As Contemporary Tools Of Digital Interpersonal Communication, Nicole L. Bliss-Carroll Jul 2016

The Nature, Function, And Value Of Emojis As Contemporary Tools Of Digital Interpersonal Communication, Nicole L. Bliss-Carroll

MA in English Theses

The roles and characteristics of emojis are rapidly expanding within computer-mediated communication spaces, forcing many to acknowledge their seemingly inescapable social influence as tools of digital written communication. These colorful, contemporary icons—which became widely available through a range of global, technical platforms in 2011—convey interpersonal emotional expressions in a much more sophisticated manner than their charming appearance initially indicates. Communicators can learn a great deal about the processes of interpretation that are contributing to the continued and expanding use of emojis. An emoji’s perceived meaning can paradoxically be clear in one instance and ambiguous in another when utilized by individuals …

Categorization Of Hong Kong Modern Males With Regard To Predictors Of Menswear Design Preferences In Terms Of Physical And Socio-Psychological Dimensions, Travis Wang Hei Li, Joe S. Au, Raymond W. Au Jul 2016

Categorization Of Hong Kong Modern Males With Regard To Predictors Of Menswear Design Preferences In Terms Of Physical And Socio-Psychological Dimensions, Travis Wang Hei Li, Joe S. Au, Raymond W. Au

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Proportional grading, which offers the closest fit by producing various sizes, is commonly used in sizing systems for mass production today. However, wearers’ socio-psychological concerns are not taken into account during the development of the system, which may churn out ineffective fits. This study provides knowledge of menswear evaluation by taking into account men’s physical and socio-psychological dimensions. This study successfully categorizes modern males according to their preferences of menswear, concerning the predictors of menswear design preferences in physical (i.e. Body Mass Index [BMI]) and psychological dimensions (i.e. menswear functions and menswear involvement). Subjects were divided into three clusters: (1) …

From Philosophy To Phenomenology: The Argument For A “Soft” Perennialism, Steve Taylor Jul 2016

From Philosophy To Phenomenology: The Argument For A “Soft” Perennialism, Steve Taylor

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This paper argues for a soft perennialism, distinct from the hard perennialism which suggests that spiritual and religious traditions are expressions of the same underlying spiritual realities. There are two reasons why it is necessary to think in terms of a soft perennial model: firstly, because of a number of important common themes or trends across spiritual traditions; and secondly (and most importantly) because when the process of expansion of being or awakening occurs outside the context of spiritual traditions, broadly the same themes and tendencies appear, suggesting that there is a common landscape of experience which precedes interpretation and …

Gnawing At The Roots: Toward A Transpersonal Poetics Of Guilt And Death, Jason Butler Jul 2016

Gnawing At The Roots: Toward A Transpersonal Poetics Of Guilt And Death, Jason Butler

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

As an imaginal approach, archetypal psychology focuses its attention on the diverse and polysemous expressions of imagination as the ground from which all psychological expressions emerge, replacing the dried up concept of a singular ego with the notion that consciousness takes up a multitude of styles concordant with the mercurial flow of images that concentrically influence, grip down, and take over consciousness like a band of pirates commandeering a ship. Archetypal psychology situates itself as a transpersonal psychology by qualifying the image as inextricably archetypal, denoting a valence of meaning that extends beyond the merely personal, beyond the particular cultural-historical …

Oppression Interrupted: The Sabbath And Justice, Rolf A. Jacobson

Faculty Publications

The Sabbath commandment establishes the principle of God’s regular, gracious intrusion into the economic bondage of life: one day in every seven, work is to stop. From this primary law, the principle of God’s gracious intrusion radiates outward so that other aspects of oppressive work and economic bondage are also affected graciously.
