'Those Who Cling In Queer Corners To The Forgotten Tongues And Memories Of An Elder Day': J.R.R. Tolkien, Finns And Elves, Andrew Scott Higgins
Journal of Tolkien Research
Abstract
Those Who Cling in Queer Corners To The Forgotten Tongues and Memories of an Elder Day' J.R.R. Tolkien, Finns and Elves
Dr. Andrew Higgins
In this paper I will explore how several historic, literary and mythic associations of the Finnish people with elements of magic, the supernatural and the 'other' influenced J.R.R. Tolkien in imbuing the character and language of his own Elves with a similar quality of magic and 'arresting strangeness'.I will explore several characterisations of the Finns, the People of Kalevala, Tolkien would have encountered in his early study of the Kalevala, several Old Norse and …
Caterpillars, Consciousness And The Origins Of Mind, Arthur S. Reber
Caterpillars, Consciousness And The Origins Of Mind, Arthur S. Reber
Animal Sentience
A novel framework for the origins of consciousness and mind, the Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC), is presented. The model is based on a simple, perhaps radical axiom: subjectivity is an inherent feature of particular kinds of organic form. Experiential states, including those denoted as "mind" and "consciousness," are present in the most primitive species. The model has several conceptual and empirical virtues, among them: (a) it (re)solves the problem of how minds are created by brains ─ also known as the "Hard Problem" (Chalmers 1995) ─ by revealing that the apparent difficulty results from a category error, (b) it …
Why Animals Are Persons, Tony Cheng
Why Animals Are Persons, Tony Cheng
Animal Sentience
Rowlands’s case for attributing personhood to lower animals is ultimately convincing, but along the way he fails to highlight several distinctions that are crucial for his argument: Personhood vs. personal identity; the first person vs. its mental episodes; and pre-reflective awareness in general vs. one specific case of it.

Using World Café Methodology For Affective Change, Stephen Rynearson
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Rynearson, Stephen P. “Using World Café Methodology for Affective Change” D.MIN MAP., Concordia Seminary, 2016. pp.142.
The purpose of this MAP is to evaluate the usefulness of using the “World Café” methodology in changing attitudes. In particular, the participants went through a World Café to see if any change was made from the previous apathetic service to the Lord into a joyful service. Also tested was the usefulness of the World Café methodology for congregational decision making.
Among the topics discussed are: what constitutes joyful service in the Scriptures; what other means are often used in making decisions; and how …

"How Do You Survive Your Life With Christ?" Moroccan Christians Speak, Leah Farish Esq.
College of Arts and Cultural Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship
For the approximately 8,000 Christians living in Muslim-majority Morocco, restrictions on religious freedom are not as severe as in many other Muslim cultures, but are still an everyday source of instability, fear, and alienation. In recent interviews summarized below, Moroccan Christians spoke out about how this persecution severely limits not only their right to worship freely and openly, but also their ability to engage in economic activity and contribute to the social flourishing of their communities.

La Violencia Terrorista En La Narrativa Vasca Del Siglo Xxi, Montserrat Fuente-Camacho
La Violencia Terrorista En La Narrativa Vasca Del Siglo Xxi, Montserrat Fuente-Camacho
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Perceptions Of Hmong Parents In A Hmong American Charter School: A Qualitative Descriptive Case Study On Hmong Parent Involvement, Kirk T. Lee
Dissertations and Theses
Parental involvement plays an essential role in the United States (U.S.) educational system. However, parental involvement poses many challenges for Hmong parents in American schools. Many assumptions are made on the parts of teachers, staff, and Hmong parents about parents' roles pertaining to their involvement in their children's education. Hmong parents struggle to reconcile beliefs, attitudes, and values that they bring with them from Laos with the expectations found in the U.S. due to their unfamiliarity with the U.S. educational system.
This study employed the used a qualitative, descriptive case study approach to examine the perceptions of Hmong parents involvement …
South Korean Teachers' Beliefs About Diversity: The Impact On Practice Of Multicultural Education, Marie Yeo
South Korean Teachers' Beliefs About Diversity: The Impact On Practice Of Multicultural Education, Marie Yeo
Dissertations and Theses
Teachers in South Korean schools have begun to pay attention to the importance of multicultural education as Korea transforms into a multicultural society from a historically mono culture society. Because of Koreans' pride in the homogeneity of their race, language, and culture, multiculturalism is an idea that is hard for many to accept. Education needs to play a key role in fostering and retaining the value of diversity. Studies suggest that teachers' positive beliefs about diversity play a significant role to develop their multicultural competence and eventually to practice better multicultural education. The problem is little evidence exists in the …
Japanese Dialect Ideology From Meiji To The Present, Nao Okumura
Japanese Dialect Ideology From Meiji To The Present, Nao Okumura
Dissertations and Theses
The intent of this study is to examine the trajectory of ideology regarding standard Japanese and dialects from the historical perspective, and also to discuss the cause of the post-war shift of the ideology. Before the war, the government attempted to disseminate hyojun-go aiming at creating a unified Japan in the time when many countries were developing to be nation states after industrial revolution. After the Pacific war, the less strict-sounding term kyotsu-go was more often used, conveying an ideology of democratization. Yet despite the difference in the terms, speaking a common language continues to play a role of unifying …

Hidden Black And Brown Bridges: The Mutual Influences Of Dr. Martin Luther King And Hispanic Theologian Dr. Justo González, Gabriel A. Greaves
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
This study discusses the significance of “grounding” social activism in religious and cross cultural dialogue using the understudied relationship between Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Latino theologian Justo González. Dr. González was the translator for King during his visit to Puerto Rico in 1965 with FOR (Fellowship of Reconciliation). González is a Cuban American Methodist who has written more than 50 books and 300 articles in the field of Hispanic theology. Additionally, González founded the first academic journal dedicated to the impact of Latino theology, known as Apuntes. This resulted in him being considered among the prominent voices …

A Portrait Of Raymond Brutinel As A Young Man (Part I): The Future Machine Gun Commander In Edmonton, Alberta, 1905-1914, Cameron Pulsifer
Canadian Military History
Raymond Brutinel remains one of the Canadian Corps’ most intriguing and little understood senior officers. A fair amount has been written about his service with the Canadian Corps, which generally portrays him as a significant commander and military innovator. But his life before he joined the Canadian military largely remains a mystery, which Brutinel himself did little to clear up. He had emigrated from France to Edmonton, Alberta in 1905 and lived there until the outbreak of war. Yet little is known in detail about this formative period of his life. Based largely upon Edmonton-based sources, the following aims to …
Booze, Temperance, And Soldiers On The Home Front: The Unraveling Of The Image Of The Idealised Soldier In Canada, Fay Wilson
Canadian Military History
In 1916, Canadians were swept up in the rhetoric of a purifying Holy War. The citizen soldier became the embodiment of Christ in the ultimate fight against evil. As the mirror for the nation, he reflected the moral character and aspirations of purity. The behaviour of soldiers stationed in Calgary were publically scrutinised, especially as to their use of alcohol. The evils of alcohol galvanised various groups to move towards Prohibition as the ultimate war measure. This directly affected military recruitment efforts and served to alienate the soldier and the reality of his experiences from the home front.

Law And Justice: Scott V. Canada And The History Of The Social Covenant With Canadian Veterans, Jonathan Minnes
Canadian Military History
In October 2012, supported by veteran advocacy group Equitas, Canadian Forces veterans of the Afghanistan campaign filed a class action lawsuit against the Federal Government. The case, Scott v. Canada, is named after lead Plaintiff Daniel Scott. In Scott, the Plaintiffs allege that under the recently enacted Canadian Forces Members and Veterans Re-establishment and Compensation Act, commonly known as the New Veterans Charter (NVC), many veterans receive less support than under the previous Pension Act. Further, they allege that the New Veterans Charter is a contravention of the ‘social covenant’ between Canadian citizens, the Canadian government, and past and present …

On "Shi" In Chinese Calligraphy: Time, The Body, And Origin, Xinqiao Qiu
On "Shi" In Chinese Calligraphy: Time, The Body, And Origin, Xinqiao Qiu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The tradition of Chinese art has a tendency toward musicalization and hence toward time. Chinese calligraphy is the most typical art form that replaces music to shape our sense of time, as embodied by "shi", a concept of temporality in calligraphy. In Chinese calligraphy, "shi" is presented through the body, and thus temporality is embodied. The origin of the discourse of "shi" about Chinese characters can be traced back to Shuo Wen Jie Zi and Zhouyi in their discussions of creating Chinese characters, which have produced a great influence on the theory of calligraphy. As "shi" is a key concept …

Ruminating On Garbage: Exemplified By Kunal Vohra's Film The Plastic Cow, Chang Chia-Ju
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper examines the way in which non-human animals are constructed as unwanted object through human language, culture and economic system, and how such construction in return affects the lives of the animals. The paper aims to think through the entangled interconnected relationship among animals, humans and environment on both the conceptual and material levels. It argues that animals are deeply enmeshed in capitalist system while the animal-garbage connection can be traced in etymological, cultural, and economic and ecological systems. In order to reflect on our culture, globalization, and modernity, an Indian documentary film, The Plastic Cow, by Kunal Vohra, …
The "Drama-Embedded Mode" Of Popular Novels Of The Ming And The Qing Dynasties, Pengfei Li
The "Drama-Embedded Mode" Of Popular Novels Of The Ming And The Qing Dynasties, Pengfei Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The "drama-inserted mode" of the novel refers to the insertion of drama stories, diction, and other elements into the plot or the narration of the novel. In this way, these dramatic elements can be connected with the plot, the narration, or the theme of the novel, thus creating a unique aesthetic effect. The "drama-inserted mode", which can be seen as one of the "layer structures", is not only the narrative method of the novel, just like analogy, intermingled plots and repeated relation, but also the narrative structure of the novel. This skill has been frequently usedin the the world history …
The Origin And Evolvement Of Aesthetic Poetics From The Perspective Of Genealogy, Jianchang Xing, Hao Zhang
The Origin And Evolvement Of Aesthetic Poetics From The Perspective Of Genealogy, Jianchang Xing, Hao Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This article is a genealogical investigation of the origin and evolvement of aesthetic poetics in China since the 1980s. Its prelude originated from the "imagistic thinking Debate" in the 1950s and 1960s, which was revived at the end of the 1970s. The outcome of this debate was a common recognition that the image, rather than concepts, features literature and art. The evolvement from image epistemology to affectionism paved the way to an aestheticism-based theory. However, the emphasis on the functions of aestheticism to appeal, to educate, to save, and to liberate indicates that the aesthetic poetics was a utilitarian literary …
A Study Of The Name And Connotation Of "Literature" In Early Modern China: From Zhu Xizu To The Zhou Brothers, Xuehu Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The paper tries to analyze the modern name and connotation of "literature" and its emergence and evolution in early modern China. The establishment of literature in China bearing the Western name and connotation was marked by Zhu Xizu's paper On Literature, when professors of literature at institutions of higher learning at that time tried to define literature and its boundaries through academic papers whose influence reached out to the entire social community. Zhu's literary concepts mainly came from the Zhou brothers, who studied in Japan in the early 1900s. The Zhou brothers were among the first advocates for literature in …

Body, Life-World, And The Reconstruction Of Literary Theory, Xiaohua Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since the end of the 20th century, literary studies have gradually become conventionalized and entered into the so-called "post theory" period. What caused this situation? An easily acceptable answer is that there is a "stoppage" in the connection between literature and the life-world. In our view, the underlying cause is the oblivion of man's embodied being. In order to investigate the cause, this article reviews the primitive linkage of the life-world and the body in Husserl's phenomenology, analyzes the "ancient quarrel between poetry and philosophy", demonstrates the symptom of "poetics of amnesia" which separates the body and the life-world, and …

A New Exposition Of Su Ting's Comments On Li Bai With A Comment On Li Bai's Early Literary Explorations, Qinghai Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The meeting with Su Ting in Chengdu proved to be an important event in Li Bai's early literary life when Li Bai was encouraged and directed. Before the meeting, Li Bai's writing was more of a local literature than of a literary master starting a new literature. Su Ting was then lauded as "Master Pen" (Da Shoubi), and his appreciation of Li Bai's literary talent, to the extent that he compared Li Bai to Sima Xiangru, was influential on Li Bai's late writing. Especially, Su Ting's comments on the relationship between rhetoric (Ci-cai 辞采) and vigor of style (Feng-gu 风骨) …
