Henna Tattoo Project, Kim Bernard
Henna Tattoo Project, Kim Bernard
Artist in Residence: Kim Bernard
Description and images from Kim Bernard's first project as the University of New England Artist in Residence during fall semester 2016. Kim met with students at UNE's Biddeford Campus Ketchum Library to teach them about the history, chemistry, and application of henna tattoos. For two weeks, Kim's time at UNE was entirely concentrated on the henna tattoo project, as the UNE community lined up to learn about and work on their own tattoos.

Performing, Recruiting And Educational Tour Of Southern Sweden, Johan Eriksson
Performing, Recruiting And Educational Tour Of Southern Sweden, Johan Eriksson
University Grant Program Reports
My musical tour of Sweden (May, 2016) with jazz guitarist Steve Kovalcheck was a success both artistically and educationally. The tour was promoted by Radio Nostalgi who featured a 45-minute interview with myself and Royne Nilsson (the station’s jazz expert). Topics covered ranged from differences between the systems of higher education in Sweden and the United States, the School of Music at UM, the current direction of jazz music, my influences and background. Radio Nostalgi also featured my recorded music. The response was positive from listeners and the station plugged our first concert on the hour, every hour for a …

The Doctrine Of Inclusion: Reaching Students With Disabilities, Reginald S. Slocombe
The Doctrine Of Inclusion: Reaching Students With Disabilities, Reginald S. Slocombe
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
I remember the first time I walked into a class for students with special needs when I was a teacher at the Logan Seminary in Cache Valley, Utah. I was asked to assist Sister Wendy Parker with her second-hour class. She did not have all of her students with disabilities paired up with their traditional peer tutors, so I needed to help maintain order as she continued to organize the class. As I saw many students within that looked and sounded different than traditional students, I realized I had no idea what to do in this classroom! After a moment, …
How Civility Works, Keith Bybee
How Civility Works, Keith Bybee
Institute for the Study of the Judiciary, Politics, and the Media at Syracuse University
Is civility dead? Americans ask this question every election season, but their concern is hardly limited to political campaigns. Doubts about civility regularly arise in just about every aspect of American public life. Rudeness runs rampant. Our news media is saturated with aggressive bluster and vitriol. Our digital platforms teem with expressions of disrespect and trolls. Reflecting these conditions, surveys show that a significant majority of Americans believe we are living in an age of unusual anger and discord. Everywhere we look, there seems to be conflict and hostility, with shared respect and consideration nowhere to be found. In a …

Possessing History And American Innocence: James Baldwin, William F. Buckley, Jr., And The 1965 Cambridge Debate, Daniel Mcclure Ph.D.
History Faculty Publications
The 1965 debate at Cambridge University between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley, Jr., posed the question: “Has the American Dream been achieved at the Expense of the American Negro?” Within the contours of the debate, Baldwin and Buckley wrestled with the ghosts of settler colonialism and slavery in a nation founded on freedom and equality. Framing the debate within the longue durée, this essay examines the deep cultural currents related to the American racial paradox at the height of the Civil Rights movement. Underscoring the changing language of white resistance against black civil rights, the essay argues that …

Book Of Mormon Citations In General Conference, 1965–2014, Sharon Black, Brad Wilcox, Kyle Lyons
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Joseph Smith referred to the Book of Mormon as the keystone of our religion; however, the book was not frequently studied in worship services or in gospel instruction in the early Church. In the 1970s, focus on the scriptures increased as the curriculum for adult gospel study shifted from manuals discussing the scriptures to the actual scripture texts. The Book of Mormon became part of the correlated curriculum for Sunday School Gospel Doctrine lessons, and Seminaries and Institutes also increased their use of scriptural content. In response, Church leaders oversaw the preparation of a fully cross-referenced version of the standard …
Teacher And Student Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of First-Year Composition In Preparing L2 Students For Discipline-Specific Writing, Elena Shvidko
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
The study described in this article was conducted to gather teachers’ and students’ perspectives about the effectiveness of a first-year composition course in preparing students for discipline-specific writing in college. Data were collected in a large research U.S. university through a student survey (n=32) and teacher interviews (n=5). The results show that the majority of the students and all instructors found the course effective and its assignments helpful in preparing students for writing in their university classes. In addition, all participated instructors also tried to improve the course by employing a variety of approaches and strategies, such as implementing assignments …
Review Of By Study And Also By Faith: One Hundred Years Of Seminaries And Institutes Of Religion, Scott C. Esplin
Review Of By Study And Also By Faith: One Hundred Years Of Seminaries And Institutes Of Religion, Scott C. Esplin
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
“In the history of the Church,” President Boyd K. Packer taught, “there is no better illustration of the prophetic preparation of this people than the beginnings of the seminary and institute program. These programs were started when they were nice but were not critically needed. They were granted a season to flourish and to grow into a bulwark for the Church. They now become a godsend for the salvation of modern Israel.” Seeking to chronicle this history, the recent volume, By Study and Also by Faith: One Hundred Years of Seminaries and Institutes of Religion, captures the system’s rise from …

Culture Shock: Understanding World Cultures Through Arts Integration, Shelby Wooldridge
Culture Shock: Understanding World Cultures Through Arts Integration, Shelby Wooldridge
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Teachers often have difficulty engaging students in arts and humanities classes. To aid in this struggle, a series of lesson plans applicable for kindergarten through twelfth grade students in music and arts and humanities classes will be presented. These lesson plans will teach students about world cultures, such as West African, Appalachian, and Latin America, through arts integration. In order to reach this goal, there will be a component on student development in order to match the units with students’ developmental levels. From there, the lesson plans will be developed to incorporate all of the art forms, with an emphasis …

Navigating Musical Identities, Knowledge Production And "Authenticity" In The Diaspora, Anita Fábos
Faculty Works
In this chapter, through dialogue between co-authors Alsarah and Anita Fabos, we attempt to capture and explore the musical and personal identity of singer/songwriter/bandleader Alsarah—at a particular point in time. The partial transcript and analysis presented here demonstrates the opportunities but also real dilemmas inherent in navigating identity and producing knowledge as a person from, but not in, or in some ways, of Sudan.
Keats, Truth, And Empathy, Peter Shum
Keats, Truth, And Empathy, Peter Shum
Sophia and Philosophia
At one level, Keats’s sonnet entitled On Peace (1814) is full of philosophical certainties. The speaker believes, for example, that a nation’s people have a right to live in freedom under the rule of law, and that the rule of law should be applicable to everybody. Political and philosophical commitments of this kind do not seem to be called into question in this poem, or made the subject of an enquiry. On the contrary, it is as though we are confronted with somebody who, in certain central thematic respects at least, appears to know his own mind.
The Rhetoric Of Tyranny: Callicles The Rhetor And Nietzsche's Zarathustra, Greg Whitlock
The Rhetoric Of Tyranny: Callicles The Rhetor And Nietzsche's Zarathustra, Greg Whitlock
Sophia and Philosophia
Here I will work through the rhetoric of tyranny as practiced by Callicles and as reflected in Nietzsche’s Zarathustra, in particular. In Part 2 it will be shown that Nietzsche’s account of Plato as the complex figure with a Socratic exterior but a latent alternative ego of the tyrant, arrived at an image consistent with E.R. Dodds’ later thesis. Callicles the rhetor, featured as a student of Gorgias, embodies this alter-ego. In Part 3 we find Callicles and Zarathustra shared very similar beliefs once they overcame shame and gained honesty. Indeed, Callicles expounded a number of propositions foundational to …
The Problem Of Obviousness, Benjamin Goldberg
The Problem Of Obviousness, Benjamin Goldberg
Sophia and Philosophia
1. The Problem of Obviousness
There’s no such thing as obviousness.
This isn’t, of course, itself obvious; nor is it clear why it should be a problem. So let me start elsewhere, with the anti-vaccine movement. A friend of mine laid out the ‘obvious’ position: there are facts and rationality on one side, unenlightened ignorance and bigotry on the other. Scientists versus fools, and the fools don’t even know what game is being played.
