Similar Experiences, Unique Perspectives: How Japanese American Experiences Influenced Their Participation During World War Ii, Julia K. Deros
Similar Experiences, Unique Perspectives: How Japanese American Experiences Influenced Their Participation During World War Ii, Julia K. Deros
Student Publications
During World War II, Japanese Americans had to endure racist federal government policy in the form of relocation to internment camps around the country. Of the 120,000 people that were interned, a large number were citizens of the United States who protested that their 5th and 14th Amendment rights had been violated by their placement into the camps. The way Japanese Americans reacted to their experiences during the war differed depending on their experiences as Nisei or Kibei. These reactions materialized in different forms of participation in the war, usually involving the decision to serve in the military as a …

In Search Of Health, Freedom & Identity: An Analysis Of Isabella Bird's And Margaret Fountaine's Renovation Of Self Through Travel & Travel Writing, Mikki L. Stacey
Student Publications
“An Analysis of Isabella Bird’s and Margaret Fountaine’s Renovation of Self through Travel & Travel Writing” tracks three interdependent facets of identity that become apparent in the travel literature of Victorian ladies Isabella Lucy Bird and Margaret Fountaine. These facets are:
- the socialized self (the identity developed as a result of the society in which one grows up)
- the renovated self (the identity developed through interacting with and adapting to other cultures )
- and the edited self (the identity one creates when she writes about her experiences—for my thesis specifically, the identity the author creates to reconcile her socialized and …
Imprudence And Intergenerational Injustice: The Ongoing Vices Of Opting For Nuclear Fueled Electricity, Jame Schaefer
Imprudence And Intergenerational Injustice: The Ongoing Vices Of Opting For Nuclear Fueled Electricity, Jame Schaefer
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Despite the U.S. government’s failure to isolate from the biosphere the highly radioactive spent fuel that has been accumulating at nuclear power plants for sixty years, some governmental officials, scientists, nuclear industrialists, and environmentalists are urging increased reliance on nuclear-generated electricity as part of the strategy to mitigate global warming. An ethical analysis of their proposal is warranted, and one promising approach is the theologically grounded process of making prudent decisions like those that Thomas Aquinas outlined and explained in the thirteenth century. Following his detailed method of discovering the facts, identifying a justifiable course of action, and commanding its …

A Reconstruction Of Bernard Lonergan’S 1947-48 Course On Grace, Part 1, Robert M. Doran
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
The notes we have from Bernard Lonergan on the website www.bernardlonergan.com for his 1947-48 course on grace at the Jesuit Seminary in Toronto (now Regis College) are in two sets. They appear at 1600DTL040 and 16200DTL040. Translations by Michael Shields, with extensive editorial work by H. Daniel Monsour, are also available on the website, at 1600DTE040 and 16200DTE040. It is difficult, and in fact probably impossible without further external guidance, to put the two sets of notes in order and to relate them to each other. Fortunately, that guidance is available in the form of notes taken by Frederick Crowe …

Ham Sŏkhŏn And The Rise Of The Dynamistic Philosophy Of History In Korea, Halla Kim
Ham Sŏkhŏn And The Rise Of The Dynamistic Philosophy Of History In Korea, Halla Kim
Philosophy Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is show the systematic significance and function that the concept of history has in Ham Sokhon’s philosophy. Even though he was not the first philosopher of history in modern Korea, Ham enthusiastically presented and argued for the dynamic operation of the goal (telos) and force which he calls “Ssi-al”—the anonymous grassroots in the context of Korean history. In particular, the notion of suffering plays an important role in his teleological thinking, not by imposing a pessimistic outlook but rather as an integral part of the historical mission assigned to the Korean people. In the second …

"To cover the topic of worship adequately, I have broken it into three parts. Not all of the parts will be discussed in this article. The first part explores the why of worship. Next, I will develop the how of worship. Both parts depend on Psalm 100. And finally, I will consider the topic of praise , which will be based on Psalm 103."

Executive Function, Disability, And Agency, Kevin Timpe
Executive Function, Disability, And Agency, Kevin Timpe
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This paper considers how a number of particular disabilities can impact agency primarily by affecting what psychologists refer to as ‘executive function.’ Some disabilities, I argue, could decrease agency even without fully undermining it. I see this argument as contributing to the growing literature that sees agency as coming in degrees. The first section gives a broad outline of a fairly standard approach to agency. The second section relates that framework to the existing literature, which suggests that agency comes in degrees. The third section considers the psychological literature on executive function with a particular focus on how aspects of …

Reframing The Archive: Vietnamese Refugee Narratives In The Post-9/11 Period, Mai-Linh Hong
Reframing The Archive: Vietnamese Refugee Narratives In The Post-9/11 Period, Mai-Linh Hong
Faculty Journal Articles
This article considers how recent narratives about Vietnamese refugees engage with the Vietnam War’s visual archive, particularly iconic photographs from the war and ensuing “boat people” crisis, and contribute to present-day discourses on American militarism and immigration. The article focuses on two texts, a National Public Radio special series about a US naval ship (2010) and Thanhha Lai’s Inside Out & Back Again (2011), which recounts a Vietnamese child’s refugee passage. By refiguring famous photojournalistic images from the war, the radio series advances a familiar rescue-and-gratitude narrative in which the US military operates as a care apparatus, exemplifying a cultural …
